Black woman shot dead in her house in USA

I opened bbc news this morning to see this headline, along with a video, bodycam from the officers, of what happened. I was so shocked. She’d called the police as she feared an intruder and they went into her house so she could get her ID. One of them
mentioned the pot of water boiling on the stove and said he didn’t want a fire. So she removed it, and as she was talking to him he literally shot her. Multiple times. And killed her. I couldn’t believe what I was watching. I’ve checked mumsnet for another thread and can’t find anything and I just went back on bbc news to post the link and it’s disappeared.

It’s horrendous. That poor woman was clearly no threat to either of them. I’m glad the officer has been charged with murder.

AutismHelp1980 · 23/07/2024 14:41

Omg this is horrific what was the danger to the officers?

BitOutOfPractice · 23/07/2024 14:48

That is absolutely horrific. Cold blooded murder.

RIP Sonya Massey

Why on earth does American society continue to tolerate this? The almost indiscriminate use of guns by the police and others? I just cannot for the life of me fathom why this is such a Thing in America.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/07/2024 14:53

I've just read to the end of the report and I'm crying at my desk.

The police didn't even tell her family that it was a police officer that killed her, they had to read it on the internet. They'd assumed it was an intruder. The disrespect to the family is staggering.

He not only refused to give medical treatment, he said ""All right, I'm not even gonna waste my med stuff then".

What was she apologising for if she wasn't about to do something?

If you’re black and live in America you know you need to apologise to a police officer or you might be shot. Apologies don’t always work as it didn’t for this poor woman. She posed no threat to that police officer. He’s an utter bastard and I hope he never gets out of jail.

AutismHelp1980 · 23/07/2024 15:03

I actually hope he gets the death sentence for killing some one in cold blood.

SwankyPants · 23/07/2024 15:03

It also shocked me that they weren't in any hurry to check her out. The partner of the shooter held her head to stem the bleeding , said she was 'still gasping' I know agonal breathing isn't a good sign but there was no one checking her :(

This awful 😢 I haven’t read all the details yet beyond the initial DM article I read as I can’t face it (yet)

"If you’re black and live in America you know you need to apologise to a police officer or you might be shot."

The bit in the porch where he gets angry at her being insufficently polite and submissive and she has to de-escalate him by meekly saying "No, sir" was like a scene from one of those Twelve Years A Slave type films. That alone had my mouth open. No bloody wonder Black Lives Matter was/is such a thing.
And that is what he would do in the presence of another officer with the other guy's bodycam video and audio on. What would he do behind closed doors?

Gettingbysomehow · 23/07/2024 15:16

FF's if one of my mentally ill patients comes at me with boiling water I just retreat I don't shoot them in the face WT actual F.
She sounded confused and a bit weird but that is no excuse to shoot her. What the hell is going on in the US?

Imagine how many of these incidents occurred before body cams and how it was denied, excused or brushed under the carpet back then?

Before bodycams it would’ve been “she said it was acid in there and she was going to burn my face off” or “she lunged at me carrying an object I thought was a knife” or something dramatic like that.

I was recently watching a true crime story about how a very old (black) woman shot an ex lover in the recreation room of a nursing home where they both lived. She was still holding onto the gun.

a (white) police officer came and diffused the situation and arrested her without killing her. What she did was awful of course but I was thinking I wish all police officers were like the one involved in that case. I think part of police training should include lots of case studies of situations like that which have been resolved without any/ further bloodshed .

some of them seem to have normalised killing at the slightest threat - and getting away with it.

Thudercatsrule · 23/07/2024 15:30

Just horrific and heartbreaking. Even if he felt the need to shoot, why didnt he shoot to disarm, rather than kill. But even if she threw the water, he had time to step back and avoid it.

This.

They were between her and the front door with the kitchen counter and quite a bit of distance between her and them. They could have fled the building if they were worried that she was going to throw boiling water over them. They would have outrun her easily if she was trying to carry the pot to follow them.

you forget that in the US almost anyone can own a gun and in many states conceal carry (i.e. hiding a gun under clothes).
no wonder police are quick with their own weapon.

still an awful, awful case and good that the officer's are in court for this.

Truly horrific. That poor woman and her poor family. I cannot imagine the response of the police in the UK being anything like that.

I cannot get my head round this to unpick it and work out what might stop these murders.

Hi Nigel.

Are0 you aware of the death of Dalian Atkinson?

The stats on men with schizophrenia, especially poc, at the hands of UK police don't give us anything to be reassured about.

OrlandointheWilderness · 23/07/2024 15:45

That is murder. Absolutely completely without justification - even her saying I rebuke you in the name of Jesus had no aggression or malice to it, there was nothing in her behaviour or actions that suggested she was even a vague threat. Let alone one you needed to kill. Seriously, what do they think we do in the UK without easy access to firearms!

DancingLions · 23/07/2024 15:45

I saw this earlier and was absolutely horrified by it.
There is no excuse. When she went to duck and said sorry my heart broke for her. Murdered in cold blood. I hope he gets the maximum penalty for what he did.

ConnieCounter · 23/07/2024 15:50

This is murder. There's no excuse for this. The murderer is clearly a thug and a bully. I'm genuinely in shock after watching the video. It's unbelievable. That poor woman. May she rest in peace. I hope he spends the rest of his days in prison.

GloriousGoosebumps · 23/07/2024 15:50

The American news stations are reporting that he had worked for 6 Police departments since 2020 and either been sacked or asked to move on. He was quite a walking red flag. Residents are trying to get a law passed prohibiting Police departments from employing someone who has been sacked by another Police department,

TakeMe2Insanity · 23/07/2024 15:52

What the heck? How is that allowed? Did each new department know of his history?

How is that allowed to happen?
If a police officer was sacked in the UK they wouldn't just be able to join a neighboring force .
