MN has spoken, fascinators are awful, wide headbands are OK, your thoughts on this one please

I am soon to be going to my first wedding in many a year. Will be full of young slim fashionable types. I am none of these things, being almost 50, overweight and a bit of a slob.

MN has decreed fascinators at weddings are bad. A thick headband is acceptable.

Genuine thoughts on this one please, be as brutal as you like. Maybe with a kindly offered link to anything better. Thanks.

Ha! I almost bought the same style headband for my wedding last year. It's lovely but there's really no need to wear something on your head if you're not a hat person. You could wear a fancy hair clip if you wanted something? My only warning would be that some headbands (I find), if too cosy a fit, can cause headaches.

(I do think fascinators are naff)

Thank you!

But really - even on a bit of a fat frumpy old woman?

(I do have a nice dress to wear)

I really like it. No reason why you shouldn’t wear it. It’s stylish and really quite understated whereas some fascinators give mad parrot vibes!

Jellyslothbridge · 11/08/2024 09:49

I like both the dress and headband. If you feel nice in it you should enjoy wearing it. There are not many oppertunities to wear a hat/headband/hatinator or dare I say even fascinator so it seems a shame not to. You can always take it off at any point. I love a hat and generally remove it before or after the meal.

I don't know really, I sort of feel I should make an effort. Not really a hat person

That bird wing is so dated looking- it looks so fussy.

Bare headed is fine!

It's this one

I have a nightmare finding dresses I feel nice in, I hate my legs, arms, bum! Have a decent waist and boobs though.

I have a feeling MN hate Roman too so I am probably doomed anyway😂

Dress is lovely- you don't need a headband to go with it, too fussy.

Cherubs4 · 11/08/2024 11:10

Love the colour and the style - very nice

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 11/08/2024 11:12

I am waiting patiently for hats to come back into fashion. I like hats.

SiobhanSharpe · 11/08/2024 11:12

I love fascinators, they're easy to wear and seem to suit a lot of people (well, me anyway.)
Its lovely, just try it on! I hope it suits you too and you love it.

Both are lovely!

ihatecoffee · 11/08/2024 11:15

Sorry but I hate these thick hair bands...makes women look like Anne Boleyn!

I also hate fascinatirs too.

What's wrong with a gorgeous classy hat?

Blackcats7 · 11/08/2024 11:21

Personally I don’t like feathers at all unless they are on birds as intended.
But you should wear whatever you want and don’t let MN put you off.

BaronessBomburst · 11/08/2024 11:21

I love that dress.
In fact, I have it. It's very long though. I'm 5'6" and unless I wear heels it drags on the ground. I need to take it up a bit.

beachwalking · 11/08/2024 11:23

Taking on board the comments about the style of the dress not matching the more formal style of the headband. Thank you, I think you might be right.

(Didn't read the returns policy of the headband, ordered in haste, 😬)

Last Summer I went to a lunchtime event and my hairdresser came and curled my hair in the morning, excuse the slightly blurry photo but do people think this would work better?

I love that dress OP and think the headband-fascinator thing you linked will look gorgeous with it.

Marcipex · 11/08/2024 11:53

I think your hair looks lovely like that and you don’t need a hat or anything else on it.

3peassuit · 11/08/2024 11:53

The dress is lovely and the hairstyle in the photo looks great. I don’t think you need a hat. Last few weddings I’ve been to, hats were in the minority.

Thanks everyone. Appreciate all the comments.

Just for the record, I don't care what a bunch of strangers on MN think, but I do care what people at the wedding will think. It's hard enough being an overweight menopausal lady with no fashion sense going to a wedding full of young slim trendy people. I will be far out of my comfort zone and it will help my confidence if I feel I look as presentable as possible. And if I'm the only one with a shower puff on my head I will feel like a bit of a twit. So any words of guidance from the wider public are very helpful and much appreciated.

Not that I have to explain myself to anyone 😉

You keep saying stuff like will be full of young slim fashionable types or full of young slim trendy people.

Unless the entire event will consist only of people who work in the fine arts or high end, non high street fashion sector, I doubt that apart from being "young" that will be true.I'm fat, post menopausal and given the amount of compliments I get about my clothes, including from young people, extremely stylish.

The head piece isn't dissimilar to this. The maker of this piece makes hats and head pieces for royalty, films, and opera and ballet, fashion shoots I like your head band, not so keen on the dress. I think the headband is too formal for the dress.

Head band

EnterFunnyNameHere · 11/08/2024 12:22

I think both dress and headpiece are lovely OP, just see how you feel about them as a combination when it arrives 😊 I think with that dress you could definitely look fab bare headed though (especially if you got it curled like your pic), so don't panic either way! Wear what makes you feel most confident.

I 100% get the fear of sticking out, day to day I'm pretty confident in my style and don't really care what others think, but more formal events you do want to feel confident in your look - and that is the whole point of this board surely?!

AhBiscuits · 11/08/2024 12:24

It's gorgeous, I love it. You'll look fantastic.

MaidOfSteel · 11/08/2024 12:27

I haven't decreed any such thing about fascinators.
Wear whatever you like.

SnowFrogJelly · 11/08/2024 12:32

Why not just do hair nicely and wear nothing on your head?

FinallyHere · 11/08/2024 12:51

I like to think of wearing fashionable clothes as an alternative to style, so you can play safe by wearing whatever is 'in fashion' and wouldn't touch a fascinator just now or... you can wear what you love, whatever lifts your heart because it is the essence of 'you'.

To be fair, i tend to love things that are very me, my colour palette and a shape and style to fit my small neat features and quirky sense of humour, with a casual chic vibe (or so I like to think).

Hate the tyranny of fashion.

faffadoodledo · 11/08/2024 13:02

I generally loathe fascinators. Especially the sticky-up ones. However this one is quite cute OP. I would however be embracing the vintage look of it and wearing it with maybe block heels and either 40s style pencil skirt or fit and flare number. Definitely don't pair it with a boh0 type look.
Just my opinion tho! x

Morningsiesta · 11/08/2024 13:07

It just reminds me of the millions of birds killed and species extinct to make feathers in hats. In the past, obviously. Then I think, is it chicken feathers? What kind of bird died to make it? My grandma used to wear one of those whole fox furs with glass eyes. Same energy.

pigsDOfly · 11/08/2024 13:14

That dress is gorgeous, the weird feathery thing, not so much.

Apart from the fact that I hate fascinators, I really don't think it's going to go with that dress.

You've got lovely hair, you don't need to plonk something on top of it.

I was mother of the groom at the last wedding I went to and absolutely nobody wore anything on their head.
