What do you do to keep up appearances?

My example is an odd one, but I bought a bottle of the Fairy Max Power washing up lid (the one with the amazing lid). Once empty, I filled up that same bottle with a cheaper alternative.

It’s much better in terms of practicality, but the bottle also looks nicer. 😁

Does anyone else do something like this? Or am I just crazy?

My mothers friend used to reuse a shopping bag from Brown Thomas (Irish equivalent to Harrod’s) so that the neighbours would think she’d been shopping in BTs Grin

Edited because autocorrect thought it knew better.

JabbaTheBeachHut · 18/08/2024 13:53

Nothing, and I've never understood people who do.

Do you really care what others think of your choices?

In fact, do you really think others care?

7wwkw · 18/08/2024 13:53

Nothing at all
People can think whatever they want about me!

Words · 18/08/2024 13:54

@PetrichorSoul - she clearly had notions! Grin

I've been doing this for years! think i bought it originally when it was cheap and have been reusing the bottle ever since, but not because i am trying to keep up with appearances, its because its a really great bottle.

can't be arsed with the whole keeping up appearances, whats the point, it must be exhausting. I am what i am.. take it or leave it

Simplepink · 18/08/2024 13:58

Same! “Posh” shopping bags and refilling hand wash 🤣

PetrichorSoul · 18/08/2024 14:00

@Words she certainly wanted the neighbours to think so Grin

Gowlett · 18/08/2024 14:00

I refill the Molten Brown bottles with LIDL / ALDI stuff.

Touty · 18/08/2024 14:01

Nothing, I don’t care what people think.

Ineedanewsofa · 18/08/2024 14:04

We buy whatever coffee is on offer to refill an illy coffee tin - not particularly to keep up but because it’s a great tin and means we can buy packets that recycle more easily.

At school in the 80s one would have to carry ones PE kit in a Top Shop carrier bag.

Watermelonistheanswertoallthings · 18/08/2024 14:12

Years ago I had a friend who was a bit up herself, she's still a good friend but realises it now lol

Her daddy paid all her expenses, bought her a flat etc, while we were dirt poor working at entry level professional jobs so being paid like £1 an hour as they used to be able to in those days.

This was before gin was IN. But she would only drink Gordon's and "could" taste the difference. I used to decant Aldis cheapest gin into a Gordon's bottle and did it for years. Served with schweppes tonic she never knew any different.

mondaytosunday · 18/08/2024 14:13

Looking at my weedy front garden compared to my neighbours' pristine one (despite them being away most of the summer) I guess I just don't care enough! I am gong to tackle it now...

Nothing. Never crossed my mind

gardenmusic · 18/08/2024 14:25

I have my eyebrows regularly waxed. If I do not, my monobrow appearance is terrifying. I look as if I am coming for you.
I am selling my house, and have a stunt Tea Towel. I whip it out for viewings. It is yellow, and neatly folded. It looks better than the slightly tea stained, faded soggy messes that usually sit around the kitchen.

deeahgwitch · 18/08/2024 14:30

A friend of mine got a gift of Jo Malone handwash.
I know she refills the bottle with the Aldi dupe.
Met her in Aldi at the checkout and she had a couple of the dupe bottles on the conveyor belt 😀

That's brilliant!!😂😂

Hmmm the only one I can think of is one my mum does .

years ago for Christmas I bought her a Versace blush that was in a little compact mirror . She’s found a refill from Avon that fits the little slot where the blush went perfectly.
she loves to whip out her posh little compact 🤣 it has the very obvious logo on the front as well .

it is a very nice little compact and too good to throw away I suppose - we will call it eco friendly by reusing it 😁

ThePoshUns · 18/08/2024 14:51

Nothing.
Absolutely nothing wrong with Aldi / Lidl soap and washing up liquid.
I couldn't care less what people think and if they judge me by my soap then I'd rather not be their friend.

It was HMV for us

Bobbotgegrinch · 18/08/2024 14:54

Absolutely nothing, I stopped caring what anyone else thought of me at about 24, and haven't looked back.

DinnaeFashYersel · 18/08/2024 14:57

Nothing.

It's never occurred to me that people do this.

It's never occurred to me that people care about the brands I buy.

dudsville · 18/08/2024 15:01

I was going to say "nothing", then remembered that my decorating the spare bedroom was motivated by one of dh's friends coming to stay, I wanted her to like it. I'm glad though, I didn't realise how much I would enjoy that room looking nice. She and I have very different tastes, and of course I've done it according to mine, and it's now something I'm a bit proud of.

Bohomovies · 18/08/2024 15:02

Haha. This reminds me of a magazine article I read, back in the 80s or 90s. It was probably Bliss/Sugar/Shout. It was about how to look rich. One of the tips was to apply fake tan around some ski goggles on the first day back after the Easter break, and say you'd been skiing. The other was to borrow your Dad's laptop and tap away on it on the bus on the way to school, pretending to do your homework.
Can't remember any of the other tips, but I'm sure refilling expensive bottles with cheap products would have been on the list somewhere!
