Has anyone ever gone to wave at the Royals on Christmas Day at Sandringham?

Hello all

Yes I know this is extremely uncool but I want to tick it off my bucket list. And yes, I know it's August.

I'd be coming from central Scotland. So swithering about whether to drive or take a train and where to stay.

Any tips please?

Thanks

Yes, often when I was younger, there isn’t much else to do growing up round there! You won’t be able to do it by public transport or taxi on Christmas Day. The closest place to stay is the Feathers Hotel in Dersingham it’s probably a 20 minute walk from there. There aren’t any other hotels within walking distance. If you do drive there’s a massive car park opposite, they’ll be spaces available, it rarely gets full. Get there early if you want to be at the front, otherwise it can get 5 or 6 people deep. What else do you want to know?

Thankfully I’ve got better things to do with my Christmas day than wave at our outdated and overpaid monarchy..

A bucket list is traditionally for the terminally ill.

Maybe the OP has done everything else in but this is the last hurrah?

Not any more. A bucket list is for anyone who has a list of things they truly want to do before they die. We never know when we might die. the point is to not let the things that would bring you joy drift away, undone.

However when you get a terminal diagnosis it is often framed in - if there is anything that you always wanted to do then do it now

Hence why when people ask about bucket lists for many it is in response to bad news.

I would always be cautious and take the view that someone may be asking because they may not be well.

If I was going to do this OP, I would drive and find a holiday cottage or other accommodation on the N Norfolk Coast: Old Hunstanton, Brancaster, Burnham Overy Staithe or Burnham Market.

It won’t be cheap as N Norfolk is a favourite destination of very comfortably-off Londoners heading for log fires and bracing winter walks.

You can get tickets to enjoy the Sandringham Estate every day except Christmas Day, not sure where you would park to wave on Christmas Morning but that’s a detail you can research.

The Quay area of Lynn is interesting, Thursford Steam Museum does a fantastic ‘Spectacular’ that people travel miles for: book now if you fancy it, there are miles of paths over beaches, dunes, salt marsh sea banks, and some good pubs.

Bully for you.

Pedallleur · 08/08/2024 21:26

don't they go to a church on the Balmoral Estate? You would be better going there.

I think you're confusing:

  1. Balmoral (Aberdeen) - where they go in summer; and
  2. Sandringham (Norfolk) - where they go at Christmas

thanks. I'd go to Balmoral not travel 300 miles to catch a distant glimpse of some v.rich people who don't really want you there

Lifelover16 · 08/08/2024 22:10

Have a wonderful time, and I hope you get a wave back 👋🏻 from KC

This is a perfect example of the worst of MN

absolutely no need for this level of snark. In fact it’s quite pathetic especially in light of OP’s later response.

grow up.

Lovely place to stay, about 20 minutes from Sandringham. Go, and enjoy yourself, OP. I would love to go, but family commitments prevent me for now. Don't forget to report back!

Heck no! Just why?

emmetgirl · 08/08/2024 22:34

I wouldn't bother looking out of my window at the bunch of free loaders.

Heck no! Just why?

Because we're all different and we all like different things.

Bucket lists are very personal, they don't all have to be about swimming with dolphins or jumping out of aeroplanes. It's whatever makes a person happy.

OP I hope you get to see and wave to the Royals on Christmas Day.

Kendodd · 08/08/2024 22:44

Do you know how you get a seat in the church with them OP?

tinydynamine · 08/08/2024 22:58

I once waved at the Queen and her husband when they were on their way from Aberdeen Airport to Balmoral. They didn't wave back.

This thread has made me so angry. It's not my thing but so what? I'm no better than anybody else. If it makes the OP happy then bloody good luck to her.

So many of you are so desperate to pass judgement and appear superior. Thing is, you misjudged it. You just come across as spiteful twats. Get a grip and grow up. There is already too much intolerance in society.

SweetAmber · 08/08/2024 23:25

If you wait hours to see them then more fool you .

This, exactly. I hope you have a very enjoyable trip to Sandringham, OP 💐

HorizontalNotVertical · 08/08/2024 23:39

Completely agree, @JulianFawcettMP Also a pretty clear indication of who doesn’t even bother to read the thread before posting their snarky response.

BESTAUNTB · 08/08/2024 23:49

Kylie’s hotpants came from a charity shop, didn’t they? There are only ever bobbly M&S jumpers in my local one.

I’ll admit that my initial response to your post about Christmas Day was, “no way” but the posts about Norfolk have made the county sound very appealing and Christmassy so if you can park in the big car park nearby, go for it!

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 09/08/2024 01:03

Christmas in Norfolk is fabulous. We have two favourite hotels that we alternate. Both hotels are very laid back and serve lovely food. We have a walk on either Holkham or Wells beach on Christmas morning taking a bottle of champagne with us. Lots of people do the same so there is a lovely happy atmosphere. One year we went to the Christmas morning service in the family chapel at Holkham Hall. Then we just eat, drink and laze about doing whatever we want. For us it’s the perfect Christmas.
