Twiggy… omg

I knew she was skinny but I never knew how bad it was! Looking at those photos of her in the 60s is painful. Why do we do this to ourselves? Have we done this since time began?

I was just reading how in the Victorian times there was another skinny phase where women liked to look skinny and weak like they’d had TB. Awful!

Does anyone know if it’s ever been fashionable to be healthy?

Twiggy wasn't androgynous. She was fully female.

I just mean she wasn’t curvaceous. It’s not an insult, it’s a fashion thing!

Lynus · 16/08/2024 23:37

You can be slim and healthy. I’m 5’7” and I’m a size 8/10 I’ve never struggled with my weight, I’ve always been a healthy eater and at one point I was a size 6. What do you mean Why do we do this to ourselves? Some of us are naturally slim and do nothing to ourselves.

Edited to say I do think people have no idea what normal portions are and over eat.

HRTQueen · 16/08/2024 23:38

I have seen Marilyn Monroes clothes up very close (one top held up to me this was a different time)

there were a modern size 8 now where near a 14 the flapper dress from Some Like it Hot was a little bigger but she was pregnant much of the filming. The pink dress from Niagara is tiny.

it was a small exhibition and everyone was saying I didn’t realise she was so tiny

and her shoes the heels were not lower on one side

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/08/2024 23:38

Just to say, she’s gorgeous now, too.

Yes didn't someone try to wear MM's dress and find it was teeny? It's interesting to compare sizes.

Kin Kardashian wore Marilyn’s famous “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress to the Met Gala (I think it was) and the talk was that she ruined it.
Most people were furious people that Kardashian made a substantial contribution to the people who kept the dress — because they felt as though the dress was historic and a museum piece and that it was cheapened by Kardashian.
I haven’t seen or heard about the dress since.

Goldenbear · 16/08/2024 23:40

My Mum was the same as Twiggy in size but not as tall; however this was more so when she returned from living in Africa, the Doctor even in the early 70s said that she needed to put on some weight. That said only 1 % of the population have the skinny gene so mostly I wouldn’t think it was natural. The thinness gene though is when you can literally eat anything and not put any weight on basically environmental factors don’t come into play.

The word androngynous means can pass for both sexes, could be either. But Twiggy was definitely 100% female.

namechange1986 · 16/08/2024 23:44

Marilyn Monroe was tiny and absolutely no where near a 12-14.

I think we are too used to seeing photos that have been photoshopped now.

Love Marilyn.

I think most people were generally much smaller in the 40s/50s/60s.

We saw one of Fred Astaire’s suits at an exhibition somewhere years ago and it looked like a child’s costume. Our son was maybe 12 at the time and slight and we doubted that it would fit him.
Ginger Rogers was slightly shorter than him. She was so graceful and I’d always assumed she was quite tall. She must have been absolutely tiny.

JaneJeffer · 16/08/2024 23:46

Yes I've seen one of Marilyn's dresses and it was tiny

Marilyn Monroe was, in reality a size 6 - 8 therefore not "very curvy"

An American size 6-8. Their sizing is different from UK sizing.

Have you not seen Kate Moss op?

IdaPrentice · 16/08/2024 23:56

The clue is in her name, surely.

I don’t think it’s that strict of a term. Most people who get called androgynous are still very obviously one sex or the other. In this case, it just means that she didn’t look like a curvy ‘50s model and she had cropped hair.

TheMarzipanDildo · 16/08/2024 23:59

IdaPrentice · 16/08/2024 23:56

You would think! I don’t really understand why people are trying to argue that she just looked like every other woman in the 1960s. A large part of her fame comes from the fact that she was unusually thin.

TheFormidableMrsC · 16/08/2024 22:17

My Mum was a model in the 60's/70's and I still have some clothes that she had from her job that are almost child sized. It was a "look". Twiggy was naturally very slim and small framed. My daughter is the same. I'm not, I hasten to add!

I love your mum's photos! She is so beautiful, and obviously not emaciated, just naturally slim. Your dad on their wedding day..... his face was all "OMG I cant believe she is marrying ME!!" same with your DD and she looks so much like your mum!

ETA you are also very beautiful and if it werent for the fact that you are so lovely I would hate you!

That would translate to a size 14 or so these days. Any photo of MM will tell you she wasn’t a size 6-8 in today’s terms.

HRTQueen · 17/08/2024 00:02

I meant MM clothes were a UK size 8 not American size 8

she had a small build with a curvy figure

Kim Kardashian couldn’t do the Happy Birthday Mr President dress up she is very small but bigger than MM

PyongyangKipperbang · 17/08/2024 00:03

I am "curvy" but a size 8.

I have a classic hourglass figure, always have had whether a size 8 or a size 22 (yes, I have been both) as has my sister and our mum. You can be curvy AND slim, curvy doesnt always mean plus sized it means you have curves regardless of the direction they curve.

NotDonna · 17/08/2024 00:05

They played isle of wight last year - great band

She had the same chest and hip measurements as me (I have a larger waist though!) and I’m a size 8-10.

HRTQueen · 17/08/2024 00:06

Yes I used to be a 8-10 and very curvy

now a size 14-16 still curvy and now also a few stone over weight

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/08/2024 00:06

I was skinny like twiggy. Small boned. My 16 yo dd has anorexia and at her lowest weight weighed more than I did at her age. She’s also shorter than me. If you look at Twiggy’s face, it is still round and has a certain amount of puppy fat (or whatever I should call it), my dd otoh lost a lot of that. I don’t think Twiggy starved herself.

She would definitely fit into a 6-8 in todays terms. And in the pics where she was bigger she would have fit into a 10 max I'd say.
