I’m beginning to think the trafficking poster is Kemi Badenoch.

BIossomtoes · 04/08/2024 10:34

That poster is notorious for being hard of thinking, I don’t think it’s even a wind up.

I can't even understand half of what they write.

Here's my neighbour's rescue kitty - so young and yet already so judgy LOL, cats are born judgy.

I can't fathom why anyone would burn to a library - they're my special places and I visit mine at least once a week. What does it represent in their heads?

Well maybe Patel knows something that is obvious; this violence is about white nationalism and it’s not to be negotiated with.

This violence is about white supremacy, I agree (stoked by poverty and political rhetoric).

The violent disorder before that was a Roma community who wanted neglected children returned to them.

The violent disorder before that was a Muslim community at Manchester airport who were reacting to a grievance and ended up attacking police (before one kicked a prone man in the head).

The violent disorder before that was pro Gaza protesters smashing up buildings to ‘make their point’.

The violent disorder before that were parents from Muslim communities gathering to hound a teacher who has ‘slighted’ their religion. He is still in hiding, years later.

The disorder before that (not violent perhaps but criminal damage) was BLM in Bristol tearing down a statue to throw in the sea, while police allowed it. I’m not too bothered about this, but shows causing damage is a running theme despite the aims of the march.

The violent disorder before that was the biggest, 2011 and thousands were arrested when a protest against police racism (triggered by the shooting of Mark Duggan) erupted and the rioters came from all ethnicities in large numbers. Burning buildings, people died, looting was rife.

We have a problem with thuggery, the common theme being men who feel they don’t have the level of control over the rest of the world they want to have.

Take it up with Patel? I’m not sure she made any statements on the above incidents? Seems to be exercising judgment on what is the more serious

IClaudine · 04/08/2024 11:05

I remember in 2011 one man was arrested for encouraging the rioting on social media. Half of Twitter would have to be arrested now. It's a different world to 2011.

eta: it was two men.

This morning when I looked in my garden I saw a squirrel. Had a hard time persuading the dog to ignore it 😂

This lot appear to be giving the police a helping hand. The guy inciting the library burning has live streamed it and put it on his YouTube channel. I think it would be fair to say they aren’t the sharpest tools in the box.

Starmer was DPP when the 2011 riots happened. The police were making arrests for months after them and they pretty much all got custodial sentences. I don’t see these rioters getting off lightly. Hopefully the same happens to those organising and co-ordinating them.

IClaudine · 04/08/2024 11:11

There are loads of squirrels living in our local churchyard. They are fun to watch but I think they annoy the other wildlife.

Years ago I used to criminal defence work and used to have this problem where someone had actually recorded themselves in a criminal act. Obviously was difficult to deal with but I never forgot the answers which was chiefly they recorded it to share with their mates for bragging rights and it was a joke/bants/not serious . I suppose we see it all the time now on SM.

IClaudine · 04/08/2024 11:15

In 2011 young people went to prison for stealing bottles of water. This lot of rioters are in for a shock.

I think they genuinely believe the rest of the UK is behind them and regard them as heroes and that us why they are so blatant. Meanwhile the rest of the UK is getting together on SM and identifying them.

A reminder After the Aug 2011 riots, police & my prosecutors examined all the video evidence for MONTHS identifying & bringing offenders to justice - 1000s of them
Some didn’t get arrested till a year later!
Prison was the usual sentence
My boss was someone called Keir Starmer

I see Cardiff did a good job of standing up to racism yesterday 👏

Yea I agree. The sentences for these crimes were significant. Tells you a lot about Starmer who does not appear all the soft that they kept driving the prosecutions for year. It’s not viewed as a punch up with the police and go home.

Priti Patel has unequivocally called out the violence and refused to utter any justification for it.

https://x.com/IanDunt/status/1820017810443059240

Good for her.

Shame her colleagues haven't stepped up to do the same.

BIossomtoes · 04/08/2024 11:27

Credit where it’s due, Patel has made exactly the right call there.

prettybird · 04/08/2024 11:27

I'm glad that I live in a community with a high immigrant and ethnic minority population (ds' primary school was over 60% English as an Additional Language and there was 54 languages spoken at his secondary school).

There was an extremely nasty and racist unprovoked murder of a young white man here in the early 2000s Sad. The BNP and Nick Griffin thought that they could capitalise on it and came to the neighbourhood to foment discord. The boy's mother helped to stop the race riots that they wanted to incite, by saying she didn't want the local Asian community targeted because of his death.

Iirc, the BNP then tried to get elected in upcoming council and/or Scottish Parliament elections and were soundly trounced.

ive seen loads of people online shouting about the harehills disorder and how no ones been arrested for that when they HAVE made arrests. dozens of them. the dont seem to get that there will be police working behind the scenes for ALL the riots/disorders, whoever is causing them, to bring the people causing disorder to justice.

Last night there was an 'ironic' hashtag on twitter #FarRightThugsUnite with so-called not very bright 'ordainary people' posting photos of themselves [and sometimes their children] - nice little ready made data base for anyone interested - expect they'll be posting indignantly about facial recognition next

See that some police forces are using surveillance drones of rioting now - that will cause further upset and the amount of evidence overwhelming

Tech amplifies the problems, maybe it is also part of the solution? Something that is different from 2011. Online activity is now more intense.

Initially the police will pick up those rioting who are already known to them, either identified by officers or from a computer looking through the database of mugshots.

Then they will move onto those who do not have previous.
Makes sense to arrest them one by one from their homes, rather than trying to bring them all in on mass at the riot.

They have made arrests for Harehills, probably more (proportionately) than they did last night (although there will be many more in the days to come).

As I said before, the violent protests over the last 10 years have spanned a range of motives - anti-racism, racism, religious outrage, pro Gaza.

We need to tackle the thug problem at its root. Nobody has the right to burn a car or smash up a building for any reason.

The police need to approach each and every disorder equally and robustly. No shying away because of sensitivities.

Don't forget there's a leadership election on Wink

Actually to be fair I did think she seemed a lot more reasonable once her successor (Braverman) became home secretary. Would certainly prefer Patel to Badenoch.

It's bad when the Shetland Pony of the Apocalypse seems like a good pick 😂

ForYouManImADoomBoy · 04/08/2024 11:51

violence is violence, whatever the root of it is. doesnt matter how they try to justify it but i dont see how looting a greggs or an independent shop for vapes and cigs is going to 'get your voice heard' . it was never about those little girls. that was just an excuse to spew their hatred on people they see as beneath them.
