She has eaten him.

My rather splendid female spider has today eaten her mate.

I am a little sad, they have been sharing a web for the last couple of weeks, I was beginning to think they had a Understanding . But alas, today Mr spider is no more.

For reference they are not pets, rather squatters that inhabit my ceiling.

He probably didn’t do his share of the web, and instead of LTB, she ATB.

😂😂

If you think that’s a beast, wait until you see his big brother who we found sitting like a jaunty fascinator on the head of my son’s Doggy. Doggy is about 10 inches tall, to give you an idea of scale.

Doggy: "RUN! IT'S TOO LATE FOR ME BUT YOU CAN STILL SAVE YOURSELVES!!"

😂😂😂. We had to put Doggy in therapy for a while afterwards.

@Loubri I’m afraid I live in the south of England! It’s a newish house but we do get a lot of bruisers like these two in late summer/autumn.

If only we could all eat our husbands when they got on our nerves.

UGH! 😂

Love this thread! Thought I'd share my favourite spider video since there are so many arachnophiles here. Watch until the end 😁

Rockhopper81 · 20/07/2024 22:21

@OccultGnuNew

If the male spider leaves his penis inside the female spider, I'm not sure it's technically a cocklodger, more of a 'cock lodged'...

Rockhopper81 · 20/07/2024 22:24

Also, we have lots of cellar spiders. Lots of them. I saw two having a row the other day - one just appeared from behind the radiator to pick a fight with the other one on the skirting board. Absolutely no need!

Then I noticed a third one in the corner, who seemed torn between wanting to get involved and stay in said corner...it looked old to me (don't ask me to justify that observation, it just did!), and knowing cellar spiders eat each other, I suspect it was just staying in its lane to avoid being elevenses for the victor of the radiator-skirting board battle...

Maybe all the MRAs and incels in here have a point, since he did satisfy her and it still wasn't enough. Makes them look a bit silly for whinging about paying for dinner, though.

Rottweilermummy · 20/07/2024 23:42

Brilliant post OP , I love spiders, and often talk to them lol Poor Mr spider 😢🕷
And yes men do get a good deal really with just Ltb, Mine at least would be quite sweet as he likes a lot of sugar

Thought I'd share a pic from some years ago, little spiderlings being guarded by Mum, never happened again (I was hoping for a yearly repeat)

She has eaten him.
Pudmyboy · 21/07/2024 00:28

And one from the garden, again, never repeated. Hard to see the spiderlings in their silk net behind Mum, but some days they spread out and other (colder?) days they bunched together, still in their silk net. Would have liked a return visit but never saw anything like this since

She has eaten him.

Anyone else now feeling the guilt at ‘getting rid’ of spiders taking refuge in the house? Might be a male spider that’s run away from its mate 😬

Also voting for this to be moved to classics @mnhq

Lived in an old barn conversion for a few years,, I had to get rid of a few with vacuum cleaner there was ao many and they were just taking liberties,, making webs wherever they wanted, I did apologise to everyone that has had to meet their fate it' was only the spindly type mind you I'm all for spiders but not walking into their webs, if they could have just kept to cupboards or behind radiators, still feel guilty though
I've saved way more spiders over the years than I removed, even shared a bedroom with a massive one sitting right above my bed, and in a house full of men/ boys I was the one to remove the spiders outside, even shared my car with spiders lol

No, or we'd be overrun with flies. Spiders do a wonderful job.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 21/07/2024 09:32

Anyone for a bit of spider tickling?

"If you hunt around crumbly old walls you can sometimes spot small gaps and holes with strands of spider silk radiating out from them. Occasionally you'll see the legs of a spider just resting near the entrance to the hole. You know there's a spider at home, but how do you find out what type?
The answer is to tickle it out. Or more precisely to pretend to be the spiders lunch." 😃

My house spider,Boris, follows me from room to room sometimes. But he is always sitting on top of my headboard when I go to bed at night. He humps it for a while then settles down to sleep. Love my Boris. He’s single, but I think he would like to meet another spider and settle down with a family 🕷️🕷️🕷️

NoSquirrels · 21/07/2024 09:54

This is an excellent thread. I’ve reported it to MN in hopes they see the Classics nominations.

Despite not being the biggest spider fan, I do also name them and once saw baby spiders hatch on the outside of one of our bedroom windows - it was extremely cool (but I was happy we were separated by glass!)

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/07/2024 10:01

How many baby spids are born usually

Looks tons here

lcakethereforeIam · 21/07/2024 10:03

Never used to have cellar spiders in our house until we stayed in a cottage in Wales that was crawling with them, including lots of tiny babies. Some much have come home with us. I think they got to Australia by hitchhiking, so mid Wales to NW England is a doddle.

I believe they've got a reputation in Oz of being terribly venomous because they'll take on and ETB any of the dangerous native spiders. In reality their venom isn't dangerous to humans.
