Scotch Pie, old fashioned and mostly poor, but help me find one

Scotch Pies.

They seem to be a very old fashioned pie ( unhealthy I know) but recently in the North, I bought one, that was full of delicious steak/ beef. ( sorry non meat eaters)

However, in my quest to find another, we’ve found an incredible number of mediocre verging on horrible ones.

And I cannot remember where I bought it.

Does anyone know, in the North, or available nationwide, anywhere, or a manufacturer who makes a good Scotch pie, full of beef

Many thanks for your help and apologies for omitting the word, please, in the title 😀

Have you tried garden centres with cafes and local produce / farm shops? I got a fabulous pork pie from one recently.

Or do you have a proper butcher? Mine makes his own pies and sausage rolls etc

User623 · 19/08/2024 13:11

Never heard of them so I googled... It's essentially a burger wrapped in pastry?

KeepScrapingBy · 19/08/2024 13:13

I remember these and they were delicious! You might find them at an independent butcher. Want one now, with gravy on the top! 😋

Are you sure you mean a scotch pie? These are normally mince filling (mutton or beef).

Having said that, Bells who are the bog standard scotch pie from a supermarket makers, also do a steak and gravy pie which is the same shape so could be mistaken for a scotch pie: Bells 2 Pack Scotch Steak Gravy Pies 400G - Tesco Groceries

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 19/08/2024 13:15

Do you mean a decent steak pie like the ones that would be eaten in Scotland on New years Day - if so M&S The Best Steak pie, £8 not as good as it was when it was first brought out and it was £5 then !

as I wouldn't expect decent meat in a traditional Scotch pie
from Google:
A few simple ingredients make up a Scotch pie. Ground or minced meat, traditionally mutton, but now more commonly ground beef, mixed with spices, and sometimes onions, all baked in a hot water pastry shell made of water, lard, salt, and flour.

thus a Scotch pie has a different pastry.

Aren't Scotch Pies mutton? I love a Scotch Pie, we always got ours from Aulds the Bakers in Scotland when visiting family. There are some online Scottish butchers that do online delivery.

Fractiontoomuchfennel · 19/08/2024 13:17

Apparently Bells scotch pies are widely available in Morrisons in England. They are fine.

AnnieMcFanny · 19/08/2024 13:18

Scott’s the butcher of Dundee will send you pies etc anywhere in the UK. I use the service all the time when I’m in the Uk and even manage to get them back to my home in the Middle East such is the quality of the packaging.

Greggs 2 Scotch Pies 282g

£3.00
£1.06 per 100 gram
Exclusive to Iceland

Ilovemyshed · 19/08/2024 13:19

Try Ramsay of Carluke. They do mail order.

Aaron95 · 19/08/2024 13:20

Scotch pies are usually made with minced lamb but come in the hard suet pastry case. But some butchers now use the same pie case but fill it with beef. The best known is probably the Kilmarnock pie. It's a scotch pie case but filled with beef and topped with puff pastry.

Fractiontoomuchfennel · 19/08/2024 13:21

Also if the pie you had recently was full of steak, it wasn’t a Scotch pie. Maybe a steak pie in Scotch pie casing? In Scotland bakers use the cases to also make different types - macaroni pie, chicken curry pie….etc.
Maybe a trip over the border in due to stock up!

longdistanceclaraclara · 19/08/2024 13:26

That doesn't sound like a scotch pie but a steak pie. Make your own the shop bought ones are always disappointing!

Boopear · 19/08/2024 13:30

Iceland.

Mrsjayy · 19/08/2024 13:33

Try Rendall's online Butcher they deliver and their scotch pies are lovely pricey but their meat is lovely so maybe you can get an order They shouldn't be beef it's mutton though so I'm not sure what you ate because scotch pies are not beef.

The website provided by @WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing shows a really good photo of a scotch pie...

Seems to be rather like soya mince with little seasoning, from what I’ve found lately, not the lovely steak filling I did have that one time

So in response to a few lovely replies, thank you.

I will try an independent butcher, there is a great farm shop in Knitsley near Consett.

Bells one, not so good, I’ve tried most of the supermarket ones not too, in my quest

I had no idea they were supposed to be lamb

The one I had was full of steak and delicious, I don’t think it was a Bells one, but now I will have to find one of their Steak ones, just to be fair and even minded towards them 🤣🤣🤣

I will be eating so many pies !!!

I had no idea Greggs made Scotch pies, they don’t near us, But we are lucky enough to buy their Stottie Bread ( fabulous) and sliced Loaves, which I know some areas don’t get.

I really can’t remember where I bought it as I have been to farm shops and supermarkets and butchers in the last few months in County of Durham and Northumberland areas

Oh my goodness 😀😀🤣 They look so good. 🤣🤣 My husband has already remarked upon my quest and the ensuing moaning, when it’s not nice.

This reminds me when I was on a quest to find a really good Indian curry, and had it delivered frozen from Scotland !
