Ukraine Becomes Key Market for Balkan Arms Manufacturers Amid Boom
Ukraine has emerged as an attractive market for arms manufacturers from the Balkan region, The Economist reports. Western Balkan arms producers have experienced significant growth, with Serbian arms exports quadrupling since 2020 and delivering β¬800 million worth of ammunition since the invasion of Ukraine. Bosniaβs munitions exports nearly doubled in the first four months of 2024, with factories operating around the clock.
Balkan arms are in demand due to their ability to produce ammunition compatible with both Soviet and NATO standards. Their relatively low costβup to 25% cheaper than Western alternativesβalso makes them appealing to Ukraine and its allies.
Although Bosnia and Serbia have laws prohibiting arms sales to conflict zones, they have found workarounds through third parties. For instance, the U.S. is a major buyer of Bosnian cartridges, which are redirected to Ukraine. Serbia, despite its refusal to sanction Russia, ships artillery shells through countries like the Czech Republic and Turkey.
Germany has delivered 14 pickup trucks to Ukraineβs National Guard in Kyiv, with an additional 16 vehicles en route, according to the German Embassy in Ukraine. These vehicles, financed by Germany, will support logistics and the protection of critical infrastructure.
