I admire some of the philosophy of the Michaela School.

The philosophy is fine - expect high standards, push people to achieve their potential. The practice is questionable at best though and she has some very unpleasant links.

if you are a secular person it is hard to disagree with the approach. Honestly I would rather we did reconsider the extent to which schools have religious participation.

cardibach · 02/08/2024 13:00

I think the ‘religious participation’ aspect is a very tiny part of it. And if you’re referring to what I think you are, it’s very easy to disagree with. Allowing young people to have a space to observe their religion would seem uncontroversial even to me, and I’m an atheist. Everyone should be allowed space to follow their belief if they have one.

Department for Education papers show £1.2 million was spent on helping Katherine Birbalsingh, the headteacher of Michaela School, to launch a second school in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. Ms Birbalsingh says the Covid pandemic prevented the plans for the second school going ahead.

I could be wrong, but I think the approach is more that education is what matters most and it is a community of learners, undivided by race or religion, working towards a collective goal. Isn’t that the great leveller?

EDITED to add, I’m not very knowledgeable about this school and don’t claim to be an expert. Just going on my experience as a teacher and a few bits I’ve heard.

And that’s fine, but people do have differences and different beliefs. Allowing a space for private prayer for any and all religions doesn’t diminish the learning community part. It’s unnecessary. She does some excellent things (I like the lunch time discussions etc) but I disagree with this (and lots of other things).

Apolloneuro · 02/08/2024 13:18

Can’t argue with the results (and therefore opportunities) the school gets.

Anyway Cardi, at least on this thread we can disagree with things nicely and without the need for a police dog to bite our bums 😂

Apolloneuro · 02/08/2024 13:20

I’m desperate for a German Shepherd puppy. My favourite breed of dogs. Really don’t have the lifestyle for one though.

DuncinToffee · 02/08/2024 13:29

I think the issue is more KB and the views she airs online.

It would be good to find out what happened to the money.

If you want an guaranteed Racist Arse Biter you’d be better off with a Malinois Wink

They are absolutely STUNNING dogs. If you watch videos of them, they are GSs on steroids.

Don’t think the thug would have any bum cheek left if one of those got him.

In fact, my tax on the next thread is going to be a picture of a Malinois 😻

I think it’s difficult to find ones with a sensible temperament these days. We had them growing up, but I get the impression it’s a very different breed to the one 30years ago. Love a GS puppy though. They have the cutest ears.

I think on many things she is throughly regressive! And I would not send my children there; but I do have strong views on secularism and how that works in law. I wasn’t surprised when she won that JR.

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/08/2024 14:02

I think our local force use Mallinois now rather than GSD. Or they did for a bit.

Interesting. They’re certainly not your average family pet.

Evenstar · 02/08/2024 15:02

@Apolloneuro I had a beautiful German shepherd, I would agree with @RafaistheKingofClay that the temperament and health can be suspect in British bred lines. My in laws and I had ones bred from German imports, they were amazing dogs.

They are really more like a child though in terms of their need for your time and attention, I was told that an adult GSD is similar to an eight year old child in terms of intelligence and reasoning ability.

Evenstar · 02/08/2024 15:04

I am very concerned about the weekend, especially as my son in law’s shop now seems to be equidistant between another “Reclaim Are Country” event and an anti racism march 😬

Apolloneuro · 02/08/2024 15:23

Sorry to hear that @Evenstar

The problem I have with the Michaela type of school is that they seem to operate on the assumption that all children are inherently bad and therefore extreme rules are needed to keep them compliant. It's just not a philosophy I find acceptable. It has to be possible to maintain discipline and achievement without the extreme measures.

When life gives you Farage, be more Darren. A fantastic caller on LBC this afternoon.

Isn't the link and add for something to do with pets?

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/08/2024 16:38

I’ve just had a thought. If Tommy Robinson has an Irish passport, could we revoke his British citizenship a la Shamima Begum?

I realise that I’m opposed to this in principle, but I’d the patriots have taught me anything over the last week, it’s that hypocrisy is a British value.
