Well done Southport.

BustingBaoBun · 31/07/2024 11:26

So pleased to see the concerted effort by Southport residents. Showing that they are not part of the vile disgusting EDL rioters, who apparently came from all over the country.
Absolutely shameful and not indicative of a community mourning three little girls.

Nigel Farage, I despise you. You fanned the flames

This is how Southport responded. A group of around 100 members of the community are repairing damage to the local mosque, seen here rebuilding a wall. St Luke’s Road, last night strewn with rubble and debris, has already been cleared.

https://x.com/ots_southport/status/1818566948327665831

Residents arrive with brushes, and water, to help. They’re told - gratefully and thankfully - that much of the work has already been done.

A number of tradesman have given their time and resources for free. A local glazing company offers free window repairs. Sefton Council’s street cleaners are out in full force.

In the space of 20 minutes, the crowd has doubled, at least. This is an industrial effort, with the community carrying out repairs, and wasting the local authority with the clear up.

That's brilliant. Well done Southport.

itsgettingweird · 31/07/2024 11:36

Southport showing true community spirit in the face of adversity. 🥰

bombastix · 31/07/2024 11:38

Good for Southport but the EDL need squashing. By legal means and quickly. There is a horrendous story of these men attempting to burn a shop which was only defused by a woman living above who said it was hers. They left her alone because she was white: she didn’t own it but she and her children could have burned alive.

They have no right to turn an ordinary town into a war zone. These people should be in prison.

Notonthestairs · 31/07/2024 11:41

I don't really have the words for that post Duncin. They should never have been put in the position where they had to clean up other people's destruction in their community. But absolutely all credit to them.

BIossomtoes · 31/07/2024 11:47

That speaks volumes about the Southport community. I’d like to see those violent thugs locked up and the key consigned to the bottom of the Mersey.

He was seen at a home game last season

Yes, which was when they banned him for life. I teach quite a few ardent fans.

Of Luton, mainly....

I lost my brother to terrorism.

To ramp up hatred on line by claiming the Southport attack was terrorist related (culminating in riots, a mosque damaged and 27 police injured) is not just reprehensible but needs addressing. Otherwise it will happen again.

Disgusted how a sitting MP deliberately enflames tensions without any justification

Farage should delete this tweet.

I agree that the news from Southport is horrendous - both the attack and the disgusting behaviour last night

A lone woman faced the rioters last night holding up a no racism here sign. She wouldn't be stopped from holding the sign up slapping away hands of people who were trying to stop her. That gives me hope

But on the other hand one of the bereaved parents posted to say stop the violence and the first reply was a far right poster correcting what she said - how dare they!

2dogsandabudgie · 31/07/2024 12:33

bombastix · 31/07/2024 09:45

He is an English nationalist and should be seen as such. And he has no power. A rabble rouser but not yet a man with power.

Suella Braverman is contemptible. I do not actually think she believes the things she says and she did have power. She simply wanted power. There was nothing special about her except her willingness to make lives of other people conditioned by her vile remarks. A generation ago Enoch Powell got sacked for his attempts at similar. She kept her job. Weak. We see the consequences now.

The Conservatives have enabled this disgusting rise; everyone should remember that.

Not just the Conservatives. This has been simmering away under the surface for years but really started taking hold under Tony Blair's New Labour. I remember the 65 year old Gillian Duffy questioning Gordon Brown about the economy and immigration and he called her a bigot. He thought his microphone was turned off but it was captured for everyone to hear.

Here we are now and nothing has changed and the left wonder why the far right is growing not just here but in Europe as well.

If this is the level we are at then it is not good enough. Good people terrorised by violent criminals. It is the role of the Government to protect all its people, and get on too with addressing living standards asap.

How dare they indeed.

How dare they jump on innocent young girls losing their lives and countless others critically injured and tell their families, friends and their community that they have no right to dislike the EDLs reaction.

How fucking dare these RW thugs pretend this is what the community wants and the country wants.

I'm soooooo fucking angry about this situation.

The stabbing was bad enough. But the lies on SM and subsequent riots - there are just no words AngryAngryAngryAngryAngryAngryAngry

Apolloneuro · 31/07/2024 13:15

I’ve just seen that Alex Yee, who was 27th after the swim has just won the gold in the men’s triathlon. Good man! There is so much good in this country.

itsgettingweird · 31/07/2024 13:23

It was an amazing finish. And the NZl guy he overtook at the end - Wilde - was an absolute star with his reaction.

Oh I missed it, live. I saw our ladies getting their bronze in the diving.

I bloody love Olympians. They epitomise hard work, endurance and perseverance. I’d take them over pampered footballers any day.

I wept on and off all day yesterday, mainly for the beautiful little girls, but the Irish swimmer getting his gold last night started me off again.

It was a lovely image seeing Wilde with his arm around Yee.

What a race!

I agree Olympians and paralympians are such nice people.

In a race your race. In a competition you compete.

But when it's done they all appreciate that they have all worked hard to get that medal or PB or seasons best. Or to come back from injury etc. outside of the actual time they are competing their is a huge camaraderie and respect.

I have some fab pictures of ds laughing and chatting with paralympians before medal ceremonies and at trials when interviewed all he could say was how standing in the podium with such greats was a huge honour (they are 8 and 9 years older then him!)

There such a respect I wish existed outside the whole did sport.

We've had a couple of visits at school, one from the GB Swim team and one from a Paralympian cyclist. Both were so inspiring and made sure their activities were inclusive to all our pupils.

Apolloneuro · 31/07/2024 14:34

The men’s BMX final has been mind blowing. They defy gravity! Silver for GB.

BIWI · 31/07/2024 14:35

I don't know how anyone can do any of that on a bike!

itsgettingweird · 31/07/2024 14:38

They spin those handle bars around in thin air with as much ease as I sip a cup of coffee - without a care on the world 😂

She was being bigoted though (as distinct from being a bigot, I don’t know her so I don’t know if it was typical). And it cost him the election. We would be a lot better off if he had been re-elected: we are where we are due to austerity and the stoking of culture wars by the ensuing Tory government. ‘The left’ - whoever that is - know exactly why people feel like this, and whose fault it is they feel that way.

Apolloneuro · 31/07/2024 15:52

Hear hear.
