So why do people like trump??

I can clearly see why people don't like trump but why on earth do people actually like him?

Can't even work it out?

OP posts:
SnowFrogJelly · 22/07/2024 00:56

They like wearing mini pillows on their ears

Simonjt · 22/07/2024 01:00

They like him probably think they don’t require consent from women, sadly a lot of people do think like that, how anyone can support a man who proudly brags about sexually assaulting women is beyond me.

momtoboys · 22/07/2024 01:02

Because they are imbeciles.

adultingforever · 22/07/2024 01:10

I'll bite. I am in the US, Midwest actually. I took a long road trip recently out to the West Coast, and along the way I was stunned to find that the only news outlets I could get on my car radio or on TV in motels was really right-wing Trump-supporting outlets. Once in a while I would drive through a town with a state university that would have their own radio station and they would have National Public Radio news (which is more center-left to far-left), but other than that it would be Steve Bannon types, Charlie Kirk, etc. So I think lots of rural people just do not have any other sources of information, and they support Trump.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 21/07/2024 22:19

And this is exactly what entrenches people in their view point.

I think this argument is just used as a way of trying to shut down criticism of voters that support populist candidates. It makes no sense - you're basically saying you made us stupid by calling us stupid. Not even the stupidest voters are as stupid as that.

Unfortunately, even if everyone stopped calling them stupid, the Trumpers would carry on Trumping. It is almost like a cult for many of them. I agree that it's hard to understand why, but I think it's because he offers very simple (many would say simplistic) solutions to complex problems, and those solutions appeal to people that don't necessarily have the critical thinking skills to analyse whether or not they would work. Plus of course, he is extremely good at exploiting people's prejudices and he uses this to manipulate people to great effect.

It's pretty scary to see the level of adulation that he has. Any democracy surely needs a healthy dose of scepticism, and not that weird kind of pseudo-religious following for any candidate.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 22/07/2024 01:14

There's a lot of people out there who still hate women, immigrants, people on welfare etc, and until Trump came along it was becoming increasingly uncool to say so in public. He's made those people feel listened to and legitimised their fear and hatred.

Grendell · 22/07/2024 01:19

I'm in the states and know Trump supporters - mostly it seems they want someone to shake the snow globe - hard.

They admire him because he gives zero fucks, even if it is due to narcissistic behavior.

They are idiots though. No need to paint them as such. They just are!

Yeah this is what she was talking about. I think Trump is nuts but writing off a huge chunk of the population as a “basket of deplorables” doesn’t help

He overturned NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) which moved American jobs to Mexico as it was cheaper to produce goods there. In doing so he brought manufacturing jobs back to the US. He insisted that all NATO nations pay their required 2% GDP contributions. When France decided to raise taxes on US companies in France he told Macron he was going to put a 100% tariff on imported French wines and Champagne. They immediately backed down. General stuff like this

and @MrsRobinsonsHandprints

Who but an idiot would vote for aa rapist as President?
Who but an idiot would vote for a bigoted disabilist as President?
Who but an idiot would vote for someone who boasted they had overturned Roe v Wade and set back women's rights by 50 years for President?
Who but an idiot would vote for a friend of Epstein for President?
Who but an idiot would vote for someone with so many failed businesses for President?
Who but an idiot would vote for someone who thinks its OK to and to boast about grabbing a woman by the pussy for President?

There we go. Only an idiot would like a man who is all those things.

You're having a laugh. He's a strong advocate of law breaking

He is a strong advocate of Donald Trump, full stop.

CuriousGeorge80 · 22/07/2024 01:46

I hate, detest Trump. But it’s unhelpful to just say they are all idiots. It stops a proper analysis of why millions upon millions of people will vote for him. They aren’t all stupid and it’s unhelpful to suggest they are. I don’t pretend to fully understand American politics but there are already some really interesting posts in this discussion explaining reasons why people vote for trump.

It’s similar to the brexit discussion. It’s unhelpful to just say anybody who voted for Brexit is stupid or racist. That’s just not true. I voted remain and was devastated by the result, but I’m also from a part of the north that has seen significant economic decline since I was a child - loss of jobs, no investment, high streets ruined etc. It’s not hard to see how people living there were seduced by the promises made, by the passion of the people leading the remain campaign.

Dismissing all of these people as stupid means we don’t examine the actual issues that lead to the rise of people like Trump, Farage and Le Pen. So we don’t address them and the divide and misery grows and their cut of the vote increases.

Exactly. Elon Musk is donating $45 million a month to the Trump Campaign and he is far, far from stupid

AlpiniPraline · 22/07/2024 01:57

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 21/07/2024 22:14

Because of the moral superiority of those that dislike him.

This righteousness of the left is nauseating, the desire to paint Trump supporters as idiots fuels the desire to vote for him.

Maybe look at the reasons why people are so unhappy that they are willing to vote for Trump rather than post with the false incomprehension.

I'm politically homeless (and not American so it wouldn't matter) so no Trump supporters but these endless posts are like the Brexit posts from Remainers (of which I am one, I just don't agree with the arrogance that went with it?

I don't believe you voted Remain.

MrsCatE · 22/07/2024 02:52

I blame it all on the first Hollywood writers' strike. TV studios had to come up with fillers instead of series like 'Friends' and came up with 'Reality' TV - cheap and crap TV. People lapped up 'Real Housewives' etc and some of the US Public fell in love with Trump as the Apprentice boss and his fake persona as self made Business Billionaire (had lost more money than inherited at the time). I am as confused as any other normal person would be as why a self confessed (leers at own daughter) Pussy Grabber, Tax Avoider rapist would be a credible contender, again.

MessinaBloom · 22/07/2024 04:42

Elon Musk may be not be stupid, but seems to very far from wise.

MiGatoEsBonitoTuGatoEsFeo · 22/07/2024 05:04

"I don't believe you voted Remain."

Why don't you believe she voted remain @AlpiniPraline wtf? Can't you can't fathom the idea that you might agree with someone on one issue and disagree on another 😱?
Or are you unable to comprehend the idea that someone might vote remain and not be hateful and abusive to people who vote differently to them?

Fwiw we're out there. Unlike the loud mouthed minority who were calling brexiters "thick" "racist" "bigoted" etc we're able to respect the votes of others and were sickened by that behaviour.

Imagine having the fucking entitlement to confidently say what you said 😆

FrippEnos · 22/07/2024 05:19

Its what happens when you call people thick, stupid and racist etc.
for having a different political view to yourself without being open to their points and problems.

Haven't they got channels on their tv? Radio?Access to books, magazines, podcasts, the BBC?. You make it sound like the 1930s.

CarmelaBrunella · 22/07/2024 05:42

@MiGatoEsBonitoTuGatoEsFeo excellent points, and it's just been dreadful on here about Brexit.

hattie43 · 22/07/2024 05:55

I think people like his patriotism, putting America first , make America great again etc etc a bit like Farage. Getting people to think all their problems would evaporate if only borders were controlled .

I also agree for some anything is better than the sanctimonious left

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 22/07/2024 06:26

Because of the moral superiority of those that dislike him.

This righteousness of the left is nauseating, the desire to paint Trump supporters as idiots fuels the desire to vote for him.

Well that is an idiotic reason to vote for someone.

Chinotto · 22/07/2024 06:39

The same reason people like Jeremy Corbyn, or Nigel Farage, or any other populist authoritarian. It’s terrifying but mocking their followers only deepens the divisions.

dottiehens · 22/07/2024 07:23

I hate the sanctimonious left. The Democrats are hypocrites and Trump call them out each time. Not sure I like Trump that much but I would vote against the Democrats. I do not want the dreadful squad getting stronger or the US to become like California. As for Europe you really think people would vote thinking of you before their own interests. That is laughable.

CarmelaBrunella · 22/07/2024 07:26

Trump is only 3 years younger than Biden. It's incredible, considering the difference. I wonder if Trump's energy and confidence are factors as well?
