My best friend has been attacked today.

She’s Brazilian and white, but because she has an accent whilst we were waiting for a taxi a group of very young, around 10-17 year olds white kids spat on her and started shouting fucking horrific abuse.

Police were there within a minute of our call THANK GOD and loads of people on the street stepped in to help, and if you were in Norwich today on Gentleman’s Walk. - THANK YOU for helping.

I cannot believe it has got to this point where my settled status friend is now having to give statements and recover after having a glass of wine and going home. What the fuck is this county?

Oi! Check your prejudice.
#normalfornorfolk

Norwich has definitely been known for its racist abuse of people. Norwich is in quite an isolated part of England.

I know people who have moved from Norwich to London, as they got so much racist abuse in Norwich.

They didn't get it in London. As London is more used to having a multi cultural society

Lonelycrab · 08/08/2024 21:39

Absolutely despair. Hope these bastards can be identified, tried and punished, hope they get the book thrown at them. Disgusted by some of the behaviour of a small but awful sector of this country that we’ve seen this last week😞

Actually it is shocking here, in my 20 years of being here I’ve never experienced or seen racial hate, hence my post.

Dd’s school is massively multicultural, she’s not growing up with racism.

It’s not normal for Norfolk, we’re not isolated, I find it quite vile that you have that mindset.

Aye, there’s zero racism in London. The streets are perfectly safe there. Ahem. 🙄

Ive had plenty of nights out in Norwich....i shop there at least once a week...Ive never seen or heard anything nasty...I walk around at night on my own as does dd (she is at uni there) like i said ive always felt safe.

As we are talking about racist abuse,

It is very much relevant to what race you are.

Abigail47 · 08/08/2024 21:45

CheeryUser · 08/08/2024 21:43

Aye, there’s zero racism in London. The streets are perfectly safe there. Ahem. 🙄

No one said there is zero racism in London.

Cop on.

Of course there is racism in London.

However some of my friends who are mixed race and black told me they moved to London, as it is more multicultural, and they are more used to all different types of people.

Norwich is in a more isolated part of the UK, and it is not as multicultural as London, and is not as accepting of outsiders.

Tauranga · 08/08/2024 21:03

You are so condescending. Perhaps the lived experiences of the people who live in the 'deprived white majority area' is entirely different to your own, living as you do in an area with "nice" well educated people.

As of course, well educated people are automatically correct in their political leanings, and deprived white people are automatically wrong, due to them of course being uneducated.

People have a different way of seeing the world based on their goals, experiences and values. You are dismissing working class white peoples goals, experiences and values because you believe them to be racist, thick and "not nice".

You are the one who sounds not nice.

So you are defending this horrible incident op describes? Or what?

EmeraldRoulette · 08/08/2024 21:46

@Cadela really sorry for your friend

I’ve been in my small flat all week. Feel tense and totally hemmed in. Going to brave the supermarket tomorrow. Not looking forward to it. Didn’t really expect to feel targeted on account of skin colour in 2024.

Even MN is really volatile atm.

Lol.

Youre saying in twenty years you've never seen or heard about one incident of racist abuse.

Yeah that happened. Right.

Well now you can say that you've heard about one incident.

As the OP has posted about it on this thread.

Beautiful3 · 08/08/2024 21:50

That's really sad. I feel very sorry for your friend. I'm scared this is going to happen everywhere. I feel like children will be attacked by teenagers.

Whoops I got mixed up in who I was replying to.

You are the OP.

I can tell you OP there has been a lot of racism in Norwich, way before the riots.

I've had friends who moved out of Norwich because of the amount of racist abuse that they received.

Tlittle · 08/08/2024 21:54

Sorry to hear that. I am local to Norwich and heard two guys being racist to a begger on tuesday there when I was with my kids. I was shocked tbh as have never heard it before there and felt sorry for the man receiving it.

MagentaRocks · 08/08/2024 21:55

These stories are scaring the shit out of me. My partner is black and we have a mixed race child.
I swear I will not be responsible for my actions if I or anyone in my family encounter any of this shit.
I have spent my life working within the area of ED&I and fighting for under represented groups.
I thought we were getting somewhere, I feel utterly sickened and depressed by all this.
Please let this be a wake up call - if you are lucky enough never to have think twice about where you travel, visit or walk, or never had to wonder if not getting that job is due to the way you look, speak or your background, consider yourself bloody lucky. It’s absolutely time to make a stand, and that’s with everything, casual racism, bad or wrong terminology, micro aggressions. Go out of your way to welcome and support new work colleagues, neighbours or families in school, who are from different ethnic backgrounds. Be aware and empathetic and maybe we can beat this.

Edited

I am one of those that doesn’t have to worry about where I go, if I won’t get a job because of my skin colour etc. I absolutely understand that I have white privilege. Unfortunately a lot of people don’t see that they do and there a lot of whataboutery whenever racism or any kind of discrimination is discussed.

I am one of those people that absolutely will stand up if I hear or see something whether is is openly racist or just thoughtlessness.

I think we need to accept that even if not actually racist or homophobic or whatever that we think in stereotypes, and can make assumptions even if they are not done with malice or any kind of intent.

I would love to see a time where we don’t have diversity departments, and no-one thinks twice about the colour of someone’s skin, their sexuality etc but it won’t happen in my life time.

Porridgenpots · 08/08/2024 21:58

As the PP said, we agreed at work that the racist bastard had been emboldened by other racist bastards and their dog-whistling, racist, political leaders.

This is one of my biggest fears about this whole rioting thing. For most people a physical attack is possible but unlikely, but I wonder if for the foreseeable racists have been encouraged, and normalised.

Namename12345562 · 08/08/2024 21:58

That is horrible, terrible and so shameful 😕 I don’t even know if it’s much comfort knowing that so many more people (I hope) completely condemn what’s happened to your poor friend xx

Abigail47 · 08/08/2024 22:00

And Norwich IS in one of the most isolated parts of the UK.

Norwich is not near any major airports. Very few airlines fly out of Norwich Airport. The London airports are the nearest major airport to Norwich, and they are 2.5 hours drive away from Norwich

So you have to drive or bus/train to get from Norwich to anywhere else.

Its takes a very long time to drive from (or train /bus) from Norwich to other parts of the uk.

I was just reading Earl Spencer's book last week. He grew up in King's Lynn, Norfolk.

He described Norfolk as. "A destination county".

He meant that no one drives though norfolk.

He said that it takes ages to get to norfolk, and that it takes ages to get from norfolk to anywhere else.

I thought he described it very well.

Feelinggoodtuesday · 08/08/2024 22:01

Getonwitit · 08/08/2024 21:17

For the last 5 years teens in my area have been out of control. Nothing to do with riots and everything to do with a left wing education system and parents who don't parent.

Where do you live to have a left wing party in power the last 5 years? We’ve just had the elections and the 2010-2024 coalition and Tory governments have just shipped out. Are you in the states?

Do you have a point?

HolyPeaches · 08/08/2024 22:03

I fucking hate this country😡 So so ashamed to be English.

The little scrotes that attacked your friend will come from toxic home lives where their parents/carers are just as bad as them. I genuinely feel in despair. I know there’s a hell of a lot of good people in England, but the bad ones are fucking ruining it for the rest of us.

Crispynoodle · 08/08/2024 22:03

That is so shocking and worrying my very best friend has brown skin and I would hate if this happened to them

Are you able to stop being nasty for 3 seconds because this is not about you, You don’t matter right now.

What does matter is my friend who has lived here happily for 8 years and suddenly she’s being subjected to racism for being white with a slight accent???

Lentilweaver · 08/08/2024 22:08

Even in London, where I feel generally safe as a brown person, I am wary of gangs of teenagers. Not to single out any demographic, but they seem to egg each on and almost seem to be daring each other to harass certain other demographics.
