Black woman shot dead in her house in USA

I opened bbc news this morning to see this headline, along with a video, bodycam from the officers, of what happened. I was so shocked. She’d called the police as she feared an intruder and they went into her house so she could get her ID. One of them
mentioned the pot of water boiling on the stove and said he didn’t want a fire. So she removed it, and as she was talking to him he literally shot her. Multiple times. And killed her. I couldn’t believe what I was watching. I’ve checked mumsnet for another thread and can’t find anything and I just went back on bbc news to post the link and it’s disappeared.

Haven’t seen it.

Could he have feared she was going to throw the water over him?

(that doesn’t justify multiple shots, obviously).

SofaTroubles · 23/07/2024 11:49

i think that’s his defense. But she was a small lady, there was distance and a kitchen counter between them. He’s been charged with murder.

Seems unreal that this happens over and over.

betterangels · 23/07/2024 11:52

It's actually insane. It's also insane that I was shocked but not really surprised. Maybe he'll be fired. He'll find some excuse as to why he feared for his life and had to shoot several times. Likely he'll avoid charges. I hope he doesn't, but it's not unlikely.

Oh, never mind. Good. At least there were charges this time then.

Justcallmebebes · 23/07/2024 11:54

And to make matters even worse, if possible, he stood by and refused to administer any sort of aid once he'd shot her.

Absolutely horrendous

MeAgainAndAgain · 23/07/2024 11:55

He looks fine with her before that and the mood is fine. She goes to take the water off the stove and there’s some dialogue I can’t make out and the atmosphere changes very suddenly.

Is it a gas cooker? I can’t work out why she moves it instead of turning the gas or electric off.

wlv12 · 23/07/2024 11:56

How shocking - that poor woman contacted the police because she feared an intruder but the people to fear were the people that came to ‘help’ her?!

CormorantStrikesBack · 23/07/2024 11:56

Just watched the video. Jesus. I do admit she was acting a bit odd with the “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus “ stuff while holding a put of boiling water. But he didn’t give her a decent her chance to put it down, she was apologising so seemed to me like she had started to put it down. Plus even if he was in real fear he could have backed away, the door was behind him, he could have left the house.

CormorantStrikesBack · 23/07/2024 11:57

And both officers took their guns out, seems as natural as breathing to them.

Spikylittleflower · 23/07/2024 11:58

Even if she had threatened him with boiling water, given the circumstances and layout and positions of all involved his actions were totally disproportionate

Apologies, but we don't think this is a suitable link

"think that’s his defense. But she was a small lady, there was distance and a kitchen counter between them. He’s been charged with murder."

It is murder, in my view. She's right over at the other side of the kitchen, with the kitchen island halfway between them. She'd have had to be an Olympic shot putter to get it anywhere near him and nothing in her demeanour, tone or body language/positioning suggests that she is going to go any such thing. He's being a patronising dismissive arse leading up to it and at most, she is faintly eye-rolly at his wankerdom but she shows zero agression, doesn't make any sudden movements and goes to put the pot down as requested when the video cuts off just before he fires. (Well, not as requested, he screamed at her to drop it but she is hardly going to drop a pot of boiling water over herself, she goes to set it down more carefully).

SofaTroubles · 23/07/2024 12:02

Absolutely is murder. He makes me sick. And he prevented his partner from getting a first aid kit by saying he’d shot her in the head and so nothing he could do about it. Makes me cold to my core.

“From what I understand, the officer who shot, turned off his body cam when the encounter began. The body cam footage is going to be from the second responding officer who apparently caught some damning muttering of the first officer.”

This is from Reddit.

Orangevlue · 23/07/2024 12:03

That is so so awful, sickening. What a horrible horrible man. He didn’t give her a chance, he could have walked out the room. She looked like she was putting it down anyway. I hope he gets charged and a long sentence.

cupcaske123 · 23/07/2024 12:04

The woman seemed disoriented but at no point was she a danger. He told her to remove the water from the stove and then shot her. I'm not surprised. I'm sure there was a case in the States where a black woman was shot in her bed by police. It seems as though being black in the US is a threat.

hastingsmax · 23/07/2024 12:04

What was she apologising for if she wasn't about to do something?

hastingsmax · 23/07/2024 12:05

Why are the body cams obscured when the shooting occurs?

She said I rebuke you in the name of Jesus which he took to be a threat and so she apologized.

SofaTroubles · 23/07/2024 12:07

I think they’ve been blacked out for us

the police in America are not the most intelligent of creatures. Thugs with guns basically. They are frightening.

You can see full videos on Reddit or YouTube. They’re still not clear though, arms in the way etc.
