What stupid stuff do you waste money on?

For me it's candles, and clothes in Primark that I'll either never wear, or wear once and chuck in the charity bag. Or getting tipsy on a night out and ordering (and paying for) expensive shots for everyone. I often wonder how much money I'd have for my retirement if I didn't spend so much on crap. Anyone else do this?

Sports clothes. Hiking shoes. But it's my hobby and I guess I get wear out of them. I have a lot of stuff though.

Poor planet all that going to landfill.

FlorencenotRatchet · 07/08/2024 18:33

Vinted for me too.
I've just bought 3 pots of the new Liberty liquid eye patch. It's not on general sale yet so really I'm saving money as sure it will be ££££ when it is released.

Omg so did I. 😂 Which one did you order?

Jo Malone, Orange Blossom 🤦‍♀️😍

What about you?

@Polarnight

so you just asked to be a judgemental cow about it? Nasty.

She can have my 2.5 quota as I was unable to have any.

Donating 1.5 of my quota, crack on!

My biggest expense at the moment is vinted. I am off my feet and lazing around the house and get bored I have enough party dresses for a socialite, I do not even like going to parties.

I have to tear myself away from the reduced corner at the garden centre. But I feel so sorry for them all, and I want to take them all home, and cosset them, and bring them back to their full glory.............

@invisiblecat

thsts a lovely thing to do. You could always then sell them onto friend/neighbours etc for a bit extra (usual retail price) to make it more sustainable!

oldiching · 07/08/2024 18:47

I'm pretty good about this stuff now but in the past it would be books, magazines, skincare, clothes, cd's and dvd's and snack foods like can's of coke and chocolate bars when out. Now I take water with me and a protein bar or fruit and only really go to a café or restaurant if I am with someone else i.e. socialising or if I am having a planned "nice" day to myself and I'll set a budget for those.

I utilise free resources for things like magazines, books, music and films these days and invested in a good e-reader and i have a home server for music, films and audiobooks.

I do still buy skincare but I know what I like and have a budget for it. I do still get books and Vinyl but I usually ask for that at Christmas or birthdays and I don't buy a lot of clothing but if I really like something I will get it same with anything, if I really like it and I can use it I don't mind buying it.

I also like really good quality chocolate and tea which I buy and various consumables like art materials and ingredients for cooking and baking.

I try to practice Essentialism in terms of my spending and so I limit shopping and spending on impulse buys and things I don't really want so I always have the money for the things that I really do enjoy and use.

Chanel L'EAU. I’ve been looking at Orange Blossom though.

Deserthog · 07/08/2024 18:49

I don’t really. I buy things I need and that’s about it. I suppose you could say “treat” food ?

Nice foods I like/prefer but dont necessarily need ?

okydokethen · 07/08/2024 18:55

I spend so much at costa each week it's shocking.
Amazon thinks I run a small business - it's all books and kids 'essentials' but there's always something.
We eat out more than we can afford.
I also can't go to Boots and spend less than £60

HamSad · 07/08/2024 19:01

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 07/08/2024 17:11

Folio Society books. I just love them. Some months I spend all my disposable income on them.

I don't blame you; they're gorgeous

I keep getting the ‘you qualify for business rates’ email too 😳

RomeoRivers · 07/08/2024 19:07

I also get caught out by Charlotte Tilbury, she regularly offers free full sized items when you spend a set amount + 2 samples, so I often buy things I don’t need just to get the deal 🤦🏻‍♀️

Polarnight · 07/08/2024 15:31

Poor planet with 5 kids from one person. What if everyone did that

Jellybeans?

Bellablahhole · 07/08/2024 19:13

Papercraft supplies. Beautiful papers and card, plus dies etc. I do use them and I enjoy my hobby, but I really need to stop buying more!

Nice - love Chanel!

Orange Blossom is lovely…light and fresh, a great ‘summer’s day’ scent 🍊

deeahgwitch · 07/08/2024 19:36

Lipsticks
Eye pencils
Bronzer
Mascara

I'm still trying to to find the Holy Grail 🙄

TheMithrasDirective · 07/08/2024 19:40

On the small side of things, mugs. I love a good mug.

More expensively, cashmere. And wool, but mainly cashmere. I've dropped thousands on it in the last few years. I flip flop on the "waste" issue because on the one hand, I spend so much and I literally don't need any more, but on the other hand, I love them and genuinely get so much pleasure from wearing them in the autumn and winter. It's rare for me to regret a purchase or not wear it. So maybe it is worth it to me. A cold day, a beautiful thick cashmere sweater and some cosy pyjama bottoms with a mug of coffee and a good film is my heaven.

I don’t dare stop. This is what happens if they don’t get fed on time. But they do bring me gifts tbf.

Ha ha, brilliant!
But I'm so intrigued... What do they bring you?

TankFlyBoss · 07/08/2024 19:44

@NeedthatFridayfeeling

I love your nails. What brand are the wraps from please, if you don't mind sharing?

MissingMoominMamma · 07/08/2024 19:48

Raffle type competitions. Omaze & Aspire specifically.

Probably to the tune of around £15-20 pm.

Boredlass · 07/08/2024 19:48

Subscriptions but I can afford it. I buy a lot of tech as well. If I want it, I’ll get it. It’s never a waste.

JellyWellyBoots · 07/08/2024 20:00

@CointreauVersial I was about to write this but you beat me to it. I don't know how to stop 😂

I will do the sensible thing then and try it before I buy it. 😅

SaintHonoria · 07/08/2024 15:06

Lipsticks.

I had 2,500 and rising but have reduced it to around 1,800.

I have a make up and beauty room so storage is not an issue but lipstick buying is an addiction.

In the name of all that is Charlotte Tilbury, what have I just read?. You win. For sure.

Wowsers. ShockShockShock

I’ve had a small Weber bbq plaque thing, a small stainless steel cat bowl (best one, I used it for the dog and now our cat!), but mostly flattened aluminium candle holders which they have picked holes in. Everything left in the exact same spot on our lawn.
And sometimes petals (I’ve seen them pick them from our own garden).
