Josh Kerr - wanker or wonder?

Not long to go for the men's 1500m Olympic final. Kerr is not short of self-confidence.

I thought he seemed like a bit of a wankr but actually there is nothing wrong with self belief

Really enjoying the stupid comments from armchair experts who couldn’t run a tap!

🤣🤣👏

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/08/2024 21:02

Not heard of him but I guess self-confidence is vital or you’d just give up and go home 🤷‍♀️

Well done him! What a great race! That was so exciting.

I think all these young athletes speak so well and actually have something to say. I love their confidence. It's a refreshing change from platitudes.

Tbh they have already all delivered. They've qualified to take part in the most elite of competitions.

BiscuityBoyle · 06/08/2024 21:09

I liked Hocker and glad he won.

There aren't two choices, either "I'm happy to be here" or "I'm the best runner in the world at the moment and I will win."

I'd rather someone went with the latter than have no self belief.

Keely Hodgkinson doesn't lack self belief either but I haven't seen any criticism of her pre race film.

Cherrysoup · 06/08/2024 21:10

Did he win? Stunningly arrogant! (Self confident/cocky/whatever)

Pebbles16 · 06/08/2024 21:15

NigelHarmansNewWife · 06/08/2024 19:55

I think you're right. He puts his shades on and he's Sasha Fierce kind of thing.

Absolutely. Who knows what personas celebrities/sportsmen put on to "make things happen".
I think you have to have your brain wired in a certain type of way to be a sports person. Often that will come across as arrogance, but if you don't believe in yourself, who is going to believe in you?

Ingebritsen and Kerr made it easy for everyone else to go under the radar. Amazing from both Americans.

Ingebritsen got his tactics badly wrong and Kerr was pretty much forced to go with him.

It was a national record for Kerr - he hardly dropped off willingly at the end!

This. 1500m is all about the tactics. Ingebritsen screwed his up massively & got what he deserved from the race. Kerr concentrated too much on beating Ingebritsen, which he succeeded in doing. But they both took their eye off the American runner, dragged him round at a very fast pace then left a gap on the inside for him to nip past them. He got his tactics spot on, which is why he is the Olympic champion, and neither of the two big favourites are.

In fairness to Kerr, he took it on the chin & seemed genuinely happy with silver. I don’t mind a bit of self-confidence in a top sportsman. It never did Ronaldo any harm.

outdamnedspots · 06/08/2024 21:24

If you know nothing about athletics and you don't know about the rivalry between Kerr and Ingebritsen, then there's really no point commenting here!!

Athletics needs rivalries between runners to keep things exciting, and that's what Jacob and Josh have been doing for years.

TizerorFizz · 06/08/2024 21:25

Very many top sports people are utterly self centred. Of course they need to be. No one gets to the top by not looking after no 1. They must have self belief. I’m always cross when soortspeople are feted for taking part and being the “plucky Brit” like Eddie the Eagle. Just don’t want to see that ever again. They are now funded to be competitive and many are.

He is a class athlete. Had us all up and shouting. The effort and training and pressure is phenomenal and I love the honesty in wanting gold. Amazing time and race.

Yep. A NR!!

Never heard of him until 10 mins ago and now I’d prefer us to lose a medal than for him to take this gold 🤢 What an ego!

Don't be so daft. Top athletes need confidence. Having a rivalry brings interest to the race.

Amazed that Ingebritson has gone out are at the front

wonder if one if the Kenyans can pull off a shock?

Why? He often does that.

Kerr gave up when the American kicked forward

No he didn't! He got a NR!

Totally agree, a brutal race

The antics are only showmanship but he must be feeling like a right donut now.

Not as bad as Jakob feels...

Both of them are insufferable. I said to DH before the race that I hope neither of them get gold as they are so bloody arrogant. He said that's not going to happen.

😂😂😂🙄

Toooldforthis36 · 06/08/2024 21:30

Quite glad both him and the Norwegian got caught out actually. Quite unattractive arrogance from both. Doesn’t come across as confidence.

Izzynohopanda · 06/08/2024 21:30

Earlier, was checking when the race was on, and they talked about the Ingrlbrursen/Kerr rivalry. I almost felt this race was as big as the 100m as a consequence. Ing nonchalant heat helped to fuel the speculation as he almost walked the first part and then easily qualified

L0bstersLass · 06/08/2024 20:35

I'm loving this confidence oozing out of British athletes of late.He gave a balanced interview afterwards to the BBC, I like him.
Keely Hodgkinson had an equally bullish filmroll before her race last night and she got the gold with some style.
It's good to see people being open about their intentions, nothing wrong with being ambitious.

Exactly! Why are some people so keen to knock others down?

sunglassesonthetable · 06/08/2024 21:31

Ingebritsen spoke really well afterwards. He messed up. He said it.

outdamnedspots · 06/08/2024 21:32

@Eldrick47s - Ingebritsen is stronger at longer distances, Tbf
