Scotch Pie, old fashioned and mostly poor, but help me find one

Scotch Pies.

They seem to be a very old fashioned pie ( unhealthy I know) but recently in the North, I bought one, that was full of delicious steak/ beef. ( sorry non meat eaters)

However, in my quest to find another, we’ve found an incredible number of mediocre verging on horrible ones.

And I cannot remember where I bought it.

Does anyone know, in the North, or available nationwide, anywhere, or a manufacturer who makes a good Scotch pie, full of beef

Many thanks for your help and apologies for omitting the word, please, in the title 😀

Morrisons own from the pie counter are quite good. Any independent butchers nearby who make their own pies?

Weepixie · 06/03/2025 16:06

Scott’s the Butcher in Dundee do a mail order service and you can have as many pehs as you like delivered straight to your door.

they also do different puddings and of course they do haggis as well. Just have a look on their website.

I even bring them back to the middle east with me.

We buy online (Scots living in England):
https://macdonaldbutchers.co.uk/

Traditional Scotch, Mutton, Steak and Gravy and the Haggis Pies are all excellent. We also order Lorne Sausage (aka square sausage) and potato scones from them (plus other things too!!) Service is excellent and the products are delicious.

Traditional Scotch pie is mutton.

A good Scottish bakery or butcher will also have a steak.

My son's favourite is a bean and tatties pie which is mutton with a mashed potato and bean lid.

There are also veggie versions of either macaroni or cawlifower, cheese and chill.

My favourites are in order

  • halftime at the football
  • Stephen's (bakery chain in Fife)
  • independent bakers or butchers
  • Baynes (bakery chain on Tayside)
  • Greggs

Stephen's have just introduced one filled with Doner Meat but I haven't got the courage up to try one yet.

Scotch pies are best served on their own or with beans and chips.

They can be srved in a breakfast roll

My DD and sister both love the Stephens Doner pie so I tried one. It's truly disgusting, just layers of dry meat with some chilli sauce between the layers and the salt levels were off the scale. If you look at the inside of a cold one and see how much congealed fat there is you will never try one.

My favourite is also bean and potato but it has got to be from Baynes and not Stephens Baynes were originally from Lochgelly and have celebrated 70 years since the first shop opened this week, I would definitely consider them a Fife chain rather than Tayside).

Hi Jock, I’m must say I haven’t heard of Pie Bob but I’ll look for them next time I’m in Dundee.

I do like a Bridie though.

How do you make your pies and do you buy the pie cases and seasoning on line.

On the back of this thread I’ve just taken my last haggis out the freezer for my tea tonight.

I agree, Stephen’s the bakers (Fife) do a great Scotch Pie however, I only like the pastry, not the meat filling. I like the whole thing if it’s the pastry filled with macaroni or the one our local butcher does in January with haggis, neeps and tatties. They’ve also done one with chicken tikka which is delicious too.

He is Arbroath but I was just comparing the pies it’s worth the tiny trek up the coast he has a few places I just don’t know where they are .

Blueeyedmale · 07/03/2025 07:09

Farmfoods do them and they are much nicer than the bells ones you get from Morrisons and Tesco in my opinion

ActuallyScottish · 29/03/2025 02:52

No, mutton pie.

There is a Baynes in the main bus station at Glasgow now. It’s lovely! Always quiet compared to the Greggs next to it though. Don’t know why as it’s so much nicer.

Gingerkittykat · 13/04/2025 03:53

@Fractiontoomuchfennel

I've officially banned myself from Baynes.

I've got into the bad habit of getting myself an egg baguette and a cream fudge donut every Friday. That donut really is amazing, far better than anything you will get from the likes of Dunkin' Donuts or Tim Hortons but I need to cut down sugary treats.
