Listening to someone talk on sky news. He’s saying that PM could have taken a softer “I realise that some people have concerns about immigration…but this isn’t the way to address it. You must stop the violence.” The sort of ‘There are good people on all sides” approach.

However he praised him for ceding nothing and taking a bold, quite combative approach.

bombastix · 04/08/2024 17:48

A reminder why he lost. He had zero grip

God no. How weak would that have been? Starmer would have been finished before he had even started had he done softly softly. You can’t negotiate with rioters. They don’t do that; they start off with violence.

prettybird · 04/08/2024 17:56

I'm not sure if I saw this first in these threads (I know I've seen it before) but a friend recently posted this in FB and it seems appropriate at the moment. For Murdoch, you could swap the owners on the Telegraph, the Express and/or the Mail, or Farage, Tice, Braverman or Trump Angry

Any and all of them benefit from fomenting discord SadAngry

Sunak finally speaks on day whatever we're on now

''The shocking scenes we’re seeing on the streets of Britain have nothing to do with the tragedy in Southport. This is violent, criminal behaviour that has no place in our society. The police have our full support to deal with these criminals swiftly and they must face the full weight of the law.''

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/08/2024 18:00

The other problem with the softly, softly approach is that most of the public don’t really care all that much about immigration. And those that do mostly only care when they’ve been whipped up to care. I’d the likes of Farage & Patel & Braverman et al just shut up then the number of people who think it’s a big issue would fall.

Anyway, we’ve just had an election that was in no way a victory for the whole anti-immigrant rhetoric. Aren’t they supposed to just get over it? That’s what I was led to believe was supposed to happen after you lose.

Has Sunak apologised for his Stop the Boats dog whistle?

I wish the media would stop reporting the riots as linked to the murders in Southport. I doubt most of these rioters could tell you what had happened of the names of the three murdered girls.

They had the audacity to start their march with a 2 minute silence in Middlesbrough before smashing the place up.

Sorry, no cats. Would a fuzzy pic of a fuzzy baby woodpigeon that Google photos just reminded me of do?

It’s devastating how young some of these people are. They’re walking down residential streets, in Middlesbrough smashing windows.

This is the result of over a decade of ignoring young people in areas of deprivation. Downgrading of community youth services, lack of decent apprenticeships, lack of mental health support, lack of jobs, no hope, no aspiration…Absolute fuck all to do with Muslims.

I know that’s simplistic, but you know what I mean.

Nooo

But Jenrick actually defended it this morning

Totally agree.

I was shocked at footage inside an Apple/mobile phone store with what looked like a 10 year old smashing the place up with a piece of wood, whilst probably his parents were looting the place

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/08/2024 18:05

I can imagine a lot of Prevent referrals are going to get made.

Willowkins · 04/08/2024 18:05

I don't think this is a rationing issue anymore (blaming immigrants because there is not enough to go round). This smacks of the 6 January riots and I think maybe they (whoever 'they' are) want to overturn or at the very least weaken the government. Thank goodness Starmer is having none of it.

Apolloneuro · 04/08/2024 18:06

Hamza Yousafa has come out with it and called them nazis. He’s now saying that we need to make these groups like EDL banned and made illegal.

Slightly more difficult to incite people if they don’t have issues though. Although I’m willing to bet a fair number of these are just bored coked up racists.

Just checked on Lozza. He’s doubling down. Hopefully there’s a jail sentence coming there.

Yes. Something needs doing about X and Elon Musk. Can it not be taken down for 72 hours?

There’s a hotel, housing asylum seekers where I am, but down ‘ere in Devon, any trouble and the farmers would come with their muck spreaders. Cover the little thugs with manure. Then the police could smell them out, bit like Cinderella.

newnamethanks · 04/08/2024 18:16

The poor buggers in the hotels must be utterly terrified. I thought the days of pitchforks and burning brands were long gone but no, just beneath the surface. I hope they're all safe.

MissMarplesNiece · 04/08/2024 18:16

I agree @Apolloneuro . I think fascism has always fed off poverty & desperation. Levelling up should have been helping improve the lives of people in these communities, only we know how that went - or didn't go.

That aside, I hope that Counter Terrorism is involved in identifying and enabling prosecution of some of the most thuggish elements of the mob leading what's happening. When I look at the UK Gov definition of terrorism it seems a lot of what is happening can be described as domestic terrorism:

"In summary this defines terrorism as 'The use or threat of serious violence against a person or serious damage to property where that action is: designed to influence the government or an international governmental organisation or to intimidate the public or a section of the public;"

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/08/2024 18:17

@Apolloneuro They need to bring both their Malinois too. (I did check, they have 2).

PandoraSox · 04/08/2024 18:17

Does Fox want to go to prison?

As far as I am aware, counter terrorism have been watching the far right here for a while.

Fox would LOVE to be a martyr for his sorry fucked up cause, whatever it may be.
