It's winter you're sat in front of the fire with a picnic, what's on your list?

For me it's various meats, local cheeses, artisan crackers, sourdough, baked Camembert, chutney, pickles, crudités crisps and dip.

Is anything missing?

Olives, grapes, figs, nuts.

Fire in the living room?

A picnic?

Im at the table where I can fit more in if my stomach isnt all squashed up by sitting on the floor

watchingsmurfs · 03/08/2024 17:41

Red wine

Justmuddlingalong · 03/08/2024 17:43

A big bowl of stovies, crusty bread and lurpak butter and a pot of Yorkshire tea.

ElephantilonZed · 03/08/2024 17:43

Hot chocolate and some sort of chocolatey pudding!

😬 yes open fire, languishing on the sofa picking at stuff put prettily on a board. Daft maybe but it's quite nice. Especially in winter.

That does sound good!

Are we allowed to toast crumpets on the fire and have them lots of salted butter?

CoffeandTiaMaria · 03/08/2024 17:49

Tomato soup, French onion soup, crusty French bread, cold salted butter.
Hot sausage rolls, scotch eggs, chutney, celery, watercress.
Apple crumble with hot custard, ice cream and double cream.
Pot of tea.

FadedRed · 03/08/2024 17:50

Cheese fondue or Raclette, white wine, mixed pickles, olives and really good bread.
Tiramisu for pudding.

JC03745 · 03/08/2024 17:54

-Mugs of home made pea/ham soup with buttered, crusty baguette
-Port, Roquefort/cambozola or brie, crackers and grapes
-Raclette (because I've only used it twice in about 10yrs!)

ToastandJamandTea · 03/08/2024 17:55

Baked brie, chilli jam, crusty sourdough bread and olives. Red wine.
Can't wait. I hate summer.

WildFlowerBees · 03/08/2024 18:03

Thank you, yes to toasting crumpets on the fire, I like the soup idea too. I think I'll fall into old habits though where I eat most of the Camembert and then I'm too full and feeling very fat. Maybe I'll take out the baked cheese and add french onion soup.

Oh the sofa, I thought you literally meant on the floor on a tartan rug

Yes, well same as others, cheeses, olives, chutneys, chocolate (not too close to the fire)

This is such a cosy autumn inspiring thread, I know you said winter but makes me look forward to Autumn

WildFlowerBees · 03/08/2024 18:10

I don't even know why I've asked it's only just August. I do love a winter picnic though!

That's not too far away, my brain is in late Nov for this picnic. I think I need a hobby. Confused

Fondue.

StormingNorman · 03/08/2024 18:11

I’m going to lower the tone but I wouldn’t mind a cocktail sausage!

Crikey that sounds good! I’ll skip the tea and have gin with it please-and-thank-you

WonderingWanda · 03/08/2024 18:20

All the cheese and crackers. Mince pies if it's anywhere near Christmas.

Love this.

Pretty much perfect. Am in. Agree with adding olives, chilli jam and red wine. Would also add some quince paste, some celery sticks for the dips and some fridge-cold crispy red gala apples for crunch. Please may I also have some posh dark chocolate with ginger too? And the Scrabble Board nearby. And some nice coffee and brandy to go alongside, afterwards?
Heaven…

(I have been privately scrolling Autumn cashmere and getting excited about boots and jumpers. Cannot possibly admit this in real life right now.)

Love the summer but love to look forward to what’s next, too.

Excellent thread.

Well it is winter where I am in Melbourne. Dazzlingly sunny skies most days, but bloody hell it's cold.
I have the fire, and pukka tartan picnic blankets that weigh a ton. I've been contemplating picnics, though to be fair they're of food I intend to take on long walks when the weather gets milder. They still work well indoors. Smile

So many great ideas already on this thread but my addition would be pan bagnat.

HearTheMessenger · 04/08/2024 00:18

Picnics are indoors now? What the hell kind of AI generated chicanery is this?
