I am currently unemployed.
I have been for 8 months now.
I have been offered a job in a spa as a receptionist.
It's 30hrs per week but the hours are shocking.
It's a week of 3pm till 11pm (Tuesday ,Wednesday ,Thursday and Sunday )
And then
7.30 am till 3.30pm
The following week

I just can't even think about working till 11pm
I will have no life at all will I ?
It's min wage too

I have no other job interviews at the minute either

Would you do this ?

Oh, it's not fair making me work until really, really late because I won't have time to play...
Sorry, you need a job. But only on your terms.
Sure, but I hope I am not contributing to any benefits you may be claiming

VeronicaCreepcheese · 13/08/2024 19:54

I used to work 2-10, which was 2-11 before Christmas, for late opening. It suited me down to the ground, as a night owl - probably the best hours I ever worked!

You've still got the Saturday night, with a later start on the Sunday - honestly, I'd take it like a shot!

LouH5 · 13/08/2024 19:55

If you’ve been unemployed for 8 months and have now been offered this job… you absolutely should take it.

Have I read it right that the 11pm shifts are only four nights a week, every other week?
So that’s only four out of fourteen days you’ll need to do that.
Which leaves ten other evenings free for you to have a life and socialise.

And how amazing is it going to be the days you finish at 3.30. These hours actually sound great 🤣

CormorantStrikesBack · 13/08/2024 19:56

I’d like it. Free time in the day one week for anything like hairdressers, dr appts, etc. get stuff done in the day.

Thunderboltandlightningveryveryfrightening · 13/08/2024 19:58

Do you have dc? Dh? I worked 6 to 11 4 nights
. My dh was a lazy fucker. Came home to fully clothed toddlers asleep on the floor /sofa. I had to get them ready /into bed and sort stuff for the next day. Unsustainable for long ime. A decent man will help you make it work for your family..

ButtSurgery · 13/08/2024 19:59

Absolute doddle unless you're struggling for childcare. I've worked all sorts of shifts, the only one I will never work again (unless it's between eating and starving) is split shifts.

I love late starts, but I'm a night owl and like to lie in!

edwinbear · 13/08/2024 20:01

I wouldn’t mind those hours at all, but I’m a bit of a night owl so not having to start work until the afternoon would be great for me (the 7.30 starts not so much!) but as others say, it depends if you’ve got small DC/childcare to work around. I’d actually love to work in a spa, do you get free treatments/time in the pool etc?! 😁

StasisMom · 13/08/2024 20:01

Absolutely, it's a job!

Raindropsonrosesand · 13/08/2024 20:07

I find it quite strange that you'd consider not taking it when you've been unemployed for 8 months.

30 hours per week is pretty light, and it's only 4 lates per fortnight. The offset hours give you plenty of time for both evening socialising with friends and doing things like exercise and shopping outside peak hours. Have you just got used to not working at all??

Spa receptionist sounds like a pleasant job too. Would be lovely if you get reduced price entrance to the Spa!

Kinneddar · 13/08/2024 20:07

It's 30hrs per week but the hours are shocking.
It's a week of 3pm till 11pm (Tuesday ,Wednesday ,Thursday and Sunday )

The following week

😂😂😂 those hours are far from shocking

Sounds like you're looking for an excuse to turn it down

Truetoself · 13/08/2024 20:07

How are you having a life now with no job and no money coming in? Is the state funding it?

junebirthdaygirl · 13/08/2024 20:09

Plan the morning so you don't end up sleeping late and wasting that time. Join a gym or go for a walk. Meet friends on a Fri night as can have a sleep on. Maybe you will get some nice perks at the job like free brow trim/ waxing/ reduced products etc. Sounds like a winner..go for it. It will be a lovely pleasant environment.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 13/08/2024 20:09

You’re being ridiculous. I worked shifts for years as a nurse. This included regular night shifts, actually overnight 9pm to 8am. I managed to have a very good social life.

Nn9011 · 13/08/2024 20:10

Take it, most people work shifts like this. You might find the switch from lates to earlies a bit difficult at the beginning but you'd be surprised how much you can do when working shifts like this!

Pieandchips999 · 13/08/2024 20:11

I like the sound of those hours. But then I am a night owl. I also work a ton including a second job ending at well after midnight

SauviGone · 13/08/2024 20:11

I’m not surprised that you’ve been unemployed for 8 months with that attitude.

Thevelvelletes · 13/08/2024 20:14

If no public transport available at finish time then no,I know from my own circumstances that would be £60 to £80 in taxi fares a week plus a bus pass £21 per week.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/08/2024 20:16

Sounds like the Holy Grail for somebody in a Shared Care Parenting arrangement. One week working late, the next home for the kids.

Beautiful3 · 13/08/2024 20:17

I would take it (if I didn't have kids or they grew up) while I.looked for another job. It's better than signing on. It's got to pay more than universal credit. You'll meet more people and make more friends. It will be nice for you. Perhaps you'll get free samples to take home?! My mil worked in a chain salon, and she always brought home samples. Loved visiting her!

Elphamouche · 13/08/2024 20:22

We do work these hours… it’s absolutely fine. You make do. At least it’s not every day. We both work 2 jobs each so the second job is 6-11/12 every night and then weekend work.

edited as just realised week 2 is early. Ffs OP get a grip.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 13/08/2024 20:22

Well I think the answer depends on your circumstances. If I needed the job for financial reasons, or even just to get in to the workplace again, then yes I would. It would depend on childcare for me, not sure if that's a consideration. But to be honest it would suit me if I had suitable childcare. I would still have family time at weekends. I also like my own space so the times would give me a couple of hours to myself before or after work, which I would use to do jobs and exercise without interruption. It would also mean every other week off preparing the evening meal for the whole family which suits me ha ha. I'd still get to do the school run some days too, and there may be the chance to swap shifts for things like school plays which are a pain at the moment working 9-5. So swings and roundabouts. But that's me, your answer depends on you.

dayswithaY · 13/08/2024 20:26

Yes, absolutely. I worked til 11pm for about four years, used to get home just before midnight then up to do the school run in the morning, no problem.

It saved me a fortune in childcare and I had my days free to meet friends, catch up on housework.

It served a purpose for a while.

LoobyDoop2 · 13/08/2024 20:33

Alternating weeks between early and late shifts actually sounds ok to me- much better than permanently doing one or the other. You get one week of getting it all out of the way early, and one of having the best part of the day to yourself. Best of both worlds in a way.

Sorenlorrenson · 13/08/2024 20:35

Absolutely, every other week, piece of piss.

Juyjuly32 · 13/08/2024 20:36

Do you drive OP to get home at that time of night? Agree with it will be a lot less busy on reception at that time. I would take it.
