MN has spoken, fascinators are awful, wide headbands are OK, your thoughts on this one please

I am soon to be going to my first wedding in many a year. Will be full of young slim fashionable types. I am none of these things, being almost 50, overweight and a bit of a slob.

MN has decreed fascinators at weddings are bad. A thick headband is acceptable.

Genuine thoughts on this one please, be as brutal as you like. Maybe with a kindly offered link to anything better. Thanks.

I am waiting patiently for hats to come back into fashion. I like hats.

Don't wait! Just wear hats - you'll stand out from the crowd and look amazing

OSU · 11/08/2024 13:18

Been to a lot of weddings in the last 2 years as friend of bride and groom but at least 15 years older than them (46) observations:
Hardly anyone wears hats, generally mother of bride and or groom.
Sometimes younger really slim tall model like women wear fascinators.
The range of what people wear is wide.
No one pays any attention to what you wear as long as you don't get blind drunk and take over the dance floor inappropriately grabbing young men, you'll blend right in.
That floaty dress you have chosen is lovely.
Don't bother with a hat or anything, just do your hair nicely.

thinkfast · 11/08/2024 13:22

I think it's nice. But it's the kind of thing that could look fabulous or frumpy, depending on how it looks on you.

I'm 40s and saw a pic on social media recently of a friend at a wedding. All the same ages. My friend had something similar on her head. Everyone else was bare headed. My friend looked around 20 years older than everyone else.

Love both. But don't think they go together at all.

Dress is floaty headband is rigid and formal.

cardibach · 11/08/2024 14:37

Both are awful (including your link which seems to be the worst of both worlds). Wear a hat or don't wear a hat. Don't mess about with daft flappy things.

NewName24 · 11/08/2024 15:02

I do like your dress but that headband is awful and certainly doesn't match the 'vibe' of the dress.

I think very few faces / hair dos / outfits suit a wide headband.

Nor am I sure where you have got the idea that they are a 'must wear'.

I'm no fashionista, but have been to two weddings in the last two months and haven't seen a 'wide hairband' at either of them.
I've seen mostly bare heads, some hats, some fascinators and probably slightly more hatinators.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 11/08/2024 15:15

I don't like the dress at all but quite like the headband but agree the vibe of each don't work. Some clashing vibes are great together but these 2 aren't.

Gilbertwasawuss · 11/08/2024 15:28

It's absolutely perfect!!!

Traditional fascinators are dated, but this is gorgeous and you will look classy elegant and stylish.

Edit: Went to check out the dress... I agree with PP the two don't match.

I think you need something more structured and formal if going for the headband. If you want to wear the dress, no headband and no fascinator.

pictoosh · 11/08/2024 08:28

"Love the dress but it’s quite boho and the headband is very formal."

I agree. To me, the headband is a completely different flavour/era/style to the floaty boho dress. They don't go together.

Yes, same. I really like the dress, but not at all keen on the headband.

That said, the colours go together!

EveryOtherNameTaken · 11/08/2024 15:40

That dress is stunning. Like the headband but think it's a bit dark.

stayathomer · 11/08/2024 15:41

Fab and fab dress too! Enjoy the wedding!!!

StoatofDisarray · 11/08/2024 16:08

I like it and I'm in the anti-fascinator/on-the-fence-about-headbands camp.

zeibesaffron · 11/08/2024 19:53

That is lovely!

PinkArt · 11/08/2024 20:14

If that fabric isn't literally Matthew Williamson then it's very heavily inspired by. I'd lean into his aesthetic, so luxe boho. The curls would be good but finger brush them out so they're less structured and 'done'. I'd be more inclined to add some sort of decorative/ jewelled hair clip, rather than the hairband. As others have said, I like the dress, I like the hairband but they belong to different outfits.

Alwaystimeforacupoftea · 11/08/2024 22:51

I haven't worn anything on my head at weddings for over 30 years. I didn't know you had to and when I've been, not that many people have, they just have nice hair? I love your hairstyle, OP, I'd go with that and forget the rest myself.

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 12/08/2024 16:51

Just adding my two pennies. Unfortunately not on the headpiece though... But I just have to say...

That dress is absolutely beautiful!! And your hair curled like in the pic will look fabulous with it. I imagined loose curls as soon as I saw the dress.
Floaty, summery, colourful, confident... I hope it makes you feel like a million dollars on the day 😍

TellySavalashairbrush · 12/08/2024 16:56

I love fascinators and headbands- balls to Mumsnet.
Mind you, I can also never make a chicken last more than one meal for a family of 3 - so I am a failure by this standard alone!

HÆLTHEPAIN · 12/08/2024 17:38

I’m not a fan of the headband, and I do think it looks dated.

And at the 3 weddings I’ve been to in the last year, (2 very recently) fascinators were still very popular. I had one but it was more just some decoration on a clip than a big flying saucer.

I think it’s lovely

Jeannie88 · 17/08/2024 19:19

Please wear whatever you want to, who makes the rules? Who cares what's in or out unless you're 17, I certainly don't and friends have remarked that they like the fact I have my own style and don't conform. I'm in no way wacky or out there, I just do my own thing which respects the occasion, just more me. Xx

HarrietsweetHarriet · 17/08/2024 19:28

Lovely dress OP.
Lovely headband too.
But, as others have said, I wouldn't style them together.
I wore a big floppy straw hat to a June wedding albeit a fairly informal, laid-back, kind of a 'do'.
Are you wearing your hair up or down? Maybe a flowery clip might work?
Most importantly, I hope everyone has a really super day. I adore weddings.

Olderbutt · 17/08/2024 19:36

Love it ❤️

SLKsMum · 17/08/2024 20:00

The headband is gorgeous. But I would think that as I have that exact one but in black. Had loads of compliments on it too. It’s brilliantly made and really lovely IRL. Get it. You will look fabulous in it and your chosen dress xx

It's this one

I have a nightmare finding dresses I feel nice in, I hate my legs, arms, bum! Have a decent waist and boobs though.

I have a feeling MN hate Roman too so I am probably doomed anyway😂

Oh wow! Fracking gorgeous dress, the headband will properly top it off 💜
