What stupid stuff do you waste money on?

For me it's candles, and clothes in Primark that I'll either never wear, or wear once and chuck in the charity bag. Or getting tipsy on a night out and ordering (and paying for) expensive shots for everyone. I often wonder how much money I'd have for my retirement if I didn't spend so much on crap. Anyone else do this?

I only spend on what i need if i dont need it i wont get it.
I dont waste money on crap.

sixtyten · 07/08/2024 13:00

More books/ebooks than I can realistically read. I'd never consider books a waste of money per se, but I just have too many and am now working on buying fewer and actually reading more.

MonsteraMama · 07/08/2024 13:02

Books for me too. All of the bookshelves in my house are full, I realistically would have to retire today to have time to read them all. And yet. Every time I go out, I end up coming back with a new book.

Arewethebadguys · 07/08/2024 13:06

Fucking b&m/home bargains etc
Walk in and come out twenty quid down on mother's day tat, cereal bars, drain cleaner and bloody Tupperware!

Everytime.

I've had to stop going in or add b&m to the monthly Budget spreadsheet . . .

Arewethebadguys · 07/08/2024 13:07

Books! Yeah actually I mean that . . .

Definitely not b&m crap 🫣

Izzynohopanda · 07/08/2024 13:09

The dog, and I’m talking about toys etc, not clothes and outfits.

Booked an agility course costing fifty pounds. Only managed two if the sessions due to a holiday and dog getting fearful of the car, so couldn’t get there.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 07/08/2024 13:12

Not sure if i do, but to someone else it might seem like wasting money though, for example i buy lots of nail wraps, much cheaper than the salon and it makes me happy having nice nails.
When we go to a certain place i always buy us a gingerbread penguin, it's become a bit of a tradition now and my 7yr old loves it.

DancingLions · 07/08/2024 13:14

Probably the one that other people would deem most stupid is phone games. I don't spend a lot. £20 per month max. The way I see it, is that the games give me the entertainment value of £5 per week so I really don't have an issue with it.

I've reigned in most of my pointless spending over the years. Used to be the case that if I went somewhere I always wanted to buy "something" often for the sake of it. I don't really do that now. Coffees out was another, I've spent £££ on those. But I bought myself a really good coffee machine which overall has saved me a lot. I'm much less inclined now to spend £3+ on a coffee out when I know I can make the same for pence at home.

BigDahliaFan · 07/08/2024 13:21

Books, that I will never have enough time to read.

Plants - especially bulbs...so many bulbs! That I then curse when I am out in the cold winter nights after work trying to get them all planted.

hattie43 · 07/08/2024 13:22

Magazines and scented candles .

loropianalover · 07/08/2024 13:23

I am too partial to a scratch card from the garage, it’s a terrible habit.

shellyleppard · 07/08/2024 13:24

Takeaway when I just can't be arsed to cook again 😱😱😳

My DM, age 91, retired a quarter of a century ago - her mission was to start at the letter “A” and read all the books in the local library.

She is still stuck on the letter “B” - Bill Bryson 😊

MakingPlans2025 · 07/08/2024 13:43

Takeaway coffees

Sharontheodopolodous · 07/08/2024 13:46

Vinted is my weakness-i spend sooo much money on gorgeous clothes and shoes, that I never wear and they end up in the charity shop

Cleaning products-i buy brands like method and wiltons when I see them on offer (which is a waste-cheap brands are just as good,i fell for the hype)

I sorted out under the sink last night-there is no way am I buying anymore for a while-no family of two needs 7 bottles of cleaning spray,4 bottles of floor cleaner,4 bottles of fabric conditioner and 5 bags of dish washer tablets etc

I dare not clear out my bathroom-dp did a check a few weeks ago,and pointed out that if I used a bar of soap a month,I have enough soap to last me 4 years

Buy still I come home with more 'just in case'

AutumnOcean · 07/08/2024 14:00

Books here too. I'm a sucker for a pretty cover 🥲 also lipsticks. I'm still searching for the perfect shade

DoopSnoggySnogg · 07/08/2024 14:02

Can’t go so much as pop into Boots for paracetamol without buying unnecessary hair, beauty and skincare products.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 07/08/2024 14:03

Wax melts, phone games and iced coffee.

But I don't have any expensive hobbies and always have enough to cover my essentials as well as some savings, so I'm not worried.

Takeaway coffees

i only drink take-away coffee and i must by 2 a day (1 for me and 1 for him)... its an expensive habit and i don't NEED the coffee

CointreauVersial · 07/08/2024 14:10

I'm addicted to charity shopping. A few pounds here, a few pounds there, and it all adds up. My wardrobe is bulging - honestly I could wear a different outfit every day for a year and not run out of clothes. I just love a bargain too much to turn it down.

On the flip side I do sell things on (eBay or Vinted).....but not nearly enough.

GigiAnnna · 07/08/2024 14:12

Cheap real life magazines, candles and little ornaments from the Home section of Primark and Tk Maxx. They aren't really rubbish but I get sick of them after a while and want new stuff.

twentysevendresses · 07/08/2024 14:12

Perfume...I love beautiful perfume and honestly do NOT need anymore...but I've just ordered another bottle 🤦‍♀️

This is me too. Go in for bargain shower gel. Definitely don't need a basket because I'm not getting much.

Leave 40 minutes later with a trolly full...

Peonies12 · 07/08/2024 14:17

Books from charity shops. but otherwise, working from home in a small town has its perks, I very rarely ever go to big shops (also hate it). Don't buy magazines, check your local library membership, most come with access to an app for free magazines.

80smonster · 07/08/2024 14:19

Mortgage interest now, I used to waste it in expensive restaurants/hotel bars/designer clothes. Not any more.
