Today's protests

Is your city/town affected by the protests today? I'm concerned by them and wondering if I should participate in a counter-protest.
But the other part of me feels that this will all descend in to male violence on both sides and I should stay clear.

I'd love to attend the one closest to me today as I fully support the cause, but I'm scared there might be violence from the thugs who turn up just to riot.

What cause

Waaaaaahh · 03/08/2024 09:18

I've just had a look back at @Onehotday posting history and it's all really quite abrupt, aggressive and seeking of reactions so it's probably not worth the effort retaliating to be honest.

RosaMoline · 03/08/2024 09:23

We have the oldest mosque in the UK here (Woking)
if there had been anything planned for tonight or tomorrows , I would’ve definitely joined a ‘protective circle’
Not on the list, fortunately.

Beezknees · 03/08/2024 09:23

Yes and I'm pissed off as I'm attending a wedding in the city centre today.

WickieRoy · 03/08/2024 09:25

There's a counter protest planned here in a different location and organised by reputable sorts. I'd go to that (and have in the past) as there's unlikely to be trouble there. Maybe wouldn't bring kids just in case, but that would be over cautious.

So much depends on the locality.

PollyPeachum · 03/08/2024 09:28

I am keeping away, I do not want to even be part of the audience that they are 'playing' to.

Olympicfatigued · 03/08/2024 09:30

Don’t join in with any kind of protest, counter or otherwise. All you would be doing is adding to the problem and making the job of the cops more onerous. They don’t have endless capacity or cells.

It's worse than pointless, it's just inciting further thuggery

Really? I'm not sure they would beat up someone who looks like their grandmother. If you're facing a line of armoured up police with their faces covered, it's easy to be a thug. If you're facing a short, older woman holding a sign and looking you in the eye, it's very difficult to be the first person to yell in her face or give her a push.

There's a good chance I'm being naive here :(

Ive been on countless anti-racism/anti-austerity/anti-war protests in the past, but these aren’t protests, they’re riots. I won’t be going today for safety reasons.

I think you are right.

It is also why the police try and remain out of riot gear for as long as possible.

What is the cause that you fully support?

ErrolTheDragon · 03/08/2024 09:36

That was meant to be a report not a quote.
Never mind... it's best to post clearly with no room for misinterpretation. Perhaps that poster would like to clarify which cause they support.

Hewlet · 03/08/2024 09:37

Yes, and thank god we don't have the quasi-military police of the US. But I did hate seeing the videos of them tackling the thugs with nothing more than their flat peaked caps.

How do you know where they’re planned to riot so you can avoid?

I was hugely impressed by how brave and disciplined those officers were.

Freefree · 03/08/2024 09:39

Those who complained about the palestine protests..bet those don't look so bad now do they?
They were for the most part peaceful...the ones going on this week are not protests they're riots.

Also what are they now 'protesting' against? The killer in Southport has been named and said to be from a church going family..so shiudlbt they be outside churches not mosques?

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 03/08/2024 09:42

Apparently there’s one planned for our nearest city tomorrow, which is unusual as we’re usually far removed from what’s going on in the rest of the country. I guess we’re quite near to Southport though so maybe that’s why. I wouldn’t be going near the city anyway but I certainly wouldn’t be getting involved!

VerySadCase · 03/08/2024 09:44

Zusammen · 03/08/2024 09:38

There is a list on the Hope Not Hate website. They said that they might not all materialise but at least you can see what's planned.

There is a planned riot in my nearest city tonight. I did wonder about joining a counter protest as I do feel it is important for decent people to stand up and be counted. I certainly wouldn't want to make the police's job harder though. In any case, I think I might be too much of a coward - I would be quite scared of facing up to all those angry racist thugs.

There are idiots saying there is information being covered up about the killer. I will not repeat the speculation, but I am sure you can guess what that information is supposed to be. It's being parroted on MN too.

PollyPeachum · 03/08/2024 09:50

The idea of "Hope not Hate" encouraging counter protests is just inviting a pitched battle.
Ordinary people against ordinary people with a few activists at the core organising.
Will that really improve the world?

I am 15 mins away from you, if you do hear of any protective rings let me know. I can’t stand by and watch these awful scenes anymore.

Where can you find out where they are? My black dc are going to the cinema today to see Deadpool.

I fail to see how that's relevant

What?! It’s pretty bloody obvious.
