BTW I am reading this at the moment. It's fascinating book about how post war fascism, became a force in British politics. It's just so depressing that this is happening again but you can also see people are fighting back.

In Bristol there was 100 fascist far right thugs, but they were outnumbered 4 to 1 by anti fascist people marching. Of course that didn't stop running battles, injuries and 14 arrests.

Mysteriously the press aren't interested in incidents where violence didn't happen. It's almost like they are invested in one side.

Back in the UK and for the first time I have cat tax lined up - thanks to our hotel's much loved moggies.

That's a very regal cat!

Notonthestairs · 04/08/2024 09:48

Yes, lorded over us on the staircases! But very chatty.

One of my grandsons just returned from Interrailing in Europe. He and a couple of friends, so 3 English guys, watched the Euro match, England v Holland, in a Dutch bar full of Dutch fans. England won. Lots of sighing, hand shaking and beer buying. No fighting, no shouting, etc. I asked if he could imagine that happening here with nationalities reversed. No. We are a bloody sad nation at times.

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/08/2024 10:09

When my dc were born, we were utterly skint, one of the first things they owned was a library card. Watching them toddle around choosing books was a joy. For a community to lose this resource is so sad.

So far we've had made up ball shit excuse to attack a groups places of worship.
Now we've got them burning books.

What's next on the list for these fascists?

Cheguevarahamster · 04/08/2024 10:13

I've just realised that Sunak (as well Farage) has also not condemned the riots. (I can't find anything so forgive me if I'm incorrect). Can you imagine if it was Starmer in opposition and he didn't condemn the riots - there would be uproar in the press/media.

newnamethanks · 04/08/2024 10:13

Uniforms with a special logo probably. And membership cards.

I was thinking this. Where even is Sunak?

Thought the same - maybe Sunaks on holiday which is where Starmer is according to a couple of posters on another thread [???]

Don't care at all about Farage not speaking up - would prefer he if permanently shut up TBH

newnamethanks · 04/08/2024 10:24

Aren't they all on holiday? It's August, ideal time of year for fake news and public disorder.

I'm afraid to say a Citizens Advice Bureau completely gutted and set fire to. Nothing left. Just a burnt out shell.

These morons are actually destroying the means for local people to get help.

IClaudine · 04/08/2024 10:29

Christ. On another thread, a poster is trying to blame the violence on Starmer's "trafficking policies". I know it's a wind-up attempt, but it is shameful.

I have noticed a few certain regular posters on MN have tried to twist the terrible events this week. Not much time spent expressing sympathy for the families in Southport or the people suffering the rioters. Just lots of wriggling and slithering to blame Labour and/or Muslim people.

Farage is concentrating on women's boxing (as if we'd forget about his comments about maternity leave 🙄)

Braverman - who a great deal to say about hate marches- has been silent.

That poster is notorious for being hard of thinking, I don’t think it’s even a wind up.

IClaudine · 04/08/2024 10:38

@evenstar I am glad the shop is OK.

My youngest memory is aged 3 going on our weekly visit to the library to choose books. It was a long time ago so must have made a massive impression on me.

DuncinToffee · 04/08/2024 10:39

Priti Patel has unequivocally called out the violence and refused to utter any justification for it.

Good for Patel. Credit where it’s due.

cardibach · 04/08/2024 10:46

Burning a library is low. What is it Fay Weldon says in ‘Letters to Alice on First Reading Jane Austen? Something about having to be really bad to burn literature. She’s commenting how people might use a Jilly Cooper (or similar) from the hotel used books collection to light the barbecue, but tat nobody would use Austen. (It’s a fab book about the relevance of literature and the relationships between women of different generations if you haven’t read it).

Notonthestairs · 04/08/2024 10:46

"Now is a moment for national reflection and solidarity - to pull back from the wave of violence we have seen, to call it out for what it is - without fear or favour - and for Parliament to speak with one voice in condemnation. We either believe in the rule of law, or we do not."

Certainly would agree with this from Patel.

bombastix · 04/08/2024 10:47

Well maybe Patel knows something that is obvious; this violence is about white nationalism and it’s not to be negotiated with.

ForYouManImADoomBoy · 04/08/2024 10:50

still a heavy police presence here today. not sure if they are expecting anything here but i do know there is meant to be a 'protest' in a town nearby so its possible it could spill over here i suppose given the train line to that town runs through here.
