On Sky news now, there are live pictures of the mosque in Southport. There is a crowd or workmen, appearances suggest of a wide variety of backgrounds repairing the damage that was done.

At a guess that is not an organised thing, but the local community taking a day off work to do what is right.

They were pulling down residents' walls to make projectiles last night.

They’ve done a good job of cleaning up lots of stadiums and the reputation of the British hooligans overseas. But those thugs need to go somewhere and the EDL provided a home for them. Or at least certainly knows how to mobilise them as an army.

Yeah but the EDL.pretty much started at Luton FC. TR not welcome there. Banned.

Is that not the kind of line we expect from the contemptible former Home Secretary Braverman? I think it is. She should have been condemned by her party, instead they were weak. Rishi Sunak is responsible for that not happening.

Frage is stirring as well with his personal message

Ofcourse he was absent from Parliament yesterday

Hideous sights in Stockport last night. I've had to remove two people from my facebook feed for sharing blatant misinformation and spouting off about 'sending them all back'. Those poor families, this time souls be about remembering those poor girls, the other injured children and the brace adults who ran into danger to protect them, instead all we hear about is the thugs who use a tragedy as an excuse for violence. It's shameful.

Do we know how many arrests were made last night? I've only seen about the injured police this morning.

I'm so angry today. Think I need a day off the Internet

Same here.

Angry but yet as if the fight has gone.

It feels so utterly hopeless because all the fat righters want is an argument. There is NO reasoning. If you respond reasonably it gives them more due to their fire. They only need a splash of petrol to create an explosion.

CassieMaddox · 31/07/2024 09:42

TheABC · 31/07/2024 09:43

I'm hoping that the Southport riots are a small minority, but the crap on social media is not helping.

The New York Times article upthread laud it out in the starkest terms: for over a decade we've had a bunch of arrogant tossers in charge who haven't a clue about what they are doing beyond the money mechanics. No plan, no vision, not the slightest curiosity about the impact on the ground. As a result, we've got a lot of rich people who have been insulated from the effects of austerity and the cost of living. Especially Government ministers. Then there's the rest of us - who see the food banks, poverty abd illness. You can't get a dentist appointment, the library has closed and your kids are taught by one overworked TA. If you have a heart attack or fall, you are dead. There's no ambulances.

Instead of fixing it, the Government deflected, with a focus on Rwanda and 'illegal immigrants' who handily look different. Then we wonder why the right-wing thugs see them as a legitimate target.

I am spitting about it today. Two kids dead and the response was to attack a mosque? WTF?

He is an English nationalist and should be seen as such. And he has no power. A rabble rouser but not yet a man with power.

Suella Braverman is contemptible. I do not actually think she believes the things she says and she did have power. She simply wanted power. There was nothing special about her except her willingness to make lives of other people conditioned by her vile remarks. A generation ago Enoch Powell got sacked for his attempts at similar. She kept her job. Weak. We see the consequences now.

The Conservatives have enabled this disgusting rise; everyone should remember that.

To an extent it makes sense for the police to quietly film the perpetrators and then pick them up in the following days and weeks.

Unless of course they choose to follow the lead of their glorious leader and run away from the country.

Sorry for shouting but please get the name of the town right.

Thanks @DuncinToffee that's been bugging me all morning. I live near Stockport and it's a very different place (in a different county) than Southport.

absquatulize · 31/07/2024 09:53

If it was, posting the wrong name, apologies, and thanks for the correction.

Autocorrect fail there I'm afraid, many apologies, I live fairly locally and type Stockport a lot and for some reason my ipad now autocorrects anything with 'port' in the name to Stockport. I can assure you it was not intentional.

Saucery · 31/07/2024 10:10

I assumed autocorrect but yes, it did grate! Grin
Apparently there are lots of thickos on X using the wrong place name too so c"mon people, let's not be like them Wink

itsgettingweird · 31/07/2024 10:13

Apologies. Having checked back I posted it wrong. Autocorrect? I've been chatting to my friend whose son trains the wrong place swim club as well.

No excuse and I will be be triple checking from now on Blush

On another note has anyone read this article? Some really interesting points in it.
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2024/04/01/what-have-fourteen-years-of-conservative-rule-done-to-britain

I ran out of superlatives for this article.

It not only reveals the scale of destruction caused by austerity.

But the absolute failure of those in government to consider what would follow as a result of their casual choices.

The sheer lack of curiosity about what happens when you cut funding - what it does to services and therefore people.

Nobody involved in those administrations should be anywhere near government again.

Required reading.

Shamefully I managed to do this. I haven't been to the Stockport area in years so it won't have been an autocorrect problem.

DuncinToffee · 31/07/2024 11:00

This is how Southport responded. A group of around 100 members of the community are repairing damage to the local mosque, seen here rebuilding a wall. St Luke’s Road, last night strewn with rubble and debris, has already been cleared.

https://x.com/ots_southport/status/1818566948327665831

Residents arrive with brushes, and water, to help. They’re told - gratefully and thankfully - that much of the work has already been done.

A number of tradesman have given their time and resources for free. A local glazing company offers free window repairs. Sefton Council’s street cleaners are out in full force.

In the space of 20 minutes, the crowd has doubled, at least. This is an industrial effort, with the community carrying out repairs, and wasting the local authority with the clear up.

That's bloody heartwarming. Having family and friends in Southport I'm not surprised.
