She was being bigoted though (as distinct from being a bigot, I don’t know her so I don’t know if it was typical). And it cost him the election. We would be a lot better off if he had been re-elected: we are where we are due to austerity and the stoking of culture wars by the ensuing Tory government. ‘The left’ - whoever that is - know exactly why people feel like this, and whose fault it is they feel that way.

I can't even be arsed to reply really. Head and brick wall spring to mind. You believe what you want to.

Has anyone else discovered the fun of a bird watch app? Recording sounds and find out what is around you, it's great fun

That does sound fun.

I’ve been meaning to ask - if the twats come on this lovely thread, do we just ignore them?

I highly rate the bird app. To the point of needing new storage on my phone

DH and DS have a botanical app thing. We have to keep stopping to take photos of mushrooms and stuff. Not lichens or trees though. Well, I say ‘we’have to keep stopping - I don’t, I just carry on. Between them and the dog having a sniff-fest it’s a wonder my heart rate ever gets above 65 on a walk….

Absolutely.

@Saucery what's the botanical app. I've got a bird one and I've already downloaded the Belize pack ready for next May🤦‍♀️

iNaturalist. It’s not limited to iPhones though. Google Lens was their gateway drug, then it all led to this……. I call it Pokémon Plants Grin

I believe the far right is rising due to populist politicians in the right of centre parties fanning the flames on top of people feeling powerless because of the rise in cost of living recently and the decline of the country under austerity over the last decade and a half. I think immigration has been pushed as a wedge issue and processing of asylum seekers has been deliberately halted (almost to a stop) by the Tory administration in order to raise this as a scapegoat.
I think to solve it we need massive investment in left behind communities and in education and the NHS, and we need politicians to talk about the real issues - and, yes, that includes immigration, making it sustainable, how to cope with the coming climate related increase in displaced people etc - and not to scapegoat any group.
What about you?

BestIsWest · 31/07/2024 17:13

Merlin is the bird app I believe.
The IPhone can recognise breeds of dogs and cats and famous paintings as well as plants.

Crikeyalmighty · 31/07/2024 17:15

@cardibach indeed- I thought he was quite restrained. And as for the growth of the far right-there are many reasons-people want simplistic solutions when there often aren't any- the growth of technology has meant far fewer well paid jobs in industry for those not capable of better paying roles , far more immigrants from non EU due to war etc but in some country's due to conscious policy from hugely declining birth rates and here in the UK from Brexit meaning worker shortages in certain sectors that others don't want to work in. This causes extra pressures on housing, health etc because we have been allowing whole families rather than single mainly younger people from EU who often stayed for shorter periods of a few years. People throughout the developed western world have naturally become resentful due to declining standards ( not just UK) due to cost and immigration is an easy thing to blame it on- in some cases it's a factor , in other places less so.

Not just the Conservatives. This has been simmering away under the surface for years but really started taking hold under Tony Blair's New Labour. I remember the 65 year old Gillian Duffy questioning Gordon Brown about the economy and immigration and he called her a bigot. He thought his microphone was turned off but it was captured for everyone to hear.

Here we are now and nothing has changed and the left wonder why the far right is growing not just here but in Europe as well.

🙈

Yep.
Many of our problems stemming from the prolonged period of austerity and destruction of public services are now being utilised by the same people that applauded those same policies.

For example - Why get rid of 20k experienced police officers only then to desperately need to recruit the same numbers of new less experienced ones? Why lengthen prison sentences without expanding prison places? Why leave mental health services (particularly child mental health) adrift and then complain about our young people? Why cut FE funding? (This includes sixth form colleges). I could go on.
What about you?

bombastix · 31/07/2024 17:23

There are no constructive ideas, just a tear down on those who have faces that do not fit. And frankly that is the idea

RafaistheKingofClay · 31/07/2024 17:25

Anyone recommend a bird app for distraction?

No, but I can recommend the board game Wingspan for hours lost literally getting your ducks in a row and trying to find the tiny little eggs that may have rolled under the sofa.
There’s now a Dragon version, which is more my cup of tea!

I’ve been meaning to ask - if the twats come on this lovely thread, do we just ignore them?

You just have to remember that for some trolls posters, everything is Labours fault, even issues they show no understanding of because they've never been in Britain. Some posters are just easily led down the far right path because of soundbites. They have a distinct lack of critical thinking skills.
Some are just here to be contrary.
I think it depends on the type of visitor.

@DuncinToffee Dd and I watched one of the club members compete in the commonwealth, it was something special being able to cheer on one of your own at such a high level. Incredibly inspirational and I don't compete. Dd certainly gained from the experience. Sadly, injury kept them out of the Olympics, sport can be brutal.
