somebody asked for this on the last thread after I said that the JCVI weren’t going to be recommending vaccinating frontline staff in care homes and hospitals. You might want to double check if you do get one this year @itsgettingweird.

I work in a school. I come under education.

We were very lucky to get one in the first wave as we argued health and social care (special Ed) - I'd already had it by then anyway 🫣.

I should get one in autumn/ winter as ds carer alongside flu jab.

Ironically I always get called up before him 🤔😂

Those that see it as a positive will pretend it will push up wages for care workers (who I agree are very poorly paid).

Trouble is that I don't think local authorities have the cash to spend more on care homes - they'll either need more £ from central funding or they'll need to raise funds more directly.

So it might raise wages in the longer term (might working very hard there) but it will cause absolute misery in the short term.

Still I imagine a few are hoping more women given up work to fill the gaps in caring. And then complain about the numbers of people claiming carers allowance.

bombastix · 12/08/2024 18:58

But that was the good old days! You know, when women did all the caring and you could run a home on one salary.

I wonder how many women really join the dots on the extreme right wing stuff; to me it always looks like an invite back to being pregnant and barefoot.

This is seriously getting out of control now - and dangerous.

But I agree with the guy a few tweets down (Jake iirc) who said the clue should be the media image as his photos - but most people are too thick to realise this.

Yes, it gives me the same impression (see also MAGA).

The EU sent a warning Musk about his interview with the orange one

https://x.com/allenanalysis/status/1823057692409409961

BREAKING: The European Union has issued a formal letter to Elon Musk, demanding that he censor Donald Trump in their upcoming interview.

The EU warns of "legal obligations" if Musk does not take action to prevent the spread of "disinformation."

Musk can't be extradited. First amendment etc

bombastix · 12/08/2024 20:07

Yes I wonder what the EU means? Musk won’t care, even if costs him money.

I think the hellscape that is elderly social care is an area that all parties just turn a blind eye to. The electorate don't want to think about being old and ill and there are no short-term wins. Carers are undervalued and underpaid and it is a very unattractive role to many for a lot of reasons.
DP works in a related area. Placements and home care are difficult & sometimes impossible to source. LAs cant afford to pay more than the bare mininum and those who do not qualify for financial support from the council are also limited. All this has a direct impact on the nhs as discharges are delayed as scarce care with little or no choice for the service user must be found. Longterm solutions cost money & whilst this is what i want, paying for it via taxation is unpalatable to most/many so the current highly dysfunctional system continues on. Thinking back to the even worse situation during the height of covid makes me shudder. It is disingenuous to suggest that realistic improvements will be seen without substantive investment. Apologies - this has turned into a rambling essay.
Best wishes to @medianewbie and @itsgettingweird

Good on them but I agree he won't give a shit.

He posted some shity meme about the justice system in the uk a few days ago.

He's a really dangerous man who could afford a huge platform for his ego trip.

Notonthestairs · 12/08/2024 20:15

Not rambling at all @Owlbookend I fully agree.

Jason118 · 12/08/2024 21:06

Social care is just underfunded, full stop. Carers not paid enough and LA's not given enough funding. Add to the mix difficult buggers like me who refuse to pay more than father's state pension to the council (out of his principles), means there isn't enough money. It needs central funding top ups to cover LA shortfall, see also Scotland.

Saucery · 12/08/2024 21:11

That’s why I’d like 1p in the pound NI for everyone, ringfenced for social care.

bombastix · 12/08/2024 21:16

I just think the current incentive is to do very little. What incentive do Labour have to change the current system? They might increase the minimum wage. They might provide some more council funded care, but where does the money come from?

The nasty truth is that housing is going to continue to be sold to pay for care. The choice is otherwise for families (ie women) to take on this role. That is even more unaffordable immediately so I think it will roll on, unresolved.

I don't know what you mean here.

mushypeasontoast · 12/08/2024 21:48

I work in a sector that supports some care homes with securing agency staff to cover where needed.
In my experience, the majority of these low paid workers are not British passport holders.
In my experience without these workers, the care industry will be screwed.
In my experience, councils can barely afford the costs, in some cases the providers are making pennies to ensure carers are in place (special, short term circumstances).

Jason118 · 12/08/2024 22:12

@mushypeasontoast all of what you say is my experience also.
