Has anyone ever gone to wave at the Royals on Christmas Day at Sandringham?

Hello all

Yes I know this is extremely uncool but I want to tick it off my bucket list. And yes, I know it's August.

I'd be coming from central Scotland. So swithering about whether to drive or take a train and where to stay.

Any tips please?

Thanks

You better all watch the TV and look out for me! I will be wearing my tiara!

Sandringham estate is open all year round, it's just the house and gardens that close.

@ChallengingFigureANDUnrulyFlaps thre are so e lovely holiday lets in places like Brancaster, Thornham etc around the coast

ruby1234 · 07/08/2024 19:47

Possibly not really relevant but....
I'm just home from staying in a really lovely cottage at Snettisham Deer Park which is only a short drive to Sandringham.
Also a great pub in Snettisham walking distance from the cottage which does fabulous meals and is very likely open at Christmas.
PM me if you want the details.

I went as a child several times, in the Di/Fergie years. My Granny lived in Norfolk, and her neighbour took me. I remember it as fun and exciting.

Public transport is patchy in the winter, you will have to drive, and then you will get to explore the rest of the lovely coast.

Lots of lovely cottages up there to rent.

What a stupid and pointless comment.

Hope this dream comes true for you, OP! I think it'd be very Christmassy!

so, why come on this thread to tell everyone. Have some respect. If the op wants to do this that’s fine. Move to another thread, this one’s not for you.

Can I gently suggest that people RTFT, or at least all OP’s posts before plopping in something like this?

ChallengingFigureANDUnrulyFlaps · 07/08/2024 19:55

Thanks everyone. We are all different!

Taylor Swift does say it's mean to make fun when someone is excited about something!

Yes, stood in a massive queue in 2019 to see Meghan, but I was so far back and it moved so slowly that in the end I gave up and went for a coffee instead.
Take the travel advice already given, and if you do go, remember to look at the big gates when the Royals have gone home. There'll be plenty of people there with dogs which they're going to walk or have walked. A woman once told me that her best chance of being spoken to by the late queen was to have flowers or a child with you, or be in a wheelchair.

ChallengingFigureANDUnrulyFlaps · 07/08/2024 19:57

@upinaballoon lol! I can do the flowers but will have to hire a child and wheelchair!

I clicked on the link with high hopes, very disappointed it doesn’t work! 😂

Same!

upinaballoon · 07/08/2024 19:58

There's a car park which records when you entered and tells you what you owe when you go out but it might be free on Christmas Day.

I’d go with you if my circumstances were different over Christmas as it’s something I’d like to do as well.

I hope you have a great time.

upinaballoon · 07/08/2024 20:02

If it's wet weather, boots or posh wellies, substantial footwear.

Kendodd · 07/08/2024 20:12

OMG this thread has made me laugh so much. Good for you OP, go, and I hope you enjoy it. I'm not a royalist in the slightest, in fact more of a republican if anything, but I actually really regret not queuing up to see the queen's coffin. If I was closer to Norfolk, I'd join you Grin

ChallengingFigureANDUnrulyFlaps · 07/08/2024 20:18

@Kendodd I went out to see the Queen's coffin as it drove through Scotland, it was only a 20 min walk from here. I was actually on the BBC footage of the King's "Scottish Coronation" as well. Just a crazy old bird wearing a union jack hat AND aforementioned tiara ("less is more? No, more is more")

Yeah fuck it, these days I do all the (crazy) things I wanna do and don't bother with the things I don't want to do! So YES to wearing a tiara and waving at the Royals on Christmas Day. I will defo give my fb friends a laugh! And NO to hillwalking or getting up early to watch a sunset or bunjee jumping or whatever. If that's your bag, fine, but it's not mine!

I've just realised Christmas Eve is a Tuesday and technically our office is open in the morning. So I've requested the day off. So I can do the drive in daylight.

OP, ignore the startlingly rude people on here and have a truly lovely trip! Like Taylor, I think excitement and enthusiasm are such a lovely things and should be nurtured not crushed!

ChallengingFigureANDUnrulyFlaps · 07/08/2024 20:33

Other bucket list/bonkers stuff I've done (only the not uber outing stuff!!)

  • went into the High Jewellery dept of Tiffanys and they let me try on 2 x £3m rings
  • got arrested and fined for jumping in the Trevi fountain when drunk (having just got engaged to an unsuitable man after a whirlwind romance) (Reader, it did not work out!)
  • eaten lobster in Maine and strawberries at Wimbledon
  • flown over the Grand Canyon in a helicopter
  • fired an AK47
  • did the "loony dook" (swimming in the north sea on New Year's Day)
  • paid £2k to do a meet & greet with an A list star in Vegas
  • touched a piece of the Titanic wreckage (at exhibition)
  • seen Kylie's gold hotpants in real life

Just sent you a dm x

Also anyone around kings lynn - you need to check out Watatunga - such a great safari!

ChallengingFigureANDUnrulyFlaps · 07/08/2024 20:35

@theduchessofspork apt name btw! See above for other stuff I've done.

After this, I have to do New York (before I perhaps get too old/tired/ill to do the walking involved). But that's mostly it tbh.

There’s a lot of fun in that list 🌻.

Mama1980 · 07/08/2024 20:44

I've done this. Tbh it was lovely and very festive. Everyone was happy and kind.
Get there by 8/8.30 at the latest and dress for the weather, it might sound silly/obvious but there is no real shelter so don't expect to be able to huddle under anywhere should it rain.
Kings Lyn has some lovely Christmas lights usually. Not loads but they are very pretty, especially reflecting in the water.
I hope you have a lovely time and wish you well.
