In the heatwave? DH is keen to get in a last minute holiday before the schools get back but I don't think I could face the heat. menopausal also, so hot enough most of the time!

Norway?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/08/2024 17:02

Iceland?

Has ‘ice’ in the name. Might be nice and cool.

Also, there’s a penis museum.

Define "Europe". Madrid is +38, Porto is +22, Oslo is +20, Venice is +31, Reykjavik +12...

BeaRF75 · 08/08/2024 17:09

Europe is a big place, with a huge range of temperatures, so I don't see your problem, OP. I would recommend a German or Austrian lake for a gorgeous, outdoorsy break.

GradGirl · 08/08/2024 17:10

No, I’d hate it, very pale skin and menopausal.

I’ve had/booked a few special uk breaks this year and have really enjoyed the pace/no air travel/airports.

ChildlessCatLady · 08/08/2024 17:10

I would, but I would be very picky about accommodation. Sites like booking.com let you filter your search to only see properties with air conditioning (under "room amenities") - you may prefer to book directly with the hotel/property, but this site at least gives you a shortlist to research. Read the reviews too to make sure the air con is typically working and sufficient. That said, I've typically found Scotland - starting from Glasgow and up along the west coast - a reliable respite from August summer heat across Europe.

mynameiscalypso · 08/08/2024 17:10

I'm in France where it's 36/37. I don't find it too hot really. We stay out of the sun in the middle part of the day, swim in the morning and later afternoon and have fans on at night. It's relatively cool at night (18/19 degrees). I probably wouldn't want to do a city break but we (me, DH, my DS who is 5 and my DPs in their 70s) are all absolutely fine.

But Madrid is 38c this week, next week it's going to be 5 degrees less. Also, they have a humidity at the moment of 16% which means it's a very dry heat, much better than somewhere humid!

Plumbathread · 08/08/2024 17:18

I’m going to Cyprus in a few days and I’m looking forward to it. Also menopausal.

Caterguin · 08/08/2024 17:47

We went to Turkey last year, when temperatures went completely bonkers. I'm fair, but didn't burn. Spent most of our time on the beach or in the sea. It was stifling round the pool.

Angelil · 08/08/2024 17:52

LOL are you American?! Not all of Europe has a single uniform temperature, you know. Try e.g. the Netherlands.

gettingolderbutcooler · 08/08/2024 17:59

On one now in Italy. It's almost unbearably hot!

What the heck does being American have to do with anything? You see loads of people on MN who are British saying the same thing. 🙄

EasternStandard · 08/08/2024 18:11

Yes but where are you thinking of? I'm looking at forecast for where we're going and it looks good

Waitingfordoggo · 08/08/2024 18:15

Not southern Europe, no. But not just this year- I just wouldn’t go in July/August generally.

MarisCapri · 08/08/2024 18:17

We have just booked.

I need some sunshine and at the minute our longer forecast, apart from two days early next week, isn't great.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 08/08/2024 18:19

We’re off to do a European city next week. Going to melt!

May09Bump · 08/08/2024 18:24

We're just back from Portugal - Sagres, a bit windy - temperature warm but comfortable, everyone including kids enjoyed it. We ended up in Mallorca last year in their heat wave - it was not fun and draining - very oppressive despite pool. Not doing that again.

wellno · 08/08/2024 18:28

Cornwall is in Europe, OP. It's been drizzling today.

tadjennyp · 08/08/2024 18:31

We're off to the Netherlands at the end of August. Hoping it's just pleasant temperatures then as my youngest is not keen on the heat.

wtfissummer · 08/08/2024 18:33

Come to Scotland

We're in Europe and I'm contemplating putting the central heating in

DelilahBucket · 08/08/2024 18:34

Not long since back from Montenegro. The first week was 38/39 every day. It was fine. I'm very pale and I didn't get burnt and spent a good amount of time outside. If you're not planning on doing anything besides lounging around a pool then go for it.

So that means every other destination and property won't have air con ... ? I live in the Algarve and it is wonderful weather right now - and my air con is working just fine thank you! It is about 28-30 degrees during the day and 18-22 in the evenings. Perfect.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/08/2024 18:35

I would. A pool and air con - job done. We were in Cyprus once during a heatwave, never known heat like it. We didn’t even bother going out between noon and 4pm. Lots of afternoon siestas and books were read in a lovely cool room. However, I always found The Algarve ‘cooler’ in August, might be because it’s The Atlantic coast and not the Med.
