Yes, agreed.

Thought this statement from Yuval Harari (haven't seen it posted on the thread, so here it is via Anton Gerashchenko) was worth posting - https://x.com/Gerashchenko_en/status/1839210562732847613 - noting of course that Yuval Harari is sitting in Jerusalem (where there were sirens again today, my DD is now in Jerusalem) but he is absolutely right - "One of the worst monsters of mankind is returning": historian Yuval Noah Harari has called Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine the most important conflict taking place in the world.

Thanks! I have a lot of time for Yuval Noah Harari.

I haven’t listened yet but will do, just flagging that the latest episode of Silicon Curtain is an interview with the person who runs the Darth Putin X profile.

It does seem a little like deliberate taunting. D'you suppose they will also throw dead cows?

UNITED24 Media Telegram Highlights

The Netherlands will transfer part of its decommissioned F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, according to the country’s Ministry of Defense.
β€œThe era of the F-16 has ended for the Air Force, but not for the F-16 itself. Of the 18 aircraft that were either not sold or written off, 14 are currently in Romania. Fighter pilots, both Ukrainian and Romanian, are being trained here. The Netherlands is now providing Ukraine with the remaining F-16s to aid in their fight against Russia,” the statement said.

β€œIn just one week, the Russian army used nearly 900 aerial bombs, over 300 Shaheds, and more than 40 missiles,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The United States has announced an additional $1 million grant to the International Center for the Study of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) to help protect Ukrainian cultural heritage for future generations, according to Bridget Brink, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine.

The production of β€œShaheds” in Russia is nearly a year ahead of schedule, according to the Institute for Science and International Security.
The β€œAlabuga” industrial zone was initially expected to supply 6,000 drones to the Russian Armed Forces by September 2025. However, Alabuga is ahead of schedule, having already delivered about 4,500 Shaheds by April 2024 and more than 6,000 by August 2024.
The fact that Russia is producing dozens of β€œShaheeds” almost daily in Ukraine further confirms the increase in drone production.

The UN General Assembly has shown that it cannot solve the pressing issues, according to Voice of America.
Experts say President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s presence at the UN General Assembly was an important step in drawing international attention to Russia’s war in Ukraine. However, it is unlikely to lead to significant change.
Analysts also note that the UN General Assembly, in its current form, is unable to address global issues related to war, whether it’s Ukraine, Israel, or Gaza.

πŸ‡·πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¨πŸ‡³The West has evidence that China supplied weapons to Russia for the war, according to The Times https://www.thetimes.com/world/russia-ukraine-war/article/china-supplied-weapons-to-russia-ukraine-war-lk7j2jb8v
Western officials reported that a Chinese company sent a range of specialized military drones to Russia for testing last year, which Russia intends to use in Ukraine.
A source for The Times also confirmed a Reuters report from earlier this week, stating that Russia has launched a project in China to develop and manufacture long-range strike drones for use against Ukraine.

In the city of Yeysk, Krasnodar Krai, Russia, a military airfield is on fire following a drone attack, where β€œKinzhal” missiles may have been stored, according to local channels
Explosions were heard in various regions of Russia overnight, with fires reported as well. In the village of Kotluban, Voronezh Oblast, an ammunition depot is burning. Official authorities claim that air defense systems allegedly shot down 125 drones.

Ukraine has not yet received permission to use Western weapons for strikes deep into Russian territory, according to President Zelensky's spokesperson, Serhiy Nykyforov.

After Elon Musk presented Giorgia Meloni with the The Atlantic Council Global Citizen Award in New York, she took the opportunity to firmly state that Ukraine must win β€” and that the West, if it still believes in democracy and dignity, must help.

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¨πŸ‡European countries are increasingly refusing to purchase Swiss weapons
Swissinfo cites https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/foreign-affairs/european-nations-snub-swiss-made-weapons-over-ukraine-restrictions/87599015 Germany as an example, which has close ties to Switzerland's defense industry but has excluded several Swiss companies from tenders due to Switzerland's refusal to allow the re-export of ammunition to Ukraine.
The Netherlands has also limited the purchase of Swiss arms due to the blocking of the re-export of 96 Leopard tanks stored in Italy. According to media reports, similar decisions have been made by Spain and Denmark.
"These statements do not deal a serious blow to the Swiss defense industry, but they show that Europe wants Switzerland to change its course. Swiss companies should be able to export their products both for financial reasons and to remain integrated into international supply chains," writes Swissinfo.
The publication reminds readers that Switzerland does not supply weapons to countries engaged in conflict, as its neutrality prohibits this. However, a referendum is expected in 2025 to decide whether to allow the re-export of weapons to countries exercising their right to self-defense.

β€˜Clear evidence’ China supplied weapons to Russia for Ukraine war

Report obtained by western officials would point to a significant escalation of Beijing’s involvement in the conflict

Thank God for that! All those space weapons Burkina Faso has were making me really nervous and keeping me awake at night.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 29/09/2024 12:48

well you say that, and so did I to my partner, and he informed me in a proper geeky way that Burkina Faso is actually one of the better places to launch into space from, since it's near the Equator.

I haven't trained him out of mansplaining yet, either.

Was just coming on to say. I do love MG!

heldinadream · 29/09/2024 17:14

I'm just popping on to say how pissed off I am at how little attention Ukraine is getting on the mainstream news ATM. Middle East and Tory leadership. And Rosie Duffield. Not much else.
UKRAINE ffs! Really really important! Putin must be laughing. Bit quiet here too, so I thought I'd just come along and shout a bit.
SLAVA UKRAINI!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 29/09/2024 17:16

There was quite a long section abut Ukraine in the news on the World Service, if that counts as mainstream?

heldinadream · 29/09/2024 17:33

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime well it does and it doesn't I guess.
I do listen a lot to the WS but a lot of people don't and I'm concerned at how little attention it's getting in your bog-standard daily news. I think WS listeners are mostly already well-informed.
But it's true I may have missed it today because I'm recovering from a vomiting bug and have been glued to the sofa with mostly Sky News on all day and no strength to do anything much and I've just been shocked at how narrow their subject range has been today. Over and over with the Tory leadership contest and absolutely nothing on Ukraine.

WinterMorn · 29/09/2024 17:58

@heldinadream get well soon. If it’s any consolation, my allergies are absolutely killing me at the moment and I am a sneezy, irritable, eczema covered mess.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 29/09/2024 18:05

Oh, get well soon, heldinadream, that's horrible bad luck.

heldinadream · 29/09/2024 18:47

@WinterMorn I'm sorry to hear that and that sounds far worse, this is just one of those passing things. I've had eczema and it's really distressing. I hope it eases for you soon. I love your name BTW. πŸ’“
@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime thank you. I'm on the mend, it was a 36 hour thing. Nasty but short! (Like Putin! πŸ˜‚)

That's definitely the worrying thing. All very well looking forward to Putin's death, downfall, dethroning, but there are no guarantees as to what happens next and the possibility it could be worse is presumably high.

To be honest though, I can't think of many scenarios which wouldn't be an improvement in some way.

DdraigGoch · 29/09/2024 21:41

I am counting on the chaos in the aftermath of Putin's death and jostling for power taking the Kremlin's focus off Ukraine for a while. There may be a worse person coming in but short of national mobilisation, which is risky for Putin never mind a usurper, I am not sure how much more the Russian military and war economy can direct towards Ukraine.

@heldinadream I like your description of Putin as nasty and short. Hopefully that could apply to his life as well.

Russia has announced conscription of another 133,000 between tomorrow and Dec. I suspect the impact will be minimal on the fighting but it speak to me to Putin’s reluctance for general mobilisation.

It’ll get to the point he announces mobilisation and there’s no one left to mobilise! Makes the politics of it a bit easier if they’re all already dead I suppose…..
