Would you take a job with a finishing time of 11pm?

I am currently unemployed.
I have been for 8 months now.
I have been offered a job in a spa as a receptionist.
It's 30hrs per week but the hours are shocking.
It's a week of 3pm till 11pm (Tuesday ,Wednesday ,Thursday and Sunday )
And then
7.30 am till 3.30pm
The following week

I just can't even think about working till 11pm
I will have no life at all will I ?
It's min wage too

I have no other job interviews at the minute either

Would you do this ?

It sounds like you have no choice if you’ve been unemployed for 8 months. You can always take the job and look for something else whilst you work there.

StormingNorman · 13/08/2024 21:22

It’s four lates every two weeks and you’re only working four days a week. You have plenty of time for socialising.

I would take it as it’s always easier to find a job when you’re in a job (as the saying goes). So even if it doesn’t suit you, you can keep looking for something else and have recent experience in your CV.

Flexibility in a couple of them must have helped @SafariShoes but it's pretty good going.

Ginkypig · 13/08/2024 21:31

I know someone who does 3-11 constantly and has done for years

it’s fine they get up in morning at 8:30-9am and do their life admin stuff before work instead of in the evening like most people. Sometimes even meeting up for lunch then going off to work
they eat their main meal at lunchtime and take a lunch to work that they eat when the rest of the world are eating dinner.

they get home about 11:30 wind down with tv etc for a couple of hours and go bed at 2am.

i think it depends on family set up though but if that’s not an issue then it’s just getting used to it

Absolutely. I totally understand why just killing zero hour contracts is seen as a victory in workers rights but I made them work for me. I think the current contracting legislation (IR35) is far worse for workers as it places all the legal leg work at the door of workers not (typically big) businesses.

Oganesson118 · 13/08/2024 21:33

I'd love those hours! Practically the whole day free before you start one week and then a nice early finish the next.

Uklady23 · 13/08/2024 21:38

I had a job with hours similar. I actually preferred those laye starts as I found the mornings easier to get stuff done etc. I would take it for experience and money and it will look good on CV

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 13/08/2024 21:42

Well that sounds much nicer than 30 hours as a carer so I would go for it!

stayathomer · 13/08/2024 21:50

Easy to say I would (and tbh I don’t believe everyone here would without soul searching too!) but tbh when it came down to it would depend on how close it was, how dangerous the area was and kids too. Someone said above it would be fab pre kids and I totally agree, I think those sorts of jobs are fab fun and you’d probably gain a social life/ at least have a laugh! And I agree any job is a job (from someone job hunting at the mo)

blindmansays · 13/08/2024 21:51

It's a 11 min drive away
We don't have kids yet and partner will pick me up every night

Do you have a mega busy social life with hobbies you attend?

Well your right I wouldn't at the moment but thats because I have a job with hours that suit me very well. If I had been unemployed for 8 months then I would and thats the difference.

teenmaw · 13/08/2024 22:04

Jesus wept, 30 hour week with weekends off ten mins from your house with a personal chauffeur? Yes I'd take it, you come across work-shy. I did all sorts when I was starting out, including night shifts, double shifts (16hrs straight) streaks of 10 days of shifts. Unless you have a disability you're being entitled IMHO, sorry

DrinkElephants · 13/08/2024 22:05

It’s only every other week I’d do that, it’s fine. 11 isn’t even that late. I used to have 3/4am finishes when I worked in hospitality.

featherlampshade · 13/08/2024 22:06

I would absolutely without a single doubt take that job, those hours are fine. Four late shifts every other week are a breeze

Echobelly · 13/08/2024 22:08

I think under the circumstances I'd take it, especially as it's not every week. You can always look for something else while doing it. I admit, I would have difficulty doing that every week, I am an in-bed by eleven person but if I needed a job I'd still take it for every other week.

ThePoshUns · 13/08/2024 22:08

It's not that late. Try working a night shift.
They look pretty good hours to me .

That sounds a peach of a deal..go for it.

Munchyseeds2 · 13/08/2024 22:12

Nothing wrong with the hours and 11 mins away??
What are you hoping for??

GuineaPotato · 13/08/2024 22:14

Yes I would, you have no job, have mentioned no other offers. 3:30 finish every other week is when you do your socialising, or on the 3 days that you don’t work when you are doing lates

Ruffpuff · 13/08/2024 22:15

I work until 2am on lates in my job. It can actually be quite nice to have some time during the day during the week too. Working until 11pm after being unemployed for 8 months seems worth it.

ComeOnThenFanny · 13/08/2024 22:17

It's honestly not that bad! Shift work is a bit shit, but it pays the bills... I'm lucky enough to do reasonable shifts these days, but I've done shift work almost my whole working life. It's a job. Got to be better than not having one!

Princessfluffy · 13/08/2024 22:19

What is it about these hours that you don't like OP?
Why does being at work 4 evenings a fortnight leave you with "no life"?

If you are only working 30 hours over four days surely you have a lot of time to yourself?

ComeOnThenFanny · 13/08/2024 22:26

I used to work 50 hours a week, and one of the shifts was 18 hours... 1200 Sat to 0600 Sunday. And I did that for 5 years! I needed the money. 30 hours a week, and those shifts, is nothing.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 13/08/2024 22:27

I would love those hours! Assuming you don't need to rely on public transport to get there?
