Why are majority of the riots in northern towns?

1000 replies

PhoebeMcPeePee · 04/08/2024 12:13

DH & I were watching the riots on the news this morning like most people absolutely horrified.

He's from one of the northern towns affected although we live in the south and started discussing why these riots now (and historically) tend to be more focused on northern towns but didn't really come up with any one thing. Any thoughts on this?

I’m in Liverpool and one of our libraries has been set on fire. People (citizens and Police) have been attacked. How is that in anyway protecting and fighting for children. And to use the murders and attempted murders of those beautiful little Children and their Teacher as a reason for this thuggery sickeningly disgusting. Perhaps with the money they’re not to to pensions for the WFA they can use it to build a few prisons and throw them (thugs)all in for at least 10 years. Make an example of them.
Also why are they shouting stop the boats. The murder of little Alice, Elsie Dot and Bebe was born in bred in the UK. It’s not nothing to do with any boats. I’m so heartbroken and angry right now.

Try walking through that protest if you are jewish?

The labelling has been going on for many years, before these riots. FFS anyone who voted Brexit was a racist!

There were lots if white and Jewish people in the protest....

LEEDS?!

Are you having a laugh.

You know BBC staff refused to move to Manchester because of the lack of cheese shops in the North. Seriously. Becuase they had these prejudiced ideas about the place but hadn't actually bothered to visits and look for these places nearby. Those who did eventually move up were surprised and many will now say their quality of life is better than it was in London...

Leeds isn't some backwater. Going on a business trip and not knowing the city doesn't meant here is a lack of places to eat which are not burgers. Thats a lack of knowing the city and where to go. Thats ignorance not a lack of diversity and Leeds being some kind of backwater!

I despair of posts like this, and they do sort of prove my point about the class war thats running in parallel with these issues tbh.

Thank god someone said this! As someone in a North East city I’ve honestly seen so much negative attitude towards us from southerners and things like this don’t help. The way southerners are dismissive of the north probably hasn’t helped - years of Tory rule certainly hasn’t.

Leeds station running out of proper coffee indeed… bloody hell 😂

ColinMyWifeBridgerton · 04/08/2024 16:12

It's men without any prospects and multiple governments have never addressed what this has bred - criminality. Racist politicians have exploited this too.

This post nails it. Poverty, combined with the belief that there is no chance at change.

Yes, Leeds, they have visited many times as another office there and therefore been recommended by local Leeds colleagues.

BULLSHIT

They need to start using tripadvisor and remove their head from their arse.

coxesorangepippin · 04/08/2024 16:12

Bit of an inflammatory op, especially given that they haven't been back to comment, but I'll bite.

Immigration hasn't been as successful up North as it may have been, let's say.

A lot of people from Southern counties haven't seen places like Burnley, Blackburn, Bolton, Bury, Keighley, etc so think it's all people living happily next to each other.

It's not.

Go to those ghettos in Lancashire/Yorkshire etc and you'll see why

Just a quote from someone who has never been to Leeds, and just goes off hearsay of someone she knows who couldn’t get the coffee they wanted in a station 🙄. I’m like you, know Leeds very well, and the poster’s comments are so far from the truth that they’re actually amusing.

They did check them out but when you live in London this is not variety as you know it, especially if you have grown up in very diverse part of North London. Running out of real coffee at a station would be unheard of in the south.

I am not accusing you of lying but I think your colleague was rather mistaken.
Within 5 minutes walk of Leeds Station there are Thai, Korean, Spanish, Italian, Mexican, Indian, Brazilian and Japanese Restaurants and those are the ones off the top of my head.
There is a Cafe Nero in the station so I would be bloody surprised if they ran out of coffee and had to resort to instant

They are thugs who are bored and its a laugh for them because they haven't got anything better and theres no consequences because they have nothing to lose.

Sadly.

Some dickhead goes 'lets go smash up some shit' or loot some buildings. It becomes a laugh and getting one over authority.

And this is exactly why they are rioting, because of comments like yours.

People are as entitled to vote Reform as you are to vote for whoever you voted for.

And she is absolutely entitled to say what she did. Reform and Nigel Farage are divisive and thrive on carefully concealed hatred and rage. They are abhorrent in their views and their behaviour.

Sadly come across many attitudes like them over the years. I’ve got a friend I met as a teenager who is down south. When she first ever came up north (comically dressed in far too many layers 😂) she was also shocked at how big and normal the cities were… I’ve also travelled the world and when I’ve met southerners come across attitudes from them being dismissive about the north. None of these people have ever set foot up north.

Permanentlymildlymiffed · 04/08/2024 16:16

gotmychristmasmiracle · 04/08/2024 12:28

Would imagine a lot of the refugees are housed up north, so they may see a lot more of what is going on and fundamentally just not feeling heard by the government.

This is certainly true for Sunderland and Hartlepool. And there have allegedly been a number of sexual assaults by immigrants housed in these areas as they’re mainly young men. The areas targeted by the EDL in these towns are the most deprived and as a generalisation least educated so these angry men on the fringes of society are easy picking for those wishing to brainwash them with their racist propaganda.

TinklySnail · 04/08/2024 16:17

There is (in my own opinion) one person to blame and that’s TR spouting hate and misinformation.
You can’t blame this on non existent EDL and people who voted Reform.
Farage has condemned the riots but obviously no one wants to acknowledge that because he is who he is.
I do believe that Islamophobia is to blame for the current events which is evident because the perpetrator wasn’t a Muslim yet a mosque was targeted.
The truth is that those in deprived areas are forgotten and dismissed. They don’t have a voice because they are labelled as racist, thick scumbags.
Britain’s priority should be British people but to say this out loud is classed as fascism and racism.

Domoda · 04/08/2024 16:18

Combination of factors - many lower income people don't feel politically represented during cost of living crisis by either the Tories or labour and anger and resentment towards the shit economic situation of the working class has been brewing for a long time. Due to that some were scooped up by Reform, Reform adding to the negative stereotypes re immigration and race and legitimising expression of racist views. Politically the powers that be are happy if the anger is directed at immigrants rather than them, as it does not rock the status quo of the wealthy, the actual exploiters of the working class.
There has always been racial tensions in working class towns - of which there are more in the north - just the same as in middle class towns (make no mistake, middle class towns are just as racist) but in middle class towns the veneer of respectability and satisfaction with ones lot keeps the racism 'hidden'.
That said, these thugs don't represent the average person. Most people in most Northern towns get on together regardless of race or religion and take pride in their towns being welcoming and safe places to live.

DS's lovely BF (from Surrey) asked if he could drink the water up here.
I said I didn't recommend it from our garden pond but if he stuck to the tap he should be ok.
He loves it up here now, especially Leeds and York

This is very very true

My white DS was working in Keighley, Bury and Bolton recently, in the 'ghetto' areas - it was not pleasant for him as a white person. Actual abuse for being white in those areas.

Obviously not allowed to talk about that. It's racist innit.

You are obviously lying. Cos Leeds is a shithole with only burgers cos someone's colleage said that.

The poster in question, can't say this themselves - so clearly hasn't been to Leeds and is going on second hand information.

And then has the nerve to tell people who have actually been to Leeds or maybe live there that they are totally wrong!

Image that level of arrogance and ignorance. And then wonder why there is a tension over feeling left behind by individuals in London who know nothing of the North...

... As i say, rather proving some of my point.

Theres a huge anti-establishment theme running through this. The establishment is seen as the police and London. And the middle class educated...

You do realise that the majority of the dicks rioting have probably never voted in their lives? A lot of them are uneducated and probably couldn’t tell you who the current PM is. So if they’re not voting Reform, clearly there are more moderate none violent people who are.

Yes, it is true but it was late at night so maybe that’s why. They were equally shocked as obviously Leeds is a big city.

It is a bit silly to suggest it isn’t what they experienced as it is, they is no way it can compete in diversity to London in particular but London wasn’t always like that!

And yes I do absolutely label you at best a bit thick and at worst racist if you listen to superficial and racist politics led by politicians who didn't even try to hide how dishonest and self-serving they were and vote for something that was consistently proven to be hugely damaging for the country on every level all in the interest of clearing out foreign people.
