It’s justice, not revenge: top prosecutor warns rioters could get ten years

The current DPP on Times Radio this morning commenting that the later sentencing will likely be longer sentences. In 2011 the riots were mostly against property and looting, burglary and theft were the charges. This time the attacks were on people, the police and hostels with people inside. If they are charged with trying to burn down the hostels this will be attempted murder.

Good!

Awfulness aside, I can't even see their reasoning. Make 'illegals' really really angry and traumatised so that they definitely have a higher chance of turning to violence or terror? Make it make sense.

I hope the Tory councillor's wife gets a hefty sentence. She basically told people to burn down hotels and she 'didn't care'. What a callous bitch.

medianewbie · 11/08/2024 13:04

Thank you to everybody for your kind words x Our family's experiences this summer feel 'bookended' by politics - Ds got ill just before the Election (seems ages ago!) & I think realisation that Uni is 'off' this year / long slow climb back to health is around the riots time. All throughout he's been talking about politics & Cybersecurity (his subject). He is such a bright lad, the thought of him being stuck at home till next summer makes me want to cry. Which of course I mustn't show him.
MN has been enormously helpful.

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/08/2024 13:07

Ah @medianewbie, such a worrying time for you and your family. I wish you strength getting through it.💞

BustingBaoBun · 11/08/2024 13:42

medianewbie So Sorry to hear about your DS and how difficult it must be. What a worry.

It pays to pay attention.I imagine not many people got the message when the T word was mentioned.

They will when they come for them.

mibbelucieachwell · 11/08/2024 14:20

I'm very sorry to hear your DS is still unwell @medianewbie . I hope the medics get to the bottom of it and find a treatment plan very soon.

And get better soon @dontcallmelen

Me either & Yy that awful I believe a childminder woman hope she gets the full weight of the law thrown at her.

L1ttledrummergirl · 11/08/2024 16:22

@medianewbie I'm sorry about your ds being so unwell. Hopefully they can get to the bottom of it soon.

Don't worry about him not starting university this year. He can focus on his recovery without the external pressure, and go next year. University will still be there, and in the meantime he focus on himself, and read around his subject so he's even more prepared for when he starts.

Many dc take a gap year for a variety of reasons, he won't be alone.

Willowkins · 11/08/2024 17:09

Didn't the tory councillor' wife add something to the end of her diatribe, something along the lines of: burn down the Government too?

medianewbie · 11/08/2024 20:16

Ds deferred & had a gap year last year. So, he was ready to go this year. When we called the Uni last week to ask how close we could cut it (& advised why) they were sniffy. Its awful bloody luck.

Apolloneuro · 11/08/2024 21:21

I've been thinking about your son today @medianewbie as I had a jaunt in an ambulance to hospital with my heart rate being naughty - turns out I’ve got a nasty dose of Covid. Please don’t fret about him deferring uni. It’ll be ok.

Zonder · 11/08/2024 22:53

Oh dear, hoping for speedy recovery for your ds @medianewbie and for you @Apolloneuro

Hope you recover soon. I have Covid too although not too awful this time. I was in hospital with it two years ago. Always likes to strike my summers.

itsgettingweird · 12/08/2024 07:38

Oh no Apollo and piggy. Hope you both recover soon. I've heard this new strain isn't nice and hangs around?

I've just been diagnosed with suspected cluster headaches. At the end of June/ start of July my eye kept suddenly watering and being really painful and my nose would start running on that side of- felt like it had opened up iyswim? Would come and go for a few days at a time. Mostly at night.

Then it started every night at same time. Waking me up. Finally after the most stupid system ever which pretty much means you can't get an appointment I used the 111 feature and got a call back within an hour. 3 hours later a dr from my surgery rings and says "cluster headaches". Gave me amatriptyline. First 2 nights took 1 tablet (as says 1-2) and although no waking feeling like someone is stabbing my eyeball with hits pins I still got woken with a feeling of a bruised eyeball. Last night I took 2.

Had a good night with no pain! 🤞 this is what they are. Although that then means it could be months if treatment and then trying to stop it to see if they've gone away or not! (I'm very worried about getting an appointment for more meds and to discuss this!)

Zonder · 12/08/2024 07:41

Slightly OT but I keep getting notifications that a new post has appeared in the GE topic section but when I go and look there's never a new topic there. Anyone else have this? It's the only topic I have notifications set for.

I did wonder if it might be that someone posts a really horrible thread and it gets deleted - I did once get the notification and it was something like that.

Piggywaspushed · 12/08/2024 07:46

There's' been spam overnight. illuminati On several boards.

Ah that must be it then. Thanks @Piggywaspushed

Cluster headaches sound horrendous. Nobody should have to be concerned about how to get GP appointments - that is an extra layer of worry you dont need when you are ill.
DD and I had Covid three weeks ago - having both had it last September. It certainly wiped us both out.

Mine went from thinking I needed to see a GP to ringing for routine apts and not getting one - to it getting really bad and nightly and not being able to shift headache to trying to get a emergency on the day. Couldn't do that for 2 weeks. To then be told I couldn't have an emergency apt as it had been going on for a few weeks - oh and you can get a routine one. But yes, you won't get a routine one because e consult closes as soon as full and apts go as soon as first people get through - and I get in the queue that fits you off because it's full.
After a conversation with receptionist about how the hell then I can see a GP she said use the online 111 system. I did. Call back within the hour. Triaged. Told I needed to speak to a Gp at my surgery - rung my surgery. Phone call within 2 hours, asks why I'd battled through this for 6 weeks Hmm - diagnosis and medication.

I'm wondering if it's made so difficult so only people who actually need to see a GP bother to keep trying! But the reality is you have people like me so battle on when they probably shouldn't because they can't just take time off from everyday life to spend 4/5 hours trying to speak to a GP.
