There's a pic of him crying!

Unbelievable, he should never have been allowed to compete.
How dare he have self pity.

This is a hard one - what he did was deplorable, but considering his very young age at the time of the offence, I think he can turn his life around and become a better person.

I know how I was when I was 19 - an adult on paper, but still so immature in my head.

Immaturity doesn't make adults rape children. Ffs. Sort your fucking head out.

Nothing shocks me on here anymore. Mumsnet seems to welcome pervs and trolls, it doesn't surprise me that paedo sympathisers are amongst us. And if we say too much to them, it'll be us that get banned. It's sickening though.

I'm afraid the Netherlands is very "sex positive".

He was returned to the Netherlands from the UK in accordance with the extradition agreement that had brought him to face a court. His conviction for rape was adjusted to the conviction he would have had in the Netherlands, that of ""sexual acts that violate social-ethical norms". Until 1 July 2024, Dutch law only recognised rape if coercion through violence or the threat if violence was involved. So grooming a 12 year old girl and getting her drunk didn't count.

Sex positive? Wtf. It makes you wonder how many poor kids in the Netherlands are being sexually abused. Shameful

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 14/08/2024 18:28

Two people actually defending him.

Tell me, can you imagine a 19yr old male and a 12 yr old girl? Physically? The size and strength difference is massive. The life experience. It just doesn’t bare think about.

This is an adult who took advantage of a ten year old, grooming her until she’s 12, then travelled to get her drunk and rape her. Telling her to get emergency contraception.

He’s a shit. He was a young shit then, now he’s ten years older. He’s still a shit and should be ashamed.

ThreeSides · 14/08/2024 18:30

Sex positive is a term used by those who want to erode others boundaries and normalise some very messed up behaviours.

HollyKnight · 14/08/2024 17:37

When you were 19yo, did you look at 12yo children and get turned on?

Or at 17, did you lust after 10 year olds and then wait a couple of years until you'd get a lower sentence so just bided your time grooming her until you thought you'd get away with it it?

This man is despicable.

@hotpotlover

no doubt we all did daft things at 19.

but I certainly didn't groom a TEN year old until she was 12 (so it was a 'lesser' crime, fly over to the U.K and RAPE A CHILD, in pain, for 2 days, tell her to go & get the MAP, then fuck off.

i think I'll forgive myself for smoking a bit of weed

I am so going to be flamed, but this is a touch over the top.

Yes what he did was wrong. But there is a large difference between a sadistic child sexual abuser and a teenager who made an error of judgement (albeit serious). Reading about the case, it seems to be non-violent satutory rape. And as for grooming, the victim initially said she was 16.

His own country has judged that he has been sufficiently punished. He can have a life equal to others. That includes marrying who he likes (or who wants to marry him), having a career and having a child.

People seem to relish denigrating him. He was probably hoping his child would never find out, or could be told at an appropriate time/age. That would impossible now. Also the victim in this case would very probably never of heard of him in the Olympics, if such a fuss had not been made.

This argument about caring about either his child or the victim seems to be ill-thought through. Nuance and empathy instead of raging on the Internet.

Oh fuck off

Pigeonqueen · 14/08/2024 19:23

Really sad to see posts defending him here.

The girl was 10 when he started grooming her. On what planet - ever - does a 10 year old resemble an older teen? Ever? And he was 17! It’s fucking disgusting and we need to stop playing into the hands of predators and paedophiles by sexualising children.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 14/08/2024 19:39

It’s a classic example of people prioritising a man’s sex drive over the safety of a child.

Ah, he was young and horny, we all make mistakes.

Well guess what. Most Young and horny people avoid raping children.

Paula Radcliffe will be along soon to defend the poor baby boy. Lock him up and throw away the key.

This is a hard one

It really isn't.

Flapearedknave · 14/08/2024 20:50

I really can't believe there are posters who find themselves able to defend a paedophile. Have a word with yourselves.

itsgettingweird · 14/08/2024 20:54

If he was hoping his child would never find out, maybe he should have chosen to live a quiet life and not compete at the Olympics in front of a global audience, maybe.

This.

I only know of the case - as I'm many others do - because he choose to put himself out there.
