I knew she was skinny but I never knew how bad it was! Looking at those photos of her in the 60s is painful. Why do we do this to ourselves? Have we done this since time began?

I was just reading how in the Victorian times there was another skinny phase where women liked to look skinny and weak like they’d had TB. Awful!

Does anyone know if it’s ever been fashionable to be healthy?

She was most likely a US size 6-8 which would be 10-12 in the UK. Which in turn would be more like a 12-14 in today’s sizing - if you buy vintage clothes the sizing comes up very small.

Thalia31 · 18/08/2024 20:23

kim kardashian couldn’t get in to marylin dress she had to alter it she was a size 6. It was tiny.

I made the same point about US sizes but you’ve gone the wrong way 10-12 vintage would be 8-10 now.

size 6 didn’t exist in the 1950s. On her early model card MM was stated to be 5’6”, 118lbs (same weight as when she died and BMI 19) and 36 24 34. She was a 1950s size 12 and a modern 6-8.

Yes didn't someone try to wear MM's dress and find it was teeny? It's interesting to compare sizes.

Yes, Kim Kardashian

You've got yourself confused. A 10-12UK back then would be an 8 in today's sizes. You've gone the wrong way v

In any case, she has a very curvy body so she doesn't fit any standard sizes her waist was 22-23inches in her heyday. That's a current UK 4-6. Her chest was 35-36 so a 10-12 today.

So you can't really state what size she would be today. But she was tiny. 115-118lbs. About 51-53kg. That's just above 8 stone at 5'5"

I think she burst on to the scene in about 1966, at that point fashion was heavily influenced by the 1920s and the tall flat chested boyish figure, also bobbed and short hair cuts. You see it in twiggy, cilla black, sandie shaw, Cathy McGowan etc, all the very young ones of that time. My mum idolised them all back then. She modelled her hair on Cathy’s, although my mum was short and bigger busted, it never knocked her confidence, she just loved being young at that time, just took influence from the fashion and enjoyed herself. But as has been mentioned, twiggy and all of them were very young, that’s the point, fashion is aimed at the young, we all progress from that and get older, oh to be as thin as I was when I first thought I was fat, sigh!

Yes, I think (not absolutely certain) it was Chrissy Tiegen, who is not a large woman, couldn't fit an auction item.

Update:
My sister says it was Kim Kardashian. There is no way any of the Kardashian women, besides Kendall, could wear that dress. Now sis says it was a replica.

Marilyn Monroe was, in reality a size 6 - 8 therefore not "very curvy"

She was very curvy. A 22 inch waist and 35 hips = curves. she wasn't overweight but its still a different aesthetic to the Twiggy look

MM had a large bust, but she was very thin 36-23-33 when she sang happy birthday to JFK.
1950s sizing was tiny, at a size 6 i has a 1950s size 12 dress that fitted perfectly.

Edited

Kim K wore the original dress to do the red carpet then changed into a replica. She had to lose over a stone to fit in it

Sorry, but you are being massively unreasonable. Not sure what you are implying about twiggy but seems you think she was anorexic. I grew up in the 70s/80s.. you could count on one hand who was overweight. I was very thin and ate like a horse but we were not allowed junk/processed food. We were allowed treats, one a day...sweets, choc, or crisps. Saturday night was eating out/takeaway night as my mum declared it her night off and my dad was the worst cook apart from a fry up! Asides from that, we walked everywhere, getting a lift from parents was lame!

Garlicfest · 19/08/2024 03:01

I had raging anorexia from 1971 - 1976. I idolised Twiggy, Jerry Hall and all those beautiful, rake-thin young women. Was extremely fashionable, with painstaking makeup, but never seemed to be thin enough or glamorous enough (in my own eyes). There were serious problems at home, which no doubt caused the mental illness, but all the thinspiration fed my hip-bone obsession.

I've noticed a lot of very thin models this year - thinner than the 1970s girls - and I have to say it upsets me.

I sat near Michael Ball at a concert last year
He was with his wife, Cathy McGowan. She still seems impossibly glamorous. The 60s were something else.

She was a 12 in her day but sizing is very different now!

Yes, I was a size 10 in the 60s and 70s, when I weighed under 8 stone. I’m now nearly 3 stone heavier and still wear mainly size 10.

queenofarles · 19/08/2024 08:50

kim kardashian couldn’t get in to marylin dress she had to alter it she was a size 6. It was tiny
Thats because Kim’s butt is enhanced they couldnt zip the dress up, that’s why she had a coat to conceal the open gap.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 19/08/2024 08:59

I have an original 70s dress from a vintage shop
I got for a party when I was late 20s probs weighed about 9.10lb at the Time.

It's a size 16 and I can't get into it anymore. I'm now 10.8lb and a size 12/14 in todays sizes.

JoBrandsCleaner · 19/08/2024 10:32

What about what we are doing to ourselves now? It’s normal these days to be obese. Some people eat takeaways, cake, chocolate and crisps and drink too much, most days.

Kim Kardashian - she had to crash diet to be able to get in it and basically had to be seen into it

HRTQueen · 19/08/2024 13:16

Roseanne Barr who once made a comment about Marilyn Monroe being a larger woman. She was certainly curvier than many of the popular actresses in the 60’s

and then curvy somehow became a description also being overweight. So anyone described as curvy was also in this category. it’s been very damaging as we really have lost sight as to what being a healthy weight is

Purrer · 20/08/2024 10:20

Yalta · 17/08/2024 08:10

But certain bones are supposed to stick out

Eating so you cover yourself in a layer of fat is just not healthy

People ate off dinner plates that would be considered little more than side plates now so naturally ate less

Todays “I am fat so that makes me gorgeous” trend has skewed what is seen as healthy

A doctor told me that it’s actually quite good to have a bit of extra fat in case of serious illness- you have that reserve to lose.

Prema12 · 20/08/2024 11:12

Purrer · 20/08/2024 10:20

A doctor told me that it’s actually quite good to have a bit of extra fat in case of serious illness- you have that reserve to lose.

Yeah being very slim can be an issue too with certain things like ADHD meds, some places won't prescribe them if the BMI is lower than 18 or 18.5.

My doctor said she wouldn't really want to go on them because my BMI is around 19 and she didn't want me losing more weight. I was reluctant anyway because I'm terrified of making my sleep problems worse, but if I do go on them it sounds like it could be a battle to keep weight on and that if I lost some I might not be prescribed any more medication.

Newsenmum · 20/08/2024 11:59

There is nothing good about being underweight and can have serious health consequences. Being overweight is also an issue but not generally strived for (and slightly overweight - I mean slightly - is more healthy than underweight). I take issue with it as it causes problems for women and teenage girls.
