Would you take a job with a finishing time of 11pm?

I am currently unemployed.
I have been for 8 months now.
I have been offered a job in a spa as a receptionist.
It's 30hrs per week but the hours are shocking.
It's a week of 3pm till 11pm (Tuesday ,Wednesday ,Thursday and Sunday )
And then
7.30 am till 3.30pm
The following week

I just can't even think about working till 11pm
I will have no life at all will I ?
It's min wage too

I have no other job interviews at the minute either

Would you do this ?

Yes, previous worked 7-7 shifts (am to pm and the other way round)
I've also worked 4- 00.30 shifts and 5 - 03.00 which were both fine

Sfxde24 · 13/08/2024 19:26

Yes. What do you mean no life? It’s part time and you’ll have loads of free time around the hours and the days off.

ItsAlrightDarling · 13/08/2024 19:26

Have you got a lot of savings that you’re currently living off?

StampOnTheGround · 13/08/2024 19:27

Yes I'd take it, you're off every Monday, Friday and Saturday which is great and the late finishes are every other week which is fine - you can enjoy the day to yourself before them.

standardmum · 13/08/2024 19:28

Id take it if I were you. Then, if it's not for you, start looking for something else- much easier if you're currently employed

ThisHangryPinkBalonz · 13/08/2024 19:28

How are you affording to have a life with no job?

Yes, 4 late nights every other week is really not difficult.

titchy · 13/08/2024 19:29

You get every Friday and Saturday evening off. And you're only ever working four days a week anyway - of course you'll have a social life!

PlantDoctor · 13/08/2024 19:30

I'd take it. Sounds good to me if you can sort any issues with childcare etc.

RobinHood19 · 13/08/2024 19:30

People have lives during the daytime hours too, you know.

I would take it.

But I work 5-6 evenings a week, and 90% of weekends in a year, so those hours sound like bliss to me.

Personally I’d enjoy the mix of one week of “normal” hours, and another week of mornings off when you can get a lot of stuff done without having to take time off work - appointments, shop in peace etc.

ItsAlrightDarling · 13/08/2024 19:33

Why can’t you have a life pre 3pm on the days you’re working late?

CocoapuffPuff · 13/08/2024 19:35

Yes, if I had safe transport (ie my own car) to get in early and home late.

Easier to get a job from a job. Even if you hate it, its better than nothing.

DeliciousApples · 13/08/2024 19:38

That's a good point, if you have a safe form of transport home I'd take it as it's easier to get a new job once you are actually in a job.

Sotiredmjmmy · 13/08/2024 19:39

I’ve done those shifts in similar job, it was completely fine and I had loads of downtime, considerably more time to myself and flexible than a standard 9-5 job is - the hours really aren’t shocking at all

Beth216 · 13/08/2024 19:40

I'd take the job just because it's easier to find a job when you've got a job. Keep looking once you've started and hopefully you'll find something with better hours.

LiterallyOnFire · 13/08/2024 19:40

Yes I'd take it.

Abigaless · 13/08/2024 19:40

I finish at 11pm every day and it's great, I just get my "free" time earlier in the day. Those shifts sound even better as you get to alternate with an early finish the next week, plus you have the 3 non working days.

Underlig · 13/08/2024 19:41

Yes, of course. No brainer.

Movinghouseatlast · 13/08/2024 19:42

I worked until 11pm 6 nights a week for 5 years between the ages of 21 and 26. It took me an hour to get home as well. And for 2 of those years I went to college during the day.

So yes I would do it.

Allnewtometoo · 13/08/2024 19:42

Pre dc I'd have loved these hours!

Muthaofcats · 13/08/2024 19:43

I’d love those hours! You can still be in bed at a reasonable time during the late shifts and still get the whole morning and afternoon before starting to lie in / exercise / study / socialise. Then the next week you’re finished by 3:30 so again, so much free time! I’d prefer this to 9-5!!

Ineffable23 · 13/08/2024 19:44

How long is the commute and how much of an early bird are you? I think I would struggle as I am an early bird, but if I had been unemployed I think I would have to suck it up. Getting Friday, Saturday and Monday seems quite good. You'd only have to take one day of leave for a 4 day long weekend.

And the other week you get every evening.

LibertyPrime · 13/08/2024 19:46

Not those hours, i prefer the traditional 9-5 or eg 7-30 - 3:30 etc as i would have to factor in bus times and travelling etc

Littletreefrog · 13/08/2024 19:46

As long as there are no childcare issues or other caring responsibilities and you have a safe way to get home those hours aren't shocking.

My DS has been working 7:30am to 3:30 and 4:00pm to 11pm alternate weeks since he left school at 16 for his apprenticeship. Once he hits 18 the 11pm finish will change to 2am.

I dont think after 8 months unemployment you can afford to be too picky. Alsoboys easier to get a job when you have a job so you can take this but keep looking.

OneCoolPearlOP · 13/08/2024 19:46

I'd do it, provided the commute was max 15 min drive. Also a lot of parents work opposite shifts, so this works out great

Doingmybest12 · 13/08/2024 19:47

Are you working around children? If not then it sounds OK, early finish one week and late start the next. I would check out that I felt safe getting to my car at 11pm. Millions of people work shifts and on a two week pattern this sounds doable.
