What stupid stuff do you waste money on?

SammyTheDog · 07/08/2024 12:18

For me it's candles, and clothes in Primark that I'll either never wear, or wear once and chuck in the charity bag. Or getting tipsy on a night out and ordering (and paying for) expensive shots for everyone. I often wonder how much money I'd have for my retirement if I didn't spend so much on crap. Anyone else do this?

Not sure if i do, but to someone else it might seem like wasting money though, for example i buy lots of nail wraps, much cheaper than the salon and it makes me happy having nice nails.
When we go to a certain place i always buy us a gingerbread penguin, it's become a bit of a tradition now and my 7yr old loves it.

How do these work and are they difficult?

Takeaway coffees

Same! Occasionally an over priced muffin for the cafe too, even though I know I can easily make a coffee at home and that muffins are cheaper from the supermarket 🫣🫣 living in London that’s about £7-£8 on one coffee and muffin!! Awful!

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 07/08/2024 16:03

@hollyblueivy They are made from nail polish and have an adhesive back, they come in a pack of 16 so you can match them to your nail size, they can also be trimmed at the side to fit or stretched a little. Need clean nails, ideally clean with nail polish remover before applying the wrap to make sure no oils etc, just peel the wrap from the backing paper, lay on nail and when happy with placement press down, make sure no wrap is on the skin or water can get under. I use a base coat to protect my nails as they are weak then a top coat, i change them every week but could easily get 2 weeks from a set. My mum and a friend tried them but unfortunately their nail chemistry didn't like the wraps and they fell off, but I've never had an issue, these are my last 3 sets

Game of thrones winter is coming browser game....and nice smelling cleaning products.

hollyblueivy · 07/08/2024 16:08

@NeedthatFridayfeeling

Thanks they looks great. Can't believe I've never come across these before. Will give them a go.

To the topic, I waste money going to the supermarket when I don't need to.

Rattenbury · 07/08/2024 16:10

Blankets. I'm even on a blanket buying ban at the moment as I have so many of them.

Movinghouseatlast · 07/08/2024 16:10

Plants for the garden and solar lights. The plants get eaten by slugs and the solar lights fail a day or so after the guarantee runs out.

I think I've wasted about £150 on plants this year. Last year about £400!

Lipsticks.

I had 2,500 and rising but have reduced it to around 1,800.

I have a make up and beauty room so storage is not an issue but lipstick buying is an addiction.

I don’t own a single lipstick 😳.
For me it’s scented candles and expensive skincare.

Vinted!!

Me too! I discovered Vinted towards the end of my diet so suddenly I've gone from a size 24 to a size 10.....and there was Vinted!
Fatal! (But I'm having so much fun😁).

Also houseplants. I can't resist picking one up if it's going cheap. But I don't consider any of it stupid stuff....if it makes you happy then it's worth it, surely?

Probably the one that other people would deem most stupid is phone games. I don't spend a lot. £20 per month max. The way I see it, is that the games give me the entertainment value of £5 per week so I really don't have an issue with it.

I've reigned in most of my pointless spending over the years. Used to be the case that if I went somewhere I always wanted to buy "something" often for the sake of it. I don't really do that now. Coffees out was another, I've spent £££ on those. But I bought myself a really good coffee machine which overall has saved me a lot. I'm much less inclined now to spend £3+ on a coffee out when I know I can make the same for pence at home.

Wow I had no idea people spent money on phone games.. Is it to rent the game or extra ammo or something? I had a candy crush habit for years and although I never spent money on it, I can totally see how addictive these things are.

Mine would be vinted dresses. 🙈

CoastalCalm · 07/08/2024 16:18

10 years ago it would have been going out and taxis and being over generous

now very little as focussed on savings so still buy quality but less quantity

tuvamoodyson · 07/08/2024 16:24

Books from charity shops! I keep telling myself not to buy any more but I always do! However, my local charity shop sell them for 50p, sometime 4 for £1! I read them then take them back though..

Onehappymam · 07/08/2024 16:24

I’m hopeless at managing our food. When I do a food shop far too much ends up going to waste. We end up eating out or getting a takeaway because I can’t face cooking. I just find the whole thing overwhelming and stressful. I never had this problem before we had kids.

Peonies12 · 07/08/2024 14:17

Books from charity shops. but otherwise, working from home in a small town has its perks, I very rarely ever go to big shops (also hate it). Don't buy magazines, check your local library membership, most come with access to an app for free magazines.

I have had the Libby app for ages - use it for eBooks. Never noticed it had magazines! Thank-you!! (Feeling slightly stupid now...)

I'm impressed! I have one lipstick. I never wear it, but I keep it 'just in case' 👄

invisiblecat · 07/08/2024 16:48

Fancy soaps in pretty packaging from TK Maxx.

Cat toys - which are invariably treated with disdain and ignored by the recipients.

mondaytosunday · 07/08/2024 16:56

Online games.

That would be an insufferable way to live.

You never ever have anything nice in life, you just spend on the necessities that you NEED.

Most things we have in life we don't 'need'. To exist by 'needs' only is some true Mumsnet Martyrdom right there.

That's really bitchy. How do you know that poster isn't living in poverty with no spare money at all? It's not martyrdom to ensure you can pay your utilities etc

Plant pots🙈 rarely in needed size

Same here with bonsai pots.

Frith2013 · 07/08/2024 17:04

Nothing, except a pot of tea in any cafe is somehow much more exciting than a pot of tea taken at home.

I'll often break up a long walk with a pot of tea somewhere. I could take it in my flask but it's just not the same.

MissyB1 · 07/08/2024 17:05

Hair products - that usualyy turn out to be crap. Haircuts - every six weeks at £50 a time eeek!!

invisiblecat · 07/08/2024 17:07

I have to tear myself away from the reduced corner at the garden centre. But I feel so sorry for them all, and I want to take them all home, and cosset them, and bring them back to their full glory.............

PigeonFeatherInMyChair · 07/08/2024 17:07

Fountain pens and inks.

Far too many!

Wheredidileavemycarkeys · 07/08/2024 17:09

At the moment iced lattes
I probably don’t need two one every day
