How many people do you know that have been to prison?

Only counting people you know quite well (say well enough to chat with so friends, family members or close colleagues sort of level) not passing acquaintances or friends of friends

None that I know as friends/family etc. Sadly, a few children I taught not that long ago seem to be making their way through the criminal justice system. And they're not the ones I suspected might in many cases either.

None

I didn’t know debtors prison was still a thing, even in recent history Shock

I was going to ask about this lol. It's something I thought only existed in Victorian times.

Onelifeonly · 16/07/2024 22:05

One, ex colleague (fraud).

Ex pupils or pupil's parents - quite a few.

CaravaggiosCat · 16/07/2024 22:06

And 3

It definitely does, if I was to count the amount of people I know in passing from my neighbourhood that I know have been to prison I’d be here all day and 4 out of the 6 I mentioned grew up in this neighbourhood.

I suspect that is mostly true however from my personal experience it wasn't the case. I grew up and lived in not so great areas until a few years ago and I don't know anybody who has been to prison or even been convicted of a crime really. However, I have and I'm the "person you would least expect" to go to prison or anything remotely like that.

GameOfJones · 16/07/2024 22:06

Zero.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 16/07/2024 22:06

None. Lots of people in my extended family have worked for the police or with patients in the NHS, and I've worked in education for years so I don't tend to have any friends or family who are not squeaky clean criminal record-speaking, IYSWIM. For DH's job it would be a complete no-no.

One, but jail rather than prison.

NannyGythaOgg · 16/07/2024 22:09

Only one, she spent one night in prison on 3 separate occasions.

Back in the 1980s, BBC license was, pretty well, compulsory if you had a tv. She would not buy a license. 3 times over 3 years she chose to spend the night in the nick, with a book to read, on 3 separate occasions when she was caught.

somepeopleareunbelievable · 16/07/2024 22:11

I think lots of people will know none (and if they do it'll be a white collar crime like fraud) and some people will know lots, because they know lots of criminals. I know none, but my older brother knows lots - he used to hang out with a very different gang to me and some of them went to prison.

Thedayb4youcame · 16/07/2024 22:13

Three. I have known all of them for years and years, but in two cases hardly ever see them. Indeed, one person I hadn't seen for over thirty-three years at least and I have no idea if they know I know what I know. I only see them now because our paths have crossed temporarily.

However, when I see that person, it's no different from being in front of anyone who I know something about that I wish I'd never been told - I just have to try not to think of it. And in all three cases I know so little of the backstory.

Then again, these are people I know who I know have been to prison. Your question is How many people do you know that have been to prison?...for all I know I may know a great many - I just don't know whether they've been in prison or not.

ChangeEmailAddress · 16/07/2024 22:13

2 of the 15 children in the lovely tiny rural village that I grew up in. Less than 100 people on the electoral role, so the crime stats must be impressive!!

😳 I can't even say she deserved to go to prison, fair play to her

Yeah, she didn’t get as long as everyone thought.
she said she wanted to admit to her actions as he never admitted his.

Everyone is 'squeaky clean' until they're not. You are very naive if you think that no-one that you know will ever be imprisoned.

That is some amazing courage 😊 glad she didn't get a hugely long sentence

One

Fifteentreefrogs · 16/07/2024 22:20

Three.
And one was an ex.. one was a close friend.. one a friend I hang out with regularly in a group but not super close with...
The ex and the close friend I eventually cut all contact with. The ex was violent and the friend just kept doing the same unhinged stuff over and over. Both had drinking problems.
The friend I hang out with in a group is actually a really decent guy who totally turned his life around though. Just had a baby with his partner and they are the most lovely people.

Two of them were jailed for a short time many years ago for stupid stuff when they were young. It was very much a phase they both soon grew out of.

The 3rd one is currently serving life for murder. Without wanting to give any details of the case all I can say is that it was just about the most horrific crime imaginable carried out by literally the most unlikely person I know.

Think of your calmest, easy going most pleasant friend you have and then imagine being told that they have committed the most awful murder in shocking circumstances. Thats pretty much what happened. It still feels surreal and probably always will do.

I can kind of understand that, the one violent criminal I mentioned is a close family friend and an adopted uncle figure to me.
It’s very strange as adult, I know if I met him for the first time now, knowing about the crimes he committed I’d be terrified but I still can’t properly connect the doting uncle figure and frail old man I know with the image of someone who could commit those crimes.

Four that are still alive. Three that have passed away.

tunainatin · 16/07/2024 22:25

One, colleague and lovely person. Foolish youth!

gmgnts · 16/07/2024 22:25

Two, plus one who is probably going to be sent down - all for financial fraud. Professionally I met dozens of men who had been imprisoned.

Geiyotue · 16/07/2024 22:26

A few I think, but my church works closely with a charity which rehabilitates ex offenders so I have more contact than most. One is now a government advisor.
