Scotch Pie, old fashioned and mostly poor, but help me find one

Scotch Pies.

They seem to be a very old fashioned pie ( unhealthy I know) but recently in the North, I bought one, that was full of delicious steak/ beef. ( sorry non meat eaters)

However, in my quest to find another, we’ve found an incredible number of mediocre verging on horrible ones.

And I cannot remember where I bought it.

Does anyone know, in the North, or available nationwide, anywhere, or a manufacturer who makes a good Scotch pie, full of beef

Many thanks for your help and apologies for omitting the word, please, in the title 😀

Also if the pie you had recently was full of steak, it wasn’t a Scotch pie. Maybe a steak pie in Scotch pie casing? In Scotland bakers use the cases to also make different types - macaroni pie, chicken curry pie….etc.
Maybe a trip over the border in due to stock up!

Oh we once had macaroni cheese pies in Glasgow, not for me, but the kids loved them

I wonder if it was a steak pie, masquerading as a Scotch pie…I will update when I have retraced my steps around various butchers, and supermarkets.

It’s not Dicksons or Bells, or Lidl or Aldi. Or Morrisons, or Asda.

I didn’t eat all of these pies, the willing dog had to help, so as not to be wasteful.

I might need to try Knitlsey again, and question the children closely to see if I bought one there 🤣🤣 Because, I’ve forgotten

Bells also do them. Google steak and gravy pie.

I think @Aaron95 has it - you're looking for something like a Killie (Kilmarnock) pie which looks like a scotch pie because of the shape of it but isn't. It's a steak and gravy pie in a straight sided pie crust with a flaky pastry top: Kilmarnock Pie | Brownings the Bakers - Ayrshire (browningsbakers.com)

But I think if you order anything, even from the best butcher, called a Scotch Pie then you're going to be disappointed because it'll be mince.

Greggs

Sainsburys

John Davidsons

I'm sure M&S did them not long ago.

Years ago our church used to host a Pea and Pie Supper
The pies were the minced mutton -a bit spiced- in the hard thin pastry with the raised rim, so you could pile the peas on top

No help at all I realise as this would’ve been nearly 50 years back. ( I am that old 😯)

User623 · 19/08/2024 13:11

Never heard of them so I googled... It's essentially a burger wrapped in pastry?

You couldn't be more wrong

DinnaeFashYersel · 19/08/2024 15:19

Traditional Scotch pie is mutton.

A good Scottish bakery or butcher will also have a steak.

My son's favourite is a bean and tatties pie which is mutton with a mashed potato and bean lid.

There are also veggie versions of either macaroni or cawlifower, cheese and chill.

My favourites are in order

  • halftime at the football
  • Stephen's (bakery chain in Fife)
  • independent bakers or butchers
  • Baynes (bakery chain on Tayside)
  • Greggs

Stephen's have just introduced one filled with Doner Meat but I haven't got the courage up to try one yet.

Scotch pies are best served on their own or with beans and chips.

They can be srved in a breakfast roll

That's an excellent use of the rim. I put baked beans in mine.

We order ours online from either rendalls or campbells when we're doing a meat order, and while we're talking pies Rendalls family size minced beef round is to die for, it was a pie I'd never ever ask for until I tried theirs, it's so delicious! By the way you can get Bells scotch pies in packs or two or four in tesco online too .

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/08/2024 15:29

Or you could go looking for the infamous “Still Game” Beefy Bake 😄

StrangeFoodChoice · 19/08/2024 15:34

Definitely not a Bells scotch pie sadly.

Definitely a pie that looked exactly like a scotch pie, but had a lot of really nice steak in it

Greggs in my area, definitely do not have scotch pies..( shame )

I think this is fabulous advice for future pie eating, and it’s much appreciated.

I too love scotch pies, and have been looking for them, but they must be mutton. Steak is just not right- unfortunately I can’t find the mutton ones . Which firms do mutton ones?

Shock Wow. Not sure I could eat that without dislocating my jaw. That might be a carb overload even for me!

Whereabouts in the north did you buy your scotch pie @StrangeFoodChoice?
The Amble Butcher in Amble in Northumberland makes delicious scotch pies.

It must have been a steak and gravy then, you can get them at rendalls too ,they're delish

soupfiend · 19/08/2024 19:50

OP I cant help you locate a good one but I know OH loves these and when we're on holiday and they're in a butchers or bakers he will get a couple

I do wish though, that on threads like this people wouldnt preface everything, remorsefully and sheepishly with 'I know they're not very healthy'

There is no such thing as a healthy or unhealthy food and we should be celebrating our traditional foods. We're are traditionally a cold country, with a history of industry and farming and therefore our food stuffs represent this. We should be proud of them

See Lardy cake for more examples of this!

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 19/08/2024 19:51

So a Scotch pie is made of mutton but a Scottish steak pie is a beef & gravy dish with a covering of puff pastry, so not a pie in the traditional sense as there is no bottom crust.

JackJarvisEsq · 19/08/2024 19:54

what you want is a scotch pie between 2 slices of mothers pride

Proper Scotch pies are mutton.

Iceland used to tell them and more northern branches of Morrisons do (they did in Northumberland last year)

There's also an online Scottish shop but can't remember what it's called. They sell lorn sausage and mothers pride too.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 19/08/2024 23:17

as someone has mentioned lorne sausage aka square sausage

what about fruit pudding, those who know will know exactly what I mean :)

it is one thing I do miss

usually a breakfast item, not black pudding and not white puffing and not hogs pudding ( which may be a Devon / Cornwall thing ? )

littlebilliie · 19/08/2024 23:26

Scotch pie with beans on top! I'm salivating.

We used to go to the Doomhamier in Dumfries on our way on holiday. Scotch pie, beans chips and and Irionbru we were in Scotland!!
