I think the persistence is different, normally it dies down after a couple of nights. It’s very frustrating as any fool with eyes can see some root causes need addressing and the same old ‘zero tolerance, squash dissent then act like nothing happened’ will not work. But anyone who points this out will be accused of ‘pandering to the far right’

persistence? i’m talking about violence…

does anyone just feel like this is different? i’m genuinely so beyond disgusted and worried

I did wonder if it was. So I went back to my old case practice to check on riot and what it means.

So the good news is that it’s exactly what it used to be. The sentencing also had not changed in terms of seriousness either. The average sentence is about 48 months for riot. That was 10 years.

Jason118 · 04/08/2024 20:45

Well I've got work tomorrow so there's that to look forward to for me!

'We didn't start the fire' needs a few more verses, sadly.

There is a 2023 cover version from Fall Out Boy with updated lyrics - probably needs updating every year. 😔

Evenstar · 04/08/2024 20:49

DH and I went to a family birthday party last night, my uncle turned 90.

We are looking forward to going to the Olympic Homecoming Celebration in Manchester later in the month, DH won tickets in a draw ☺️

countrygirl99 · 04/08/2024 20:56

Had a lovely evening with Spanish and Chinese visitors. In a couple of weeks we have American and Colombian friends coming over for a meal. In between we will catch up with Jamaican friends and probably with DHs cousin and her Dutch husband. I've just booked a flight to see DS2 and Finish DIL. I guess that must make us anti-British or something or other.

So our Holiday Inn has been set on fire - there are people inside - vulnerable people who came here fleeing war - terrified and stranded in a hotel surrounded by thugs - I hate the right

I do love the subtlety on this thread 😄

it might be the catalyst for change. Try not to get too worried. Keep yourself safe, if you are in any of the areas.

Maybe it would help to think about something nice. I always put on a familiar film if I need distracting. Persuasion is my go to.

Where are you? I’m trying to keep up with the news but it’s understandably disjointed

Horrendous. These far right thugs are awful Sad

DuncinToffee · 04/08/2024 21:03

I saw a video taken by people inside the hotel and there families watching and cheering as if was a fun day out.

They will have some nice souvenir photos....

The footage of the people outside the hotel with their throat slitting gestures was striking

ghostyslovesheets · 04/08/2024 21:06

I'm in Tamworth - my youngest daughters BF was invited to go down by his mates (they are 15/16) - he refused pointing out that he IS an immigrant - so they have been sending him videos of the 'fun' - he's upset - they are young, easily influenced idiots

Cheguevarahamster · 04/08/2024 21:07

Spandauer · 04/08/2024 20:34

Oh well jel for Billy Joel! I've been playing him recently via Spotify. Somewhat apt for the moment is my current fav song - "we didn't start the fire"

Happy bday for Tuesday Blossomtoes 🍸

Love Billy Joel. Re Watching 'The boys' at the moment and there's are loads of reference to him, as Wee Hughie is a fan. The Boys is a fantastic satire on politics. I highly recommend it.

God, do they know what they are risking if they get caught?

Stupid little twats Angry. They haven’t the life experience to see how they are being manipulated. I’m glad your dd’s bf is standing fast and not joining in. He won’t be alone.

Apolloneuro · 04/08/2024 20:08

That sounds fab. Vienna is one of my favourite songs. I tend not to go to live music. Theatre is more my thing. Got loads of tickets booked for the next year - ghost, six, Hamilton.

I love musical theatre too! Tickets in the pipeline for Hamilton (3rd time) and A Chorus Line, and I recently saw Hadestown and Standing at the Sky’s Edge in London. Standing…is a fabulous show. I hope it gets a tour/another west end run.

ghostyslovesheets · 04/08/2024 21:15

@PandoraSox I don't think they have given it much thought - daft twats

@Saucery he's Lithuanian - I don't think they have the brain cells to work out why he wouldn't want to join and 'England for the English' type of event!

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/08/2024 21:16

Poor Stephen. The daily Mail have ruined his holiday.

I'm so sorry about this. I do wonder if it was term time if this would have happened. Kids at school together have greater influence and friends from all walks of life. Also what happened when they go back? Surely it won't just be the same again? How do children who are asylum seekers, refugees or immigrants just forget their mates out protesting about their very existence in the uk?

This is so horrifically sad with such far reaching consequences.

change in what way? if they are the ones enacting change it’s not good change is it?
