I can't remember where I read it, but apparently in Sweden rather than build more prisons, convicted offenders can "wait their turn" for a prison place. So, person is sentenced to say 6 months, and has to wait until another prisoner is released to make a space, before then entering prison to serve their 6 month sentence. Would something like that work in this country?
I've also seen suggestions that there are many women who shouldn't really be in prison & community sentences would be more appropriate. Maybe there could then be consolidation of those women for whom prison is unavoidable, into a smaller number of women's prisons leaving some women's prisons to be repurposed to use for men?
I personally think that there is a lot of debate to be had about the prison system - eg what is it for- punishment, rehabilitation, public protection, a combination of these, and what can be done to make it more effective in whatever the aim is decided to be? I hope that John Timpson, the new prison minister, will have some good ideas regarding this.
