Why is it a particular type of, usually men, who are normally the instigators of civil unrest?

It can’t be that they’re all just disillusioned or angry or even just thick. It largely seems to be working class men (and yes some women). When I passed the Tommy Robinson March last week when I was in London, it was a very similar demographic although I must admit it looked mainly quite calm.

I feel angry for the families of those poor girls, it’s beyond dreadful what happened to them but the rioters must know that they’re not helping them at all (or themselves).

So is it just racism? I saw some of the videos on X last night of black men and Muslims being singled out and attacked and can’t really think it’s down to anything else. The footage was shocking.

So you are saying all rioters are far right thugs?? Harehills anyone ????

theres been dozens of arrests for the harehills disorder if anyone bothered checking the news. the same as will be happening right now with the events of this week, police will have been working behind the scenes to identify those responsible.

ForYouManImADoomBoy · 04/08/2024 12:13

most crimes dont make the news so im not sure of your exact point? my point is, the save our women, save our kids bullshit they are spouting, they are only directing towards people who dont match their skin colour. they'll be the first in line for medical treatment from black and brown doctors and nurses when they have an accident or their granny gets sick but god forbid those same black and brown people want to live in the same community as them.

Well people can’t shout from the rooftops about something if they don’t know it happened can they?

lovelysunshine22 · 04/08/2024 11:58

@79Helene well thats a very well thought out answer 🙄

Sorry but I have better things to do with my day than come up with a "well thought out answer" for someone who can only post in shouty exclamation marks whose sole contribution seems to be making sweeping generalisations based on their own anecdote and not evidence.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 04/08/2024 12:16

I would just like to note that I was really struck yesterday by the high number of white working class men on the peaceful counter protest that I attended... they might have looked a bit like the rioting mob, but they clearly wanted to publicly emphasise the fact that they don't share those vile views.

Northernnature · 04/08/2024 12:18

Edingril · 04/08/2024 12:07

OK what in detail is their actual problem? Apart from raiding Gregg's and using 'immigrants same with Brexit when they are asked to give actual details of what they have issues with they can never come up with a coherent sentence let alone a full detailed argument

For me the issues are:
Illegal immigrants/asylum seekers from the most dangerous countries in the world committing random vicious attacks on the public and hushed up or memory holed (see Terence Carney in Hatrlepool, gay men in Reading, multiple other crimes hardly reported many against women, in recent weeks, soldier stabbed in Kent, man pushed under train by someone for looking at him funny. When illegal immigrants commit sex crimes like acid attack man they can't be deported. Govt no 1 priority is to protect the public of all races which they are massively failing at.
Worsening public services partly as too many people.
Too many people on out of work benefits who should be working - on course to bankrupt the country.
Crime out of control. Need to build prisons.
General increased violence and disrespect in society particularly towards women.
Housing terrible.
Govt priorities totally wrong in all areas - I compare to the 90s when uk was racially harmonious with good public services and optimism. Successive govts have wrecked this.

they do know though. they know which of their mates are creeps, which ones of them beat their wives and kids and what do they do about it? nothing, same as always. you know what i was told last year by my male white friends about what happened? 'yeah forget about it, he was probably just drunk and fancied you, you should take it as a compliment'

Sorry for your experience but what has that got to do with this?

RainyWoodland · 04/08/2024 12:21

In recent history I am thinking of the Leicester riots and the riots that spread across the country starting in Tottenham, also the statue toppling, and I don’t think there is a consistency in ‘type’ of person. YABU OP.

RainyWoodland · 04/08/2024 12:22

I saw something that said riots usually start when there’s a heatwave.

its got a lot to do with it when those men wont police the men that look the same as them but will go out rioting over others who havent actually done anything wrong, they just happen to have a different accent or a different skin colour.

FolkestoneMassive · 04/08/2024 12:26
  • Place-based disparities, not just relating to income deprivation but also poor infrastructure, struggling job markets and lack of opportunity, and multi-generational poverty and unemployment, are more likely to affect disadvantaged White pupils due to the distribution of ethnic diversity in the country. Tackling these requires highly tailored local solutions.

The above is one of the reasons for white working class boys’ educational under-achievement. If you come from some places in the U.K. it’s not difficult to see why hopelessness sets in early.

Northernnature · 04/08/2024 12:27

@ForYouManImADoomBoy with all respect, its not up to people to police those that "look the same as them" (that's vigilante justice), we have a police force for that (albeit abit useless atm). Did you report it?

Yes but what is there reason from them? I am not really expecting anyone to answer but do any of them actually really know why they are rioting apart from 'stop the immigrants' anyone can shout phrases, but do they have real idea?

Northernnature · 04/08/2024 12:35

@Edingril I am suggesting that their reasons are similar. There are alot of people that share these concerns (probably the majority who are not like most mumsnetters and live in the real world) who would never riot in a month of Sundays but are utterly fed up with not being listened to and govt making our lives worse (despite costing loads of money).

Marchitectmummy · 04/08/2024 12:37

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 04/08/2024 11:59

They are routing because they are thugs and agitators.

Which rioters are you referring to? There have been quite a few recently all with differing demographics.

Goldengamer · 04/08/2024 12:38

A lot are from organised groups . They are online organisations who plan these riots. Then get joined by the rest of the reprobates who want to join in. Did you see the kids there also acting like hooligans , disgusting great way to bring your kids up , no hope is there . I reckon they should bring the army in like they are saying they will .

Northernnature · 04/08/2024 12:39

I think alot of people in the army are also probably pissed off with recent govts to put it mildly.

LiterallyOnFire · 04/08/2024 12:41

Apologies. That’s a predictive text error. It should have said non-white British.

it’s not dog whistle at all. It’s arrogant to fail to see immigration is a problem for many people, just because it isn’t a problem for you. It isn’t a problem for professional me either, with my comfy income with private healthcare including dentistry, in my privately-owned house, near outstanding schools. The people protesting have a different sort of life and they are in competition for resources like local-authority housing.

And it’s like protest is only allowed by the middle classes when they are marching against Brexit or some other cause that’s approved by the patronising middle classes.

And just so you know, I voted remain, I’m not white British, I’m a first generation Brit and an ethnic minority. I grew up in a council house and spent some of my childhood in care. I was lucky to be reasonably brainy, not through anything I did, just luck.

Yes I think you have a point and we are going to have to find ways of tackling what you describe. If just calling them racist thugs and hoping they'd go away, worked, it would have worked by now .

Northernnature · 04/08/2024 12:07

This will not go away just because rioters are dealt with swiftly (unlike other groups rioting which has been noted). This government has very low support -one of the lowest vote numbers ever despite the highest population ever and very low turnout. Less than half the number who voted for Brexit voted for Labour they just benefited from the collapse of the Tory vote which was also linked to the issues people are angry about. They are already making a complete mess of things.

Do we think the rioters are the thuggish wing of the reform voters?

Mrsjayy · 04/08/2024 12:47

They are men who think they are marginalised (I think that's the right word) they assume they are being discriminated against and not "included" in society. And moan amongst themselves that "others" are being put ahead of them hard working men who have been tossed aside, I have seen women at these things but it's mainly coked up men !

That's not the impression I get.

I think that they think that they ARE representative of society.

reesewithoutaspoon · 04/08/2024 12:50

Its anger,
Angry that they don't have much
Angry that they are competing for jobs, housing, healthcare
Anger that the areas they grew up in have changed immeasurably because typically immigrants coming here to work in lower-paid industries like hospitality and healthcare aren't living in nice middle-class areas, they are in more deprived areas where housing costs are low. This has pushed up rental prices, reduced social housing, and changed the area that they live into something they no longer recognise or in some cases feel safe in. Not many people like change.

Add into this mix that when they voiced their concern or anger about how it was affecting their lives they got shouted down, called racist bigots, and ignored.

The nice middle-class areas aren't affected this negatively. They get the interesting deli, the nice educated well-paid migrants, the cheap builders and trades or cleaners. They are enriched.

No one was listening to them and along came Farage and Tommy Robinson and gave them an outlet for their anger. Trump is doing the same in America. He's telling these angry disaffected people what they want to hear, that there is a reason for why their life is going down the shitter.

They are lashing out now, they see immigrants as getting preferential treatment, being less policed, getting social housing and they have had enough.
They don't give a shit if they smash up the areas they live in, they have nothing to lose, and it's all shit anyway as far as they are concerned.

Good question. History suggests you would have a political party and thug group if you have far right views. See BNP and the NF.

i see a few Nigel for PM and Tommy for Home Sec t shirts so some people do make the overlap.
