In the heatwave? DH is keen to get in a last minute holiday before the schools get back but I don't think I could face the heat. menopausal also, so hot enough most of the time!

To escape the current wind and rain? I'd be on the next plane.

Comedycook · 08/08/2024 18:37

I'm just back from Greece. I was dreading the temps but it was actually fine. 36 degrees, sometimes more but didn't feel as hot as it sounds. Air con helped a lot obviously and lots of pool/sea time. Sat in shade whilst around pool.

Oblomov24 · 08/08/2024 18:41

Pissing here in Surrey. I'd take Sunny 30 anywhere.

Just been up in the French alps, specifically chosen in the hope the temp wouldn’t be too high. It was a lovely 28/29 degrees. We were able to go for nice walks and swim in lakes. To be recommended! Go high up!

So that means every other destination and property won't have air con ... ? I live in the Algarve and it is wonderful weather right now - and my air con is working just fine thank you! It is about 28-30 degrees during the day and 18-22 in the evenings. Perfect.

Edited

Of course not ! The hotel did of course have air con . But with temperatures up to 38 it did not seem to be able to cool the rooms .

Buy my main issue was not being able to leave the hotel and see anything . Even the morning heat was too much !

Some people like the heat . The OP does not seem to !

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/08/2024 18:48

How about Northern France or Germany?

LifeIsGreatForUnicorns · 08/08/2024 18:51

We went to Greece last week! 42C most days ..
as previous posters said… swam in the morning/afternoon- had long leisurely lunches… made sure villa had AC in bedrooms and sitting room…
also menopausal… had a lovely time 😎

m00rfarm · 08/08/2024 18:52

I will say again - the Algarve has lovely weather right now - sun, blue skies and between 28-32 degrees at its hottest. I play tennis for two hours every morning, and it is certainly manageable.

pinkspeakers · 08/08/2024 18:53

I'd go somewhere in the mountains!

mitogoshi · 08/08/2024 18:56

Madrid is usually late 30's at this time of year. Coast is usually slightly cooler remember. Canaries are usually cooler despite being south. A great place for example if you aren't keen on heat is Gijon in Spain, we travelled via the Santander ferry

halava · 08/08/2024 18:57

For a fly and flop holiday, high temps are probably OK if the room is ACd.

However I cannot do those types of breaks, but each to their own of course. I get bored, hot and frazzled and feel trapped indoors because AC is vital.

For those of us who like to get out and about seeing and doing things, high temps are a killer. I was reading a blog last night about a family visiting Rome right now. They are nearly in the crypt of the Vatican, dead of course from trying to see the sights in the unbearable heat.

I'm lucky enough not to need to travel during the School Hols so mid -late September and mid May/early June are my favourite times to go away. Not to a beach though, I'm too fat for that! It is so much more pleasant doing things when it's cooler, and you feel like doing more also, instead of collapsing with heatstroke.

If I had to go away in Summer I think I'd go to Northern Norway to the Arctic Circle. It's the only place I can think of on mainland Europe that won't be like a frying pan!

Sallysoup · 08/08/2024 18:57

Yes! Going to Southern Spain in 2 weeks and hoping it's still lovely and warm 🙏

mitogoshi · 08/08/2024 18:58

Oh and I'm definitely in Europe the last time I checked a map and it's 23 degrees, muggy and horizontal rain going past my balcony (SW England)

Dr13Hadley · 08/08/2024 19:07

We're off to Murcia in 10 days time it's averaging about 31 there at the moment. BIL lives there and we're staying in our own air conditioned villa with a pool. I just can't wait to experience more than one day in a row of sunshine. I'll tolerate the heat for that.

Echobelly · 08/08/2024 19:13

Yes. but after last year in the south of France (average temp first 5 days 36C and super humid) I am never going to stay in Southern Europe in summer without a swimming pool or the sea on the doorstep, even if it means staying somewhere less 'nice'.

CitrineRaindropPhoenix · 08/08/2024 19:15

In Switzerland at the moment. It is a very pleasant 26 degrees so perfect for walking. The weekend is going to be warmer - predicted around 29.

gettingolderbutcooler · 08/08/2024 17:59

On one now in Italy. It's almost unbearably hot!

Also in Italy now and his heavenly - just how I like it! No air con, but old farmhouse with very thick walls, pool in garden, just perfect.

It's completely personal as to how hot is too hot. Just make sure to take sensible precautions, hats, water, sunscreen, siesta etc

CrepuscularCritter · 08/08/2024 19:21

Absolutely. I'm just returning from Italy and Greece, and I've only been meltingly hot once (lack of aircon in Rome hotel). It's been between 30 and 36 and no problem at all.

For reference, I'm a freckled strawberry blonde using Factor 50.

Theimpossiblegirl · 08/08/2024 19:29

I'm on Sal (Cape Verde) and it's hot but with a breeze. You just have to drink lots and adjust your body clock, so any exploring needs to be early in the morning, take a siesta or seek shade with a book, take it easy.

Terrribletwos · 08/08/2024 19:29

Absolutely not! Been there and done that in sweltering heat, never again. It was miserable. Staying out of the heat was a challenge and totally exasperating.

Looking to northern climes for future holidays.

TooMuchRedMaybe · 08/08/2024 19:30

I’m in Stockholm, had 24 degrees today. Will remain low to mid-20s for the foreseeable.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 08/08/2024 19:34

Off to Rhodes next week and can't wait!

dbeuowlxb173939 · 08/08/2024 19:36

Depends where and what you want to do, lying by a pool in a hotel with air con yes, walking around sightseeing absolutely not!

Girasoli · 08/08/2024 19:48

We're off to Italy next week and I can't wait! We'll just be sensible and do our exploring in the mornings and late afternoons/evening.

There's always the odd thunderstorm too where we go which helps.

Osco · 08/08/2024 19:54

I’m in the Algarve at the moment and it’s so hot. Really it’s only evening time that it’s bearable. We are staying in an amazing house but no air con which has made sleeping impossible. Never again would I book without air con. I have dark circles under my eyes due to lack of sleep. We have a pool but can’t spend all day there. However we wanted sun and a pool so we got that. But any activities during the day are a real effort, far too hot.
