I am soon to be going to my first wedding in many a year. Will be full of young slim fashionable types. I am none of these things, being almost 50, overweight and a bit of a slob.

MN has decreed fascinators at weddings are bad. A thick headband is acceptable.

Genuine thoughts on this one please, be as brutal as you like. Maybe with a kindly offered link to anything better. Thanks.

Having seen the replies on here, I imagine you won’t be any the wiser! They bear out the belief that everyone is different. That in turn means that- whatever you choose, you won’t please everyone! In my opinion, the only one you should worry about pleasing is you! Given that either a headband, a hat or nothing would all be ok for the occasion, you have a choice.
All you need to do is put each one on in turn, look in the mirror and decide how each one makes you feel. Give a score out of ten if it helps. There will surely be one that looks just that bit better than the others. If not, well then, any one will be perfect! This system has always worked for me.
Enjoy the wedding!

Love the dress but it’s quite boho and the headband is very formal.
I don’t think they go together.
Can you have a nice bouncy blow dry and not have any headgear?

I agree. Great on their own but not together

You'll look a treat with that dress and hair band! Lovely!

I really like it and I love head pieces in general. Hood London do really unique hats and head bands. Pricey but I dream of owning one of their events items:

Don't worry about other's opinions. You don't control what other people think. Whatever you choose, there will be guests who love what you're wearing, guests who don't and many who won't really notice.
You will look best in what you feel best in.
The last wedding I went to was the first for quite a while. I faffed and stressed. I was likely going to be decades older than most guests. What to do?
In the end, I went for classic simplicity and comfort. After all, the day was not about me. Ditched the fascinator because it was uncomfortable, and not really me. Also, it might fall off! More stress! Instead I used a velvet scrunchie to tie up some of my long hair in a ponytail. Didn't try to be on-trend, whatever that was. I felt happy and relaxed and enjoyed every minute of the wedding.
So don't worry about it too much, just enjoy the day.

I’m 59 I had a lovely fascinator for my daughter’s wedding a month ago.
I’m personally not keen on the wide headbands, but that’s me. It wouldn’t suit me.
I felt and looked just the part in it. (My counterpart - my daughter’s now mother in law - had a fascinator that looked more like a hat, but was still worn on a thin band.)

My hair was looking a bit flat due to the wind by the time the photo was taken!🙄😊

If that fabric isn't literally Matthew Williamson then it's very heavily inspired by. I'd lean into his aesthetic, so luxe boho. The curls would be good but finger brush them out so they're less structured and 'done'. I'd be more inclined to add some sort of decorative/ jewelled hair clip, rather than the hairband. As others have said, I like the dress, I like the hairband but they belong to different outfits.

I like this idea for your hair - i.e a jewelled hair clip rather than the hair band. I think the dress is lovely, you'll look fab!

I am waiting patiently for hats to come back into fashion. I like hats.

Hats aren’t out of fashion. Fascinators however have always been naff..

RuledbytheWashingMachine · 20/08/2024 10:39

It's lovely but like everything else even weddings have became less formal and more casual. Only those in their 70s wear hats. But that just might be my area. Most females wear their hair long and loose with a sparkly clip.

Not a fascinator. They are totally passé.

The only people who think this are people who are stuck in the 90s and haven't moved on. Fascinators of today are chic and totally stylish

@Hucklemuckle wow.

PerspicaciaTick · 27/08/2024 14:13

I've never recovered from the Sloane Ranger velvet headbands. My current modern reference are Tiktok make-up tutorials. I'd probably go bareheaded rather than wear a headband.

Bodynegative · 28/08/2024 02:44

Love the dress and I'm sure you'll look fabulous in it. As for your head, do whatever you like. Enjoy the wedding and have fun!

Not really the kind of thing we are talking about, when passe is mentioned. This is modern milinary, not the typical fascinator that went out with the ark, and ££££’s. Most fascinators are not like these.
