This might sound ridiculous but surely presenting anything close to confidential to Trump is a serious info-security risk? The man kept top secret document in his gold plated bathroom for heavens sakes. I wonder if what he sees will be a simpler, less confidential version of what Zelenskyy presents to Biden/Harris.

Igotjelly · 19/09/2024 13:05

Then if we want to get really conspiratorial there's the chance he might just outright tell the Russians about what's being proposed..... ooh maybe they'll give him a fake version to see if it gets leaked Grin

Hate to be controversial say it but I’d be a bit wary of anything the BBC put out on this particular topic…I think it’s almost inevitable one of their reporters would start spinning the β€œirresponsible” Israel line.

All the credible analysis I’ve seen points to supply chain interdiction aimed at targeting devices going to Hezbollah operatives.

Oh goodness, no, this idea didn't come from the BBC. The link was just to show the size of some of the apparent explosions. Blame me, not the Beeb!

It's extremely reassuring to hear what you say about the suppy chain, and I will be very glad if that is true.

Yes, in my judgement, too, allowing explosive devices to go out randomly would be irresponsible. A year ago it's not a thought that would have crossed my mind in regard to Israel. However after the major attack on Israel, there's been a drastic change in the level of civilian casualties the current Israeli government seems to deem acceptable. So I don't have any feel for what they currently deem too many bystander casualties.

The pagers being as targeted an attack as possible is much more what I would have expected from Israel in previous years. (Though still with a high level of injured among bystanders and medical staff.)

I don't see the problem with a few digressions as long as it doesn't go too far. It's interesting!

There was the Lebanon ammonium nitrate explosion too https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Beirut_explosion Hundreds dead and the city half-devastated.

Very alarmingly there is a Russian ship filled with ammonium nitrate floating right outside Norway's Bergen, home to important naval base Haakonsvern and a large part of Norway's oil/marine/fishing industry. The ship claims it has no power.

Shock Yeah, that's concerning.

Yep, that shit already hit the fan.

Back when Trump first became president, he reportedly blew an Israeli intelligence source on ISIS to the Russians.

https://foreignpolicy.com/2017/05/19/israeli-intelligence-furious-over-trumps-loose-lips-russia-iran-syria/

It's not like it was a rookie error and he learned from it, because he's never shown any ability to understand the issue. And come to that, shown precious little ability to learn.

It's hard to think this wouldn't have had an impact on the US's partners' sharing of intelligence with them.

Israeli Intelligence Furious Over Trump’s Loose Lips

As the U.S. president heads to Israel for a show of unity, the country’s spies are alarmed at his disclosures to the Russians.

Good point about Trump potentially leaking info, but I’m so bloody angry about the audacity of Trump not to decisively meet the president of a country which has endured nearly 1000 days of war, bombing, torture etc. just when you think he can’t stoop any lower.

One positive though is the tech and social media companies finally start to expose the extent of the troll farms. The amount of bots spilling their nonsense venom on Zelensky’s instagram page is horrific and must be so damaging for morale.

L1ttledrummergirl · 19/09/2024 18:07

I wonder if the hospitals keep electronic records of who has been treated, and if those behind the explosions have access to the data?

A ready made list of terrorists to work through.

Key Takeaways:

  • Ukrainian forces conducted a successful drone strike against a Russian missile and ammunition storage facility near Toropets, Tver Oblast on September 18.
  • Continued Ukrainian strikes against rear Russian logistics facilities within Russia will generate wider operational pressures on the Russian military beyond the individual destruction of ammunition stockpiles and logistics facilities.
  • Russian authorities arrested the head of the Central Military District (CMD)'s armor service on September 18 on suspicion of receiving a large bribe, marking yet another corruption case against a high-ranking Russian military official since the April 2024 appointment of Andrei Belousov as Russian Defense Minister.
  • An unsuccessful armed assault against several offices of Russia's largest online retailer Wildberries in Moscow City highlights the fragility of Russia's domestic stability.
  • Armenian officials continue to criticize the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) amid worsening bilateral relations between Armenia and Russia.
  • Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova condemned Israel for simultaneously detonating thousands of pagers belonging to Lebanese Hezbollah (LH) members across Lebanon and Syria on September 17, signaling Russia's continued rhetorical alignment with Iran's Axis of Resistance against Israel.
  • Ukrainian forces recently advanced in Glushkovsky Raion west of the main Ukrainian salient in Kursk Oblast amid continued Ukrainian assaults in and west of the salient. Russian forces regained positions within the salient.
  • Russian forces recently advanced along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line, within Toretsk, southwest of Donetsk City, and in eastern Zaporizhia Oblast.
  • The Russian State Duma announced on September 18 that it approved a bill in its first reading that proposes releasing Russian servicemembers serving in Ukraine from criminal punishment associated with cases actively being tried in Russian courts.

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-september-19-2024

Key Takeaways:

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly declined a request from the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) to offset Russian losses by declaring another mobilization wave in spring 2024 likely to avoid political costs associated with involuntary reserve call-ups. Putin has since remained committed to his crypto mobilization campaign, constraining Russia's mobilization potential.
  • Mobilization in Russia remains unlikely in the near to medium term due to Putin’s personal fear that mobilization is a direct threat to his regime’s stability.
  • Russian authorities have reportedly tasked Russian forces with pushing Ukrainian forces out of Kursk Oblast by mid-October 2024 and establishing a "buffer zone" into Ukrainian border areas along the international border with Russia in northeastern Ukraine by the end of October β€” significant undertakings that the Russian military is very unlikely to achieve in such a short period of time.
  • The Kremlin continues to signal its commitment to improving Russian drone operations in Ukraine and drone production capabilities amid efforts to offset the social and economic impacts of a protracted Russian war effort.
  • Putin claimed that Russia must ensure that there are "no barriers" to the movement of Russian citizens between mainland Russia and Kaliningrad Oblast.
  • The reported transfer of Indian artillery shells through European intermediaries to Ukraine is reportedly generating tensions within the Russian-Indian relationship.
  • The European Parliament called on member states to lift restrictions on Ukraine's ability to use Western-provided long-range systems to strike military objects in Russia.
  • Ukrainian forces recently marginally advanced in Kursk Oblast.
  • Ukrainian forces recently advanced near Pokrovsk, and Russian forces recently advanced near Kharkiv City, Svatove, Siversk, Chasiv Yar, Pokrovsk, and Hulyaipole.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated during a meeting on the development of the Russian Armed Forces on September 18 that the Kremlin aims to improve Russia's federal-level training system.

Important points raised here by Nicu Popescu that give the lie to the idea (eg espoused by Trump) that a negotiated settlement will be the end. It's depressing to think we're looking at bedding down for years to come but it's also pretty clear isn't it?

(From Mark Leonard's World in 30 Minutes: Russia, Ukraine, and Europe’s war economy, 20 Sep 2024
https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/mark-leonards-world-in-30-minutes/id340460705?i=1000670134955)

"β€œWe need to plan for the short term and for the mid to long term. In the short term, we need to supply Ukraine with weapons so that Ukraine defends itself continuously. But while we also work on the diplomatic peace talk track, which seems to be on the minds of an increasing number of Ukrainians, but also the government in Kiev.

At the same time, we should also be planning for the very serious probability and risk when in a few years down the road, the war, which hasn't ended, by the way, is likely to re-increase in intensity. I think there's a high likelihood that with or without a ceasefire in the next year in Ukraine, it's very likely that Russia will re-attack again and will have another, will launch another assault on Ukraine's Black Sea coast or Kiev, trying to finish the job that it hasn't managed to finish back in 2022, when it launched this large-scale invasion. It is very important for European, American support for Ukraine to be continuing, even if the diplomatic track and the peace talks and the ceasefire talks reach some conclusion.

It will be extremely important to prepare for a new potential crisis. And that means strengthening continuously Europe's capacity to invest in its own defense, to invest in its own capacity to help allies that protect Europe, but also in increasing Europe's ability and agility to act with speed in crisis situations. This is where I think that's one way of structuring the immediate needs of Europeans.

What would be a total disaster for European security and European history would be to decide to bet everything on the idea that the next ceasefire talks will be the end of this war, and then wake up with a much more dangerous situation next to the EU and NATO border much sooner than most people imagine in Europe.”

The reported transfer of Indian artillery shells through European intermediaries to Ukraine is reportedly generating tensions within the Russian-Indian relationship.

I thought this was interesting. They discussed it on yesterday's Ukraine the Latest podcast and essentially said that there is a sense this is where some of the ammunition is coming to meet the ambitions of the Czech initiative. They also said its unlikely that this is happening without India's knowledge and that it's notable that they haven't tried to stop it.

Since the beginning of its invasion of Ukraine in 2014, Russia has been subject to significant sanctions aimed at weakening its military-industrial complex (MIC). Despite these measures, Russia’s MIC has reached its highest production capacity since the Soviet era, particularly in recent yearsβ€”especially following the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This would not have been possible without the technology of Ukraine's allies.

Finland to Host Two NATO Headquarters
Finland is set to house two NATO headquarters, according to a report by Yle. One headquarters for NATO's ground forces in Northern Europe is expected to be located in Mikkeli, near Finland's border with Russia. The second, for advanced ground forces, will be situated either in SodankylΓ€ or Rovaniemi in the northern part of the country. The final decision on the locations will be made soon.
Sweden has expressed readiness to command one of the headquarters in Finland, as confirmed by the defense ministers of both countries. President Alexander Stubb emphasized that NATO’s decisions on headquarters placement are driven by military strategy rather than regional political concerns.
Additionally, Finland is preparing to station a NATO armored brigade of 4,000-5,000 soldiers in Mikkeli, part of efforts to deter external threats, as previously reported by Iltalehti.

Ukraine participated in NATO’s annual C-UAS TIE (Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems Technical Interoperability Exercise) for the first time. This significant event included over 450 participants from 19 NATO member states, along with representatives from three partner countries.

UN Warns of Major Power Outages in Ukraine This Winter
The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) has warned that Ukraine could experience power outages lasting between 4 to 18 hours per day during the winter. These outages threaten essential services, including water supply, sewerage, sanitation, heating, and hot water, with significant impacts on public health, education, and the economy.
The report highlights nine waves of attacks between March and August 2024 that have disrupted Ukraine’s infrastructure.

Austria Seeks Alternatives to Russian Gas, Wien Energie to Halt Purchases by 2024
Austria, heavily reliant on Russian gas, is seeking alternatives as the country's largest energy supplier, Wien Energie, plans to stop buying Russian gas starting in 2024. Despite financial losses, this move positions Vienna ahead of the rest of Austria, which still imports over 80% of its gas from Russia.

India to Continue Buying Russian Oil Amid Low Prices, Says Oil Minister
India's Oil Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri, announced that India will continue purchasing oil from Russian companies not under sanctions, citing the benefit of low prices. Speaking to reporters in the US, Puri defended the decision, pointing out that European countries and Japanese businesses also continue to buy Russian gas.
India, one of the largest global energy consumers, imports 88% of its oil needs. Puri also highlighted that the nation's energy consumption is expected to grow, driven by increased use of natural gas and renewable energy sources.

Indian Artillery Shells Reach Ukraine Amid Russian Complaints
European buyers have redirected ammunition sold by Indian arms manufacturers to support Ukraine, a process that has been ongoing for over a year.
India’s export regulations typically restrict weapons to their designated buyers, with unauthorized transfers risking future sales. Despite this, India has not intervened, and the Kremlin has raised concerns during meetings with Indian officials, including a discussion between Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and his Indian counterpart in July.
Indian officials have stated that they do not export directly to Ukraine and have emphasized that the amount of ammunition involved is minimal, less than 1% of Ukraine’s total imports

Finland Plans to Confiscate Helsinki Hall from Russian Oligarchs
Finland is moving forward with plans to confiscate the Helsinki Hall arena, owned by sanctioned Russian oligarchs Gennadiy Timchenko and the Rotenberg family. The Finnish government has allocated €200,000 to create a separate law that would enable the expropriation of the sports and concert venue.
