Just been talking to my neighbour. He and his family are Nigerian. They haven't been here that long. Both work. They have small dcs.
He's had to take today off work as he works in a town that's been targeted and he's scared to travel.

I'm in tears I'm so angry. Those bastards wouldn't know how to fucking spell work. Luckily I got inside before I broke down. Dh is also teary. They're the loveliest family. I'm genuinely scared for my African neighbours. There's a lot of families moved here from the south because of a housing shortage. All of them that I've met are decent lovely people. Wish I could say the same for a lot of people who are from here.

We're broken aren't we? What the fuck is to be done?

I've just moved to Hull with my three children after having to move locality due to my abusive ex. I'm mixed race and the children are lighter than me. It's very upsetting that we've only been here for a few weeks and I'm having to consider our movements. It was my daughter's birthday today and myself and my 12yr old had to go into the city to get her a few things yesterday. I couldn't believe it when my son said that he was scared to go. Like he hasn't been through enough.

That's what I keep thinking regarding the hotels housing refugees - those poor people have been through so much, and are currently in what I'd consider depressing circumstances holed up in a hotel room, just for these clueless tossers to try and burn them to the ground.

I will say though that everywhere I have managed to go, the people of Hull are as friendly and warm as I've always known them to be. I pray that these pathetic, ignorant losers are in the minority. People blame Farage for a lot and yes, of course he disgusts me, but I blame the Tories for this mostly. To stay in power they created project fear and division.

Another sad angle is that my son has been considering career options of late and we thought the police force would be a good choice for him. I have major concerns with the police, as I'm sure many people of colour do, but I know that it would suit his protective side. However, watching the police deal with this is heartbreaking. Their families must be so worried about them heading out to work.

I do hope that they find the majority of these people. The police look a bit powerless. I think Starmer will be tough on the rioters though when their days in court come.

We are booked for a few days in London next week. I'm so apprehensive and unsure whether to cancel it. Thank you for starting this topic op. You sound so kind and wonderful. It's also am eye-opener that others are unfortunately feeling the fear that I am. Let's hope it starts coming to an end.

I'm sorry it's so stressful. Please don't cancel London, we are a mixed race family living in London and it's all fine down here. Our street have been checking in on and baking for our Muslim neighbours .. London has a lot of problems but celebrating diversity isn't on the whole one of them xx

stronglatte · 06/08/2024 07:17

Where is Starmer in all this ? All these families frightened and terrorised and he's hiding behind meetings .

SallyWD · 06/08/2024 07:17

Badgertime · 06/08/2024 01:45

Do we think this will continue over the next week?

I couldn't find any information on further protests. Just hoping they don't hit our smaller towns.

Yes there are loads of protests opanned for Saturday and I think some on Wednesday. Fortunately there are counter (anti-racism) protests being planned. These usually outnumber the far right protests.

SallyWD · 06/08/2024 07:20

SoreAndTired1 · 06/08/2024 00:05

This is the really sad thing about these riots. Innocent people are prevented from going about their business by these protesters, it's so wrong. They are selfishly harming others.

And what's even worse is that the fear will remain. Long after the riots gave stopped, people of colour will live in fear, not knowing who to trust.

SallyWD · 06/08/2024 07:28

Every morning I wake up, read the news and I'm in tears. I can't believe what's happening to this country. It's not just the isolated incidents but the fact so many are consumed with hate, that they really believe their problems are down to brown skinned people and are justified in terrorising them.
It's the summer holidays and we know Muslim families who are scared to leave the house. Living like prisoners through no fault of their own.
I feel sick and keep crying and I'm white.

I am thinking of cancelling our U.K. holiday

They are popping up all over the place and a lot of them are being planned fairly last minute so it’s hard to say. So far I’ve found out via social media. If you can get a refund I’d cancel tbh.

H0P · 06/08/2024 07:49

What is really sad to me is that I have travelled in places like India and Syria and the people are so very welcoming and kind to foreign people, how shocked they must be when they come here and receive this awful welcome

Centre parcs, I was thinking it would be quite safe there, but now starting to panic..

Gladtobeout · 06/08/2024 00:06

Was the 60s the start of the 2.5 children figure?

So 56mil / 2 = 28mil (2 parents)

28mil x 2.5 = 70mil

That's only 1 generations growth! There should be an average of 3 generations since the 60s.

So 60s = 56mil
80s = 70mil
00s = 87.5mil
20s = 109.4mil

So population growth has slowed.

You don't seem to have a very good grasp of data for a data manager, do you?

Side note:
Hasn't emigration been greater than immigration over the last few decades?

Key thing missing from the equation is life span. People are living significantly longer than in the 60s (average life expectancy risen from ~71 to ~82 between 1964 and now) and proportion of the population over 65 is massive compared to the 60’s (I believe it amounts to around 9.5 million people).

BIWI · 06/08/2024 08:40

@sunflowrsngunpowdr

I'm guessing you must be quite young?

By labelling all of these people as racists the left have created a 'far right' that didn't exist 10 years ago. 10 years ago they were just people asking legit questions and now they have been inoculated to the name calling and are starting to own the far right label.

The far right was very present during the 70s. (And I'm sure in earlier decades). There's always been a horrible, racist element in Britain. It had seemed to have improve through the 80s and 90s - but Brexit opened that nasty sore right up again, and made it seem acceptable to spout racist views about immigrants and people of colour.

The last few years of the Tory government talking about asylum seekers as 'illegal immigrants' (which is totally false) as well as making it impossible for those seeking asylum from countries other than Afghanistan, Ukraine and Hong Kong to do so via legal routes, has only made this worse.

It's not a refusal to debate the issues - most of those rioting wouldn't even be able to articulate the issues, I think - it's just downright racism and thuggery that's always been the dark underbelly of British society.

If anything, therefore, it's the right that has created this/exacerbated this, not the left.

Where is Starmer in all this ? All these families frightened and terrorised and he's hiding behind meetings .

What do you want him to do?! He's hardly going to don riot gear and join the police at the riots!

Those meetings that you strongly deride are key. He's travelled to specific areas to talk to local police forces and politicians. He's hosted a meeting of Cobra. He's set up a new policing initiative, by meeting with police leaders.

No doubt you'd love it if he was on holiday, wouldn't you, so you could have a further, ignorant go at him.

Reform voter, by any chance?

Yep, 17,000 members of the National Front in the early 70s.

I think it's extremely naive and inaccurate to suggest that Britain has just become racist in the last few days, or that people are only experiencing racism/xenophobia now.

Britain has been racist and xenophobic for a long time. And people have suffered racist abuse for a long time.

My dad was English. My mum was white, but from another European country.

They used to live in England together.

My mum told me that every week she was sneered and laughed at for not being English. She was told to "fuck off home" about once or twice a month . She was talked down to and made to feel like a second class citizen all the time

She said the last straw was this : my brother was in primary school and he had got something like a low mark on a test. My mother was talking to the English teacher at parent teachers meeting, and they spoke about the test.

The teacher said about my brother failing the test to my mother :

"sure what do you expect, he's half Polish" and laughed.
(not the country my mums from but I'm using ithe country as an example. And the teacher laughed into my mother's face After that

My mother told me she couldn't take the abuse and nastiness anymore, that was the last straw. and she left England and went back to her home country.

This broke up the marriage between my parents as well. Racism and xenophobia broke up my parents marriage.

It's very stupid to be racist and xenophobic when a lot of English people are married to non English people.

alrightluv · 06/08/2024 09:44

@ImikSiMik that's horrific.
