Twiggy… omg

I knew she was skinny but I never knew how bad it was! Looking at those photos of her in the 60s is painful. Why do we do this to ourselves? Have we done this since time began?

I was just reading how in the Victorian times there was another skinny phase where women liked to look skinny and weak like they’d had TB. Awful!

Does anyone know if it’s ever been fashionable to be healthy?

@CrispsAndWines

Today's 8 was probably a 12 or 14 in those days. There is no way mm was a current 6-8

Her figure has been a topic of conversation for ever.

During her heyday she was tiny. She had a 22-23inch waist. What was unusual was that her bust was disproportionately large for her waist but even her bust wasn't huge.

Her waist would have her at a modern UK size 4-6 her hips around a 6 and her bust around an 8-10
Measurements are taken from her dressmaker.

Marilyn was a very long way from being a 6 - 8
Are you using American sizing?

She was easily a 14 UK size of the time
ie: Primark/M&S size 6-8 of current times 🙄

She was tiny
I have no idea why people today think she was bigger.

Of course when she got older and was taking a lot of drugs she got bloated but in her heyday she was very small

All this thread does is show how judgemental women are over each others bodies.

Shameful

AnnieMcFanny · 17/08/2024 22:41

It’s the way she was built.

Bbq1 · 17/08/2024 23:45

It's almost as if some posters hate the idea of MM being tiny, like a jealousy or a competition as they clamour to prove that Marilyn was a "large size 14" or big by today's standards. She was curvy but unusually very petite with that. She was pretty tiny by any standards.

MM appears pretty small to me but we are talking about a young one that was young almost 75 years ago aren’t we? That is a long time ago, I bet many people don’t even know who she is and body shapes have changed considerably. My Granny was a flapper and it’s amazing to see her in her attire but that is SUCH a long time ago. Who cares, so shallow to focus on the e exterior all the time, peoples’ value is not based on how skinny they are!

@leafybrew I don't have a tapeworm. I'm just very slim naturally and eat a lot. I eat more than my partner who is xxl. When we go out for breakfast/brunch/lunch/dinner - I will always eat as much as him. My friend owns a cafe and I will eat a full English plus chips when I go there once a week. I'll have double double at the pie and mash shop (two pies, two servings of mash plus liquor). I'm just naturally slim as is my son. My daughter isn't the same. My mum is, my sister isn't.
When I was travelling in India, I got ill and lost a stone in a week. I was then 6 stone and very unwell. It took a month to get back to my normal weight - 7 stone.

stevienicksismyfairygodmother · 18/08/2024 05:01

@leafybrew why are you being bitchy? I'm slim, always have been, always will be. But I'm not a bitch.

stevienicksismyfairygodmother · 18/08/2024 05:17

I would never body shame another woman or man. I'm tiny, I eat a lot, a real lot but I'm tiny. Same stats as Kylie Minogue. It's just the way I am. My mum said to me, 'you can't keep eating as much as you do when you get to 40, as you will become overweight' - I'm 52 now, menopausal and still 7 stone. Twiggy is the same.@leafybrew - why the bitchiness? I am what I am. My friends struggle with their weight, I don't. I have to eat a LOT to not lose weight. I have one friend who is the same as me. We have been friends since we were 18. She's still the same size.

Perhaps not. But I doubt too many women in their 40s or 50s maintain Naomi Campbell or Liz Hurley levels of slimness without significant sacrifice.

I am mid 40s, waist 24" and eat around 2000 calories a day. I eat a lot of healthy fats, nuts evoo with everything. The only thing I don't eat is upf.

beguilingeyes · 18/08/2024 07:53

Where did this come from all of a sudden? Twiggy was 60 years ago! She's 74 now.

Imustgoforarun · 18/08/2024 08:23

TheMarzipanDildo · 16/08/2024 23:31

The 22 inches waist is because of corsets and being sewn into her clothes.

I disagree. My mum had a tiny waist. They all did. I’m slim but my body shape is completely different to my mums. I’m rectangle. Nothing I can do to get a 2: inch waist yet I’m slim.

They did not eat as much fat and sugar as we do. Growing up in the 70s we never went out for a meal or a takeaway, Mac Donald’s or a wimpy was a treat. Portions were smaller. We didn’t have a car so walked everywhere. I was never driven to school like kids are now yet we lived a fair distance from school. Shops were at least a mile away. We were really just healthier.

kerstina · 18/08/2024 08:31

I haven’t seen the pictures and I haven’t read the thread but don’t judge that she has done that to herself. I have been thin all my life but post menopause I have lost fat and muscle and hate how anorexic my body looks even though I am eating. I am trying to gain some weight with the help of a dietician but I wish I was like most women who put weight on and look healthy at middle age.

It’s not healthier to have a 22 inch waist than, say, a 27 inch waist though. And MM and most women in that period did use shapewear, which does change your shape over time. And they had smaller bone structures on average, which is not necessarily a good thing (suggests more malnutrition in childhood).

What I don’t understand is why people are trying to use very tiny people from the past to support the argument that we’ve “lost sight of what a healthy weight is”. I’m not disputing that point, but Twiggy (not so much MM) is a terrible example to draw on because, according to her BMI, she was very very underweight- as in below the first centile. Those who think that that is perfectly fine and normal are the ones who’ve lost sight of what a healthy weight is!

stevienicksismyfairygodmother · 18/08/2024 09:14

@TheMarzipanDildo I am considered underweight according to BMI. I eat a lot, a real lot. If I don't eat a lot, I lose weight. A normal day for me: breakfast porridge and berries or granola with Greek honey and berries. Lunch - club sandwich, tuna baguette with crisps and a chocolate bar. If not working, salt beef bagel with halloumi. Dinner - anything from a chicken stir fry, seafood linguine, steak and chips. I will also eat at least one packet of crisps a day. Lots of Brazil nuts every day. Lots of grapes. Ice cream daily atm as it's hot! I'm the same weight as I was at 18. I'm not food obsessed (I don't even think about it, weight wise) I am naturally slim!!
We are all different. I lose weight if I don't eat 2000 Cals a day. I lost a stone in a week when I was ill. I don't try to be slim - I just am

stevienicksismyfairygodmother · 18/08/2024 09:16

@TheMarzipanDildo my stats are bust 34, waist 23, hips 35.

stevienicksismyfairygodmother · 18/08/2024 09:22

@TheMarzipanDildo tell me what a healthy weight is, please. I eat more than any of my family or friends! I eat as much as my partner who wears xxl! ! I'm tiny, size 6. My daughter is a 12. My sister is a 12. We have just been built differently. My mum is an 8 but was a 6.
I gave birth to two babies with healthy weights - over 7lb. I weighed about 8 stone when I had them and was back to my normal size within a month. Tell me why I'm not a healthy weight.

Upsets me so much that people body shame us slim people and say we don't eat etc. I probably eat more than you. I eat more than my partner. I'm just very slim, as was and is, Twiggy. Would you be body shaming someone who is overweight?

I’m literally going by BMI, I’m not making some moral judgement about your eating habits. Twiggy was only 6.5 stone at 5’6 which was objectively very underweight.

I’m not bloody body shaming you, it’s not personal and I am not your doctor!

Being very overweight typically isn’t healthy either. Does that count as body shaming? Because I reserve the right to state scientific fact, even if it does upset people.

Isn't BMI for adults? She was a teenager, I'm an inch shorter than her but I've been under 6stone, I've never dieted, as a child/teenager I would eat more than my sister who was overweight. Things like BMI are a guide and some of us are (or were) just naturally skinny. I've read that lots of top sports people are overweight by BMI standards because of their muscles.

I can't see one person on that who looks obese, I'm sure it would be different now. I live in a seaside town so I get to see the great british public in all their glory and I have to say the body confidence of the obese is amazing as it sometimes feels like the fatter you are the skimpier your clothes are.

Also, everybody looks smartly dressed.

Perhaps I’m just showing my age.
