I am currently unemployed.
I have been for 8 months now.
I have been offered a job in a spa as a receptionist.
It's 30hrs per week but the hours are shocking.
It's a week of 3pm till 11pm (Tuesday ,Wednesday ,Thursday and Sunday )
And then
7.30 am till 3.30pm
The following week

I just can't even think about working till 11pm
I will have no life at all will I ?
It's min wage too

I have no other job interviews at the minute either

Would you do this ?

Its only lates every other week. I would probably take it. Especially if I had been unemployed for a while.

Is there any chance of progression?

Sparklesandbeer · 13/08/2024 19:04

Laughs in hospitality.

It's 30 hours a week, not every week. Of course I eould take a job if I didn't have one or limed up

ItsAlrightDarling · 13/08/2024 19:05

After being unemployed for 8 months I’d guess you need the money, so yes I’d take it. It’s only every other week, so you would have a life on the weeks in between.

purpleme12 · 13/08/2024 19:05

Well surely it depends
I would not like to go those hours no
But if I desperately needed a job then I'd take it (because I needed a job!)

Butterflyfern · 13/08/2024 19:05

Yes I would. You can socialise in the evenings every other week when you have lovely early finishes. And get all your jobs done in the mornings when you have a late finish.

And you're off every Friday and Saturday!

As far as shift patterns go, it's pretty good.

Mrsttcno1 · 13/08/2024 19:05

After 8 months unemployed with nothing else lined up I’d take absolutely any job I was offered.

Dartmoorcheffy · 13/08/2024 19:06

It's a job. You need a job.

Without a job you won't have any money to have a life anyway so you may as well do it, and you get Friday and Saturday night off.

I've worked in hospitality all my life, those hours aren't shocking at all.

Needmorelego · 13/08/2024 19:06

The 3.30 finish on the alternative weeks sounds good though.
It depends on your other commitments (child care etc) and can you easily get home (own car, safe public transport etc) that would be my only concerns of an 11pm finish.

Happiestwhen · 13/08/2024 19:06

I think the nights would actually be fairly chilled and a lot less stressful than during the day. I also think that a spa would be a great place to work - the lovely smell & ambiance.
My friend does similar hours and she enjoys it , could you maybe commit to trying it for a year anyway?

betterangels · 13/08/2024 19:07

I would because if that were me, I'd need the money. It's also not every day/week. Plus, 30 hours? Yes, please.

ClaustrophobicKipper · 13/08/2024 19:07

If I was young and healthy yes.

Hairyfairy01 · 13/08/2024 19:08

Depends if you are a single parent with young kids at home I guess, as finding a childminder to cover those hours would be next to impossible. But otherwise yes, of course I would take it. I would quite like to have the daytime to get things done to be honest.

Philandbill · 13/08/2024 19:08

Yes I would take it. But then I currently work at least 55 hours a week so all the free time you'd have sounds very much like "having a life". If this is a difficult job due to childcare issues then that would be different. If no childcare to sort then this job might lead to more hours or a promotion.

aodirjjd · 13/08/2024 19:08

I think this is actually a great job to have whilst you keep hunting for something you prefer. Doing interviews around those hours would be easy.

TheGriffle · 13/08/2024 19:08

I would take it if you had no concerns re childcare, transport etc. You get every Monday off plus 2 other days and the shifts aren’t terrible.

greenwoodentablelegs · 13/08/2024 19:09

Yes - it is always easier to find a job when you have a job. plus you could look to train and become a beauty therapist

do you get access to the spa ?

Gawjus · 13/08/2024 19:10

The 11pm finish is only 4 evenings, once a fortnight.

From age 19 I worked a job in which I finished at 1am, six nights a week, every fortnight. You soon learn to conduct your life to suit your hours.

Singleandproud · 13/08/2024 19:10

I think the work environment on those evenings will be quite nice, you'll chat to those you work with etc. if you have no childcare to worry about - as those shifts are awkward for that then I'd absolutely go ahead. No job is forever, 6 months of this one and some recent work experience under your belt then apply for a different role.

BrieHugger · 13/08/2024 19:11

It might not be ideal but there are positives to those hours, and even if you only do it for a few months you will find it much easier to get another job with it on your CV.

Divebar2021 · 13/08/2024 19:13

Yes I would. There is a whole world of people who work late nights and shifts that are far more onerous than that. I used to work 7 night duties ( 10 - 6) and after finishing on the last morning would have to be back in at 2pm the same day. Brutal.

Grmumpy · 13/08/2024 19:16

I used to do those hours in a hotel as receptionist.i loved my job and had a great social life.

Lemonade2011 · 13/08/2024 19:18

I’ve worked shifts for years, back, earlies, nights etc I quite enjoyed them it’s not forever you might even enjoy it, you get time in the mornings and then afterwards if you finish at 1530.
a job is a job easier to get one whilst you’ve got one.

AnotherNameChange0 · 13/08/2024 19:19

I'd love a job with these hours
Go for it!

Positivenancy · 13/08/2024 19:20

If I needed the money then yes!

NerrSnerr · 13/08/2024 19:21

What kind of life do you have anyway if you e been unemployed? It's only every other week. Definitely go for it
