What stupid stuff do you waste money on?

For me it's candles, and clothes in Primark that I'll either never wear, or wear once and chuck in the charity bag. Or getting tipsy on a night out and ordering (and paying for) expensive shots for everyone. I often wonder how much money I'd have for my retirement if I didn't spend so much on crap. Anyone else do this?

Books and DVDs ( yes still in the dark ages lol) although buy most from charity shops, and sometimes I buy things I think look useful and then turn out to be a pile of shite, 🙄

I realized I never answered the question but my weakness for spending unnecessary money is vintage clothes. Although I suppose thats what classed as 'vintage' from my teens 25 years ago which is technically more like retro now.

I wouldn't say I spend a lot of money on each item (many under £5 but the more expensive/collectable items like vintage leather items maybe more like £35) and it obviously not an everyday thing but over the last 20 years I have collected quite a lot. Thing is it only gets 'more' vintage which means it holds its value well as long as its not damage.

I pick them up from charity shops, ebay, older family members, DH will also buy stuff as gifts for my birthdays etc...

If something gives you joy - a shot with a mate or the thought of a new book - it's not a waste x

Anonymous54 · 08/08/2024 20:20

Books and v pricey Artisan crisps!

PracticalLady · 08/08/2024 20:24

I used to work near an outlet centre and went there at least once a week at lunchtime. I've now got 30 to 40 unworn bras, numerous pairs of knickers and lots of new pjs sitting in drawers waiting for their turn to be worn. I will have to live to be ancient to get through them, but if I ever end up in hospital long-term, I'm set up!

AhBiscuits · 08/08/2024 21:18

I buy myself little treats I don't need all the time. My job is pure stress and having enough money that I can buy things that take my fancy makes it sting a bit less.
Recently bought some cute short pyjamas and a cast iron loaf pan for my new sourdough baking hobby.

Orangeandpinknails · 08/08/2024 21:23

Yes OP I am the same... with the same things too...I also used to pay for VIP booths in clubs when I was in my 20s and order moet at 1am because I thought "yolo" after 10 JD's ..oh dear, I don't know who I though I was haha

cats231 · 08/08/2024 21:48

mixedpeel · 08/08/2024 21:53

@DymaxionQuit lit’

This is genius. I feel a blog coming on. Book reviews along with scores for how likely each one is to send you back to the bottle…

No my mother was a spender and hoarder that ended in a divorce from my step dad.

I’m sorry to hear that - thank you for answering.
i only asked as it is such a disciplined way to live that I thought it must have a history.
I am so far from disciplined - I waste a lot of money, on small, unaccountable stuff and I’d love to change.

Loonaandalf · 08/08/2024 23:08

I would say DH and I are pretty frugal with most things BUT takeaways and eating out is our downfall, we do that at least 4 times a week, not including lunch out at work.

Up until recently we lived really central so didn’t need a car, DH started driving a few months ago and that’s a big waste of money but tbf it really is handy for where we live now.

Aproductofmyera80s · 08/08/2024 23:20

Not so much stupid, actually practical but have far too many. Shower gels and socks. If I see new ones of either I have to buy. It’s ridiculous how many I have. 😂

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 08/08/2024 23:56

Hair products. I have curly hair and I am constantly looking for the perfect regime.

Gingernan · 09/08/2024 03:21

I've just thought of what might have been a massive waste of money. I had to have a tooth out last year. The gap isn't glaringly obvious but I'm a bit vain about teeth ( teeth-ist!) so I had a denture made. I hate it,it feels so wierd and I haven't felt confident enough to wear it out. I will give it another try but I'm mad at myself, money is tight.

Rhaenys · 09/08/2024 06:09

I’ve had to rein it in, but candles for me too. I mean they all got used and weren’t just piling up everywhere, but I was spending £20+ a month on them which seemed ridiculous.

Citrusandginger · 09/08/2024 08:41

I'm quite relieved to learn that I'm not alone in buying candles that are too good to burn.

jasminocereusbritannicus · 09/08/2024 10:19

I spend money on buying things that kids in school might like to use…eg stamper pens, fidget toys, pads of pretty paper, and, most of all, stickers! As do most of the other TAs…Teachers spend even more!!! Very rarely do we ask for our money back.

I know, I know…😏

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 09/08/2024 10:24

I must also admit I have too many pairs of converse, I just love them. I keep them all in their boxes.

I have my eye on another pair 🙊

DoopSnoggySnogg · 07/08/2024 14:02

Can’t go so much as pop into Boots for paracetamol without buying unnecessary hair, beauty and skincare products.

Me too - you are not alone in that habit.

SprinkleOfSunak · 10/08/2024 08:34

@Snowflake2

Thanks for the idea of having display shelves, I’d not thought of that and just have all of these items in large boxes and a large bag and go and look at them from time to time.

I’m also like you with clothes too, and always have been. For me, this kind of ‘collecting’ is a learned behaviour from 2 people in my family who are hoarders/serial collectors.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 07/08/2024 17:11

Folio Society books. I just love them. Some months I spend all my disposable income on them.

I fully understand this. They are beautiful 😍

Elly46 · 10/08/2024 13:06

M&S food. I use other food stores too but have been spoiled by shopping in there too much.

Boxofstars · 21/10/2024 00:23

When i had my lovely late tuxedo girl Tiggy i bought loads of Ancol collars.

She went out on the garden and came back in with the collar missing.

Naughty girl rubbed her neck on a tree until it came off i and my next door neighbour found them on our gardens under a tree.

Books.
Knitting yarn (it's stuffed in every conceivable hiding place so my family don't find out what a Yarn Freak I am).
Nice clothes made from natural fibres.
Euromillions tickets - one a week ( two, if Tuesday's jackpot is massive). I definitely get more than £2.50 worth of enjoyment looking at the beautiful houses and gorgeous stuff I could buy with my winnings. (It does occasionally cross my mind to think of charitable donations/helping family, but then I think 'Oooh, I could have a tiara!' and forget all about being benevolent and generous.)

Are you me?😂

ifIwerenotanandroid · 21/10/2024 14:18

I mean, if you are, you're also hiding the fabric, haberdashery, reusable big shopping bags with nice designs on them, vintage necklaces, comfy gel pens...

And you're dreaming about spending a tiny part of this week's £51million on a gothic/medieval place in the southwest. Oh, & a French chateau with the best library I've/you've ever seen.
