I am a third year student midwife in my last week of placement. To qualify I need to deliver 40 babies. With 3 shifts left I started this night shift needing 3 deliveries. I’ve only gone and got a hat trick and delivered my 40th baby!

I am absolutely over the moon and need to shout about it to anyone who will listen until a more civilised hour!

What a fabulous and privileged job I have ❤️

Congratulations!!! Wonderful news!

Ooh congrats OP! I had a fantastic student midwife with me for the birth of DS2. I often wonder how she's getting on and hope she stuck with it.

She was amazing and I wrote her and the qualified midwife who was with her a thank you letter because that birth was incredible compared to DS1s at a different hospital which was awful.

BlueSmurfPantMan · 01/08/2024 19:15

Well done OP!

Coming from the opposite point of view, when my daughter was born I had a very lovely male midwife who I had never met before - my "assigned" midwife was on holiday.

After she was safely delivered he told me that she was the first baby he had delivered with no supervision. I thanked him for not telling me that earlier :-)

Thank you all so much! So many kind messages and beautiful stories.

i have just finished my last ever shift and I feel incredible!

to answer a couple of questions: If you don’t get your 40 births, you just have to continue to attend placement until you do! The NMC has changed its guidance in the last year to 30 births and 20 additional birth that you assist with (such as instrumental births) but it’s at the discretion of each university if they do that. The changes also mean you can count a deliver if the placenta is retained as long as you continue the care into the post natal period.

I remember my first birth as it was on my birthday. A beautiful baby girl. I also remember baby J who was a still birth. Born en caul and absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.

I have a big break now until October so I will be relaxing and spending time with my own son, whilst being so very proud of myself.

Thank you all again for making my special moment even better x

You never forget your midwife - I never forget Anita in cambridge who sat with me all through the night and then the male midwife in Cumbria who sat by me very unintrusively and let me grab his hand and practically pull it off his arm!

Anita delivered my third baby at the Rosie 16 years ago- I will never forget her, what a fabulous woman!

OP, in years to come, it'll be your name popping up on threads like these - congratulations!
